Update on The Boy and The Work from Seth

Submitted by Seth on August 15th, 2023 at 9:30 AM

Thank you everybody for your thoughts, gifts, well wishes, and most of all patience. A quick update on my status and the boy's.

The Boy: He's been diagnosed with Miller Fisher (no relation) Syndrome a rare form of Guillain-Barré. Flood receded, we're assessing the damage and starting the rebuild. We're probably living at Mott at least into the start of football season, but he's still expected to make a full recovery.

The Work: This morning I resumed work on some of the business side, since MGoBlog needs to make money to exist. That began by putting our last bit of print copies of HTTV for sale--if you were on the interest list you got an email from me today. There are more people on the list than there are copies so jump on that.

The hope is once we get out of the ICU (this week? next?) we'll get to a new normal that affords me time to write again. Since the season is coming up quickly I plan to focus on that, and swing around on the end of the 2023 recruiting profiles during the bye week or next postseason.

The Thanks: I am constantly blown away by this community and their generosity. We aren't asking for anything right now but for those who keep insisting my family started a meal train for us that's been helping a ton. We also love spoiling our nurses, who have been INCREDIBLE. Venue got our nurses tacos last Friday and we still have them coming by to tell us how good they were (can confirm; I daddy-taxed a few first). Whoever sent them the 2 Starbucks travelers, that also made their day, and mine.

I'm a resident who actually saw you right before the elevator doors closed last week to head upstairs... I wish you and your son well and I'll be praying for family.

I was sick to my stomach waiting for the page to load, so glad to see those words when it finally did.

So happy to read that update about your son, Seth! Still sending up lots of prayers for you and the family.

Oh, and it's good to know I'm not the only dad out there who refers to his son as, "The Boy."

I can't imagine the stress and anxiety this causes in a family.  I hope I never have to experience it.  Glad he is expected to have a full recovery.  I'm a physician and have never heard of Miller Fisher so thank you for teaching me something as well.

he's still expected to make a full recovery.

This is more wonderful news than twenty consecutive nattys.  BTW, my friend here appreciated my surprise gift that you made possible, so thank you again for that and for everything else you've done for us.

Good news, wish the boy well.

I didn’t respond to your first post til days later but since I’ve  met your whole family, I figured I should offer something (peach blueberry crisp?) and since I go near your cousin’s house every day. Let me know.

My own son went through a scary medical situation last December that required emergency surgery, a hospital stay for a few days, and a long recovery.  I love that you are focused on the nurses.  They are the ones who truly make hospitals work and help make sure your son is getting better....and they are short staffed and spread thinner than ever before.  Glad to hear fellow supporters and finding ways to help them so they can help you.

I will also say that the day to day progress can feel so insignificant that it is scary and frustrating.  You want to see your son be "normal" and that's something you feel as a parent and for him personally.  It isn't about being a pro athlete or being a famous actor (or whatever other dreams he/you have for his future) - it is about being normal.  Cherish those small moments of progress and return to normalcy when you notice them.  It is okay to be frustrated that they aren't coming as often or frequent as you hope....but they will come.  Keep being positive in front of The Boy and keep up with whatever treatment, exercise, and mobility is recommended and he'll be back to normal before you realize it.

Also, as someone who works in the MedTech industry, make sure he's getting his teeth brushed and mouth cleaned multiple times per day while in the ICU.  The leading course of infection in hospitals is pneumonia and the best prevention is to clean his oral cavity to ensure nothing aspirates into his lungs.  Knowing the quality of the hospital you're at I'm sure this isn't a concern - but something so simple as a toothbrush is often low on the list of things you're worried about with all the technology he's relying on right now and yet it can be the most impactful.  (link)

I'm happy to hear the boy will make a full recover. I know work is important - to pay the bills, and obviously everyone here loves your work - so I'm glad you're able to do some, but honestly so much happier to hear you and your family are going to be ok.

You got this, brother. Loving bursting outta my heart to you and yours, like a care bear.

Hang in there!  I am so glad that you’ve got a good prognosis.  That’s all that matters.

How can we help with the revenue.  Do I need to click a few adds?  Reread a few posts? Seriously, I don’t know how it works. Just let me know.

Modestly encouraging news. Still a lot there for you, obviously. I hope your wife is holding up alright; something like this is a hard, hard thing on a mom.

Goes without saying that you don't owe us anything here, and prioritizing what work you are able to do is the right thing.

I could not possibly care less about recruiting profiles in this situation.  Just want to know that you and yours are doing well.

I hope you and the missus are taking care of yourselves a little bit as well

Seth, I was hope it's in good taste to make a suggestion regarding the content you plan on starting once you're ready: maybe take this opportunity to do something creatively different than you've done in the past?

Seeing the position-by-position previews, in my opinion, isn't as interesting as the subjective, opinionated stuff like 5 Questions 5 Answers, or the comedy stuff like B1G Has A Zoom Meeting. Though, I do get HTTV, so that probably adds to my bias. There are a ton of different sites that can guess who is going to start at each position; there is only 1 site that gets Seth's unique perspective and personality. Either way, I figured instead of trying to push yourself to fill the constraints of this site's traditional preview stuff, this could be good excuse to be creative and experiment with something different. And if it doesn't work, just go back next year, or whenever you aren't crunched on time.

That's awesome to hear things are looking good for your family, thank you for sharing with us!

Glad you posted again about this, Seth. You don't know me from Adam, but I wanted to write you as a member of the larger U of M family.

I've seen how hard GBS can be, especially the ICU period. I got Guillain-Barre Syndrome at 21 (2002) while a student at the University of Michigan. As a patient at the University of Michigan, I made my way from the ICU to rehab to release. You're in the thick of it right now, but it sounds like you have might have great news on potential discharge from ICU on the way. Feel free to ping me at any time to chat.

Michigan angle: I'll never forget Michigan players coming to my room, or meeting them with other rehab patients underneath Michigan stadium. John Navarre impressed me and I'll never forget.

I can relate to this as we have a special needs child with Angelman Syndrome.

insurance , social services / Workers , medicaid etc, medicial equipment etc'. Paperwork galore and dealing with idiots who do not know how to do their job.

Its basically adding another job to your life on paperwork alone per week and phone calls id say add 5-7 hour a week.

The best advice i can tell you the state is not on your side and ask for everything you can, question everything. and network with other special needs parents especially in the state and in your county. Document everything, save emails. Ask fro respite care services. Ask for Daily Living Skills hours. Get a social worker in your county.

FYI: if you don't ask your social worker , they won't tell you what you can get. FYI

I've had to take the state to court twice and won both times also.

But we fight for our loved ones . That is what were supposed to.
