Yep, all of this is in the depth chart (under Useful Stuff).

Zero reason to have this be a daily thread when nothing significant has changed. All due respect to the latest transfer, but if we get in a situation where 4th string QB matters, things are already FUBAR’d at an Indiana 2021 level.

Daily might be overkill, but this is most definitely not under the depth chart under useful stuff - that is way out of date.   During this likely period of significant turnover, I would welcome this as an occasional thread.

It is very easy not to read threads you don’t like.    It is much harder to read threads providing helpful updated information if people don’t write them because they get so much grief when they do.

If people don't like a post, they don't have to read it, and I don't think that they need to be dicks when they post or just say unhelpful/not-constructive things like "I dont like this"

However

This is a message board, built for constructive discussion, and it features a voting system (meaning disagreement is welcome and is vital as a mechanism to make sure the board has good content) If people dont like a post or feel like something could be changed (like the regularity of a scholarship update), if they are just voicing their opinion or giving constructive help, that helps the board regulate itself and not just be an echo chamber.

We do not need this every day of the offseason. They will figure it out. I am sure there are a lot of kids that have already told the coaches their decision months ago, but are just waiting to have everything finalized.

This is a valid point.  What else do we have to talk about?   We've been spoiled with the bball team almost every year going back to 2011, and with the MSU game coming up this weekend, that *should* be the talk of the board.  Now, I think most are apathetic toward the team.  Sure I'll watch and hope they, especially the freshmen, start to show progress but at this point, I have 0 expectations that this is a tourney team.  Heck, they may not even be an NIT team.

If I understand correctly M is technically at 86 Scholarships right now until the non-EEs arrive in the summer. which gives time for others to sort things out post Spring practice depth charts.

Side note:  Anyone else see that MSU appears to be pulling a Sarkesian/Texas/Worthy move on a 4-star WR who signed with Washington in the early period?  They sure have come a LONG way in terms of roster management from the holier-than-thou Dantonio years.

Tucker isn't messing around.  He's willing to cut some corners that MSU hasn't been willing to do in the past.  He essentially is stealing a Darrius Clemons recruit post-signing day.

Anyone that thinks MSU is going away anytime soon needs a reality check.  Michigan is going to need to recruit well AND figure out how to get a couple transfers in ever year as well.  Michigan is still the stronger program, but MSU is catching up for where they were a couple years ago.

I agree with you about Tucker and the "new" MSU...I just find it fascinating to see the same fanbase that had 100+ page threads meticulously documenting all the players that were "Hoke'd" or "Harbaughed"** on tRCMB now rationalizing the same actions by Tucker.

**There was probably a few dozen pages alone on the "awful" treatment of Eric Swenson by M/Harbaugh from the same folks that are now claiming "just sour grapes" on the trainer/coach who blasted them for dropping his kid a day or two before early NSD...

I'm pretty sure Brian did a whole series of articles pre-Harbaugh about Alabama and how many kids they were processing/medical-ing and how we wouldn't do such a thing. Now it's part of our roster management.

Most people don't have the capacity to rationally think about how things are good or bad for everyone. They only understand whether things negatively or positively affect them and theirs.

Tucker may not turn out to be a good coach, but it won't be because he's not doing everything he can to succeed.

Pretty sure Brian's reference to 'Bama was primarily about medical redshirts as 'Bama had like 3 to 5 PER YEAR iirc. M seems to have done more medical DQs under Hoke and Harbaugh (though I might not have been paying attention before Brian's article) but not nearly to the extent of 'Bama -- maybe 1 every other year? --to the point that it is debatable if this is truly a roster management tactic.

Now that you mention it, Brian and crew DID have a lot of misgivings about the evolution of roster management in the game today, but I think this actually started during the Hoke years..

To get back to my original theme - I was less judging what MSU is doing/did than marveling at how - and how quickly - the MSU fanbase has completely changed stances on the topic.

If you're referring to Bernard, as reported here, he's  already been released from his NIL at Washington

https://news.yahoo.com/could-former-uw-4-star-162613209.html?fr=sycsrp_catchall

Being a UM fan, I'm obviously not a fan of Tucker, but to baselessly say that he's willing to cut some corners, is simply dishonest. Are there examples of him cutting corners, of which I'm not aware? He has every right to recruit Bernard. Frankly, any coach has any right to continue to recruit players who have even signed a LOI and have not actually enrolled in their school of choice. The NCAA did a de facto sanctioning of that by creating the early signing period. People wanted the early signing period because they wanted kids to be able to end their recruiting early. Unless the NCAA makes signing an LOI 100% binding, which they will never do, recruiting a kid shouldn't end until the kid is enrolled in school. Many things can change between December 15 and fall 2022 (for non early-enrollees), just as they did with Worthy. If we're saying a kid can handle the responsibility of being allowed to transfer "without restriction" and handle NIL money, then surely he/she can handle navigating the signing of an LOI up until enrollment.

AZBlue

Cutting some corners would be recruiting a kid AFTER he signs his LOI.  There are rules against this though they can be skirted (by not contacting the recruit directly iirc what Texas allegedly did) AND there is/was an ethical agreement among coaches that the recruiting stops after an LOI is signed.

Also I am pretty sure the LOI IS binding = Why else does the school have to release the player from it?  (It is a whole other kettle of fish regarding the negative PR if a school actually denied a release..)

Xavier Worthy is the first kid I recall that signed an LOI and then was let out of it without a major reason - i.e family situation or a HC/position coach leaving.  At least Worthy had the gripe of not being able to enroll early as promised. (because somebody at M f&cked up..).

Unless the UW kid was told he could no longer EE, I cannot see what legitimate reason there would be  (in the last 3 weeks!) for him to request out of his LOI.  There were obviously a LOT of coaching changes at UW, but the kid was aware of that prior to signing in Dec.  If he was not sure who to choose he could have deferred his signing date ---- as a top 300 kid it wasn't as if schools would not hold a spot.

Frankly....if there are no consequences and no rules then Tucker is doing exactly what is expected of him w that fat new contract....build the best roster possible now. MSU isnt going to simply recruit their way to the top so this makes total sense. Could it come back to bite him...hmmm, not sure. Guess it could happen to him but apparently he thinks its a risk worth taking.

I actually think Harbaugh should go after some of Texas' newly signed recruits to show that UM will not tolerate this bs happening to them. Given that there are no tampering rules the one way this might be managed is through 'gentlemen agreements' and implied consequences for falling out of line.

I have to think Moody goes to the NFL.  There is nothing better a kicker can do than win the Groza award, and he's not going to "get better" by staying another year the way a lineman or skill position might.  He puts the ball through the uprights, has distance...that's NFL worthy.

The reason why I like this format is because it gives a quick idea of how many we have at each position. For example, 4 at RB probably isn’t ideal so I wouldn’t be surprised if we got another via a 2022 recruit or a transfer. Whereas 19 DBs is probably still too crowded and we might expect that number to end up at 15 or 16. I’m not planning on doing this daily so relax if you are offended. But I wanted to update from yesterday because there were a couple I missed and obviously there were several that moved on.

There are still 2 in the secondary who are contemplating returning closer to home and getting playing time. Also look for Henning to be included more in running back packages. Gattis wants to use him more and the running back depth is a little light. Plus the receiving room will be a hard area to get playing time in.

Snazzy_McDazzy

January 6th, 2022 at 2:36 PM ^

Disagree that 19 is too many defensive backs. We essentially start 5 and it's a position you can never have too many quality players. That being said, given the ridiculous strength of our incoming DB class and the established starters returning, more transfers are inevitable.

Snazzy_McDazzy

January 6th, 2022 at 3:36 PM ^

Sorry to be pedantic but that doesn't seem right to me. Under Harbaugh, we've always had more scholarship players on defense than offense because we don't keep that many wide receivers or offensive linemen on scholarship. Not sure why this is but it's been pretty consistent for years.

So if we have roughly 44 scholarship defenders each season, and almost 50% of the starting defenders are defensive backs, then 19 would be a perfectly reasonable allotment for the secondary.

I believe Ross is out of eligibility

played every year 2017-2021 - 5 years - I don't believe he ever redshirted other than the covid year

Whittley may still have 1 year left at DT

Is Faustin still around or did I miss him leaving?

TK

January 6th, 2022 at 3:20 PM ^

Faustin has been gone for a while.

Whitley is out of eligibility. He played 2 years at Laney College and in 2019 for Oregon State. His final season was this year for us. Plus he is 26 and passed by younger players.

Ross could qualify for a medical redshirt for 2019 since he was injured and only played in four games. So technically he could come back for a six-year even though I don’t think he will. But he still on the list.

Quailman

January 6th, 2022 at 3:22 PM ^

Ross played in parts of 5 seasons, but there is the free Covid year, and in 2019 he only played in 4 games (you can play in up to 4 games and still redshirt). There was talk back then of UM redshirting Ross in 2019, so if they did, he could still have another season.

I do believe Whitley may still have another year of Elig left. But his is weird. He played two seasons of Juco. His junior year at Oregon State, he received a clock extension during the season, reverting to redshirt junior. So he was a RS Jr in 2019, was at OSU in 2020 but didnt play, and played this year.

Faustin left the program in early August due to medical reasons.

Moody still has eligibility?   I thought he and Robbins came in together?   He’s a great kicker.   Would think he’d declare.  I’d think he and Robbins will be kicking on Sunday.  Both have been outstanding.  Best kicker combo I can ever recall.
