Urban Meyer's Mattison comments.
I was watching ESPU's coverage of signing day a little while ago while home for lunch, and they did a short segment on what's going on with Michigan recruiting. The last part had the panel talking about UM, and Urban Meyer raved about the Mattison hire. Meyer said that in his opinion Michigan not only signed one of the best defensive minds in the country, but quote "the best recruiter in the country". Yes, Urban Meyer said Greg Mattison is the best recruiter on the country. He said that Mattison's recruiting style is parralleled by noone. Obviously everyone feels great about the hire, but hearing it again from someone of Meyer's caliber (hate him or live him) is pretty nice to hear. Hearing things like this is what make us all excited to see what Hoke and Co. can do next year with a full year of recruiting.

Mattison, though, will turn it into a positive. The players will see him rehabbing it in the weight room. The defense will be screaming "Win one for the Gimper" before spring practice ends.

Lessons for Greg Mattison, 2/2/2011:
recruiting style may be unparalleled, but falling style can be improved.

Barwis left some of his urine in the training room freezer to rub over just such an injury.

During the World Cup, I remember hearing about a player that would rub horse placenta over his knee that he was trying to rehab. I can't imagine that was a good smelling locker room after that.
Also, who the hell do you buy horse placenta from?

At least it wasn't the quad in his arm.

in his leg or with his leg?
great mattison is such a beast...
that when he slips on the ice and tears a quad, they need to call in the grounds crew to repair the sidewalk.

That's nice to hear. It would also be nice to hear Urban honestly discuss the SEC's recruiting policies. Specifically the oversigning to create an atmosphere of playing for your scholarship every year. Basically, SEC kids are one injury away from loss of scholorship.
(Not nice to hear about Maddison's injury, this weather is bad for that)

Florida is one school in the SEC who doesn't blatantly oversign. It would be hard for him to speak about it and come off not sounding biased or a homer.

Thanks for posting this. It was interesting to hear Meyer's take on recruiting today. I'm not sure if anyone else caught Meyer's praise of Bob Diaco's recruiting of Ishaq Williams, but it was quite interesting to hear. Apparently Williams had a flight scheduled for a visit to Penn State and Diaco camped outside of Williams' house and intercepted him on the way to the airport at 4:30 am. Williams never made the trip to Penn State gave his verbal to Notre Dame. Meyer LOVED this story and went on and on about how that was great to see such hard working recruiting that was within the rules. If this is what's within the rules, and Meyer loved this, and Meyer loves Mattison's recruiting to the extent that he would call him the best recruiting in the country (which surely implies that he's better than Diaco, who he just praised incessantly), I cannot wait to hear stories about Mattison's recruiting visits next year! Should make for some entertaining reading!

......can be a victim of our crazy winters. Still, it's great praise from Urban Meyer and I absolutely agree that it is an awesome hire. The only criticism is this - obviously, Mattison should keep a supply of sand or rock salt in the car. You never know around here at this time of year.

Or he needs to get shoes with the same stuff snow tires are made out of. Failing that, just get a pair of crampons:

As an aside, I'm not a huge fan of Urban Meyer, but it's great that he seems to have a lot of respect for Michigan. When he was at Utah, he had an clause in his contract that waived his buyout if he left to take the Michigan job. He's hired a few assistants at Florida that either played or coached at Michigan including Mattison, Scott Loeffler (whom he hired as QB coach after Rich Rod fired him from the same position when he took over), and Chuck Heater. He compared Steve Spurrier's legacy at Florida to that of Bo at Michigan (a comparison that likely drew blank stares in SEC country).
Good to know that some of the best in the business still view Michigan as an elite program.
