Turnovers -- OMG!

Submitted by Enjoy Life on
Last year M ended up with a -10 TO Margin (Only 13 FBS teams did worse). This year was looking reasonable until the Iowa and PSU games (-8 TO Margin for those two). Last year we had a TOTAL of 12 INTs. This year we have 10 already! We are #85 in TO Gained, #98 in TO Lost, for an overall rating of #105 in TO Margin. Aaarggghhhhhh. EDIT: TO Margin is -7 this year.

Stats dont lie, but I think the team this year is better with ball security than last year's. A lot of those numbers are skewed by the last two games vs FBS schools. Also, what would you expect with two freshmen QBs getting the snaps? Now, here's the positive spin. We talked all off season about how teams with negative DD turnover margin have a historical tendency to improve their record the following year. I look forward to bringing this stat up again while we're getting ready for the Champs Sports Bowl.

Hang onto the damn ball = an obvious tendency to be in position to win more games. If we only have 1 or 2 to's vs Iowa we probably steal that game. 105 th overall in my opinion doesn't fall on the side of "improving" though. I have a ton of faith in RR but I often wonder if the coaches are so intent and focused on installing their system that the fundementals lack the work/attention.

I don't get why Michigan teams under Rich Rodriguez just seem prone to fumble. They might be the worst team in the country when it comes to catching things (Punts, Passes to TE's, etc.). Although, Abomination 16 accounts for quite a few interceptions, and I'd like to omit those to see where this team will go from here forward.

abomination 16? seriously? That honestly pisses me off that someone claiming to be a Michigan fan would write that. These kids are in a situation, as freshmen, that forces them to learn way faster than they should and this is how you choose to respond? I feel sorry for you man.

that we have so many underclassmen handling the ball. When this team is full of seniors who have run this crazy spread n shread for four years, they will hold on to the ball. We just have to watch these kids grow up these first few years, and when they click it's hard to stop. I am still just hoping for 7-5 and a bowl...

patience is needed in these dark times, something we michigan fans seem to have trouble with. USC had a few down years and look how dominant they are now. once we have players with experience and dont have to count on freshman as much, the consistency and ball control will improve. hang tough, bleed blue, just give them some time.

I stand by what I wrote above. The team is better than last year with ball security, but its hard to improve actual numbers with two true freshmen taking all the snaps. I really dont think this is the year, given that reality, to expect us to get back to a + TO margin. And, again, the games against Iowa and Penn State were against two of the best D's in the land. Wow. I'm shocked that we would have TOs. In those games, Tate and Denard acconted for, what, all but two of those....and a lot of that can be attributed to them being too raw to really go up against top flight college D's at the moment and not have a few hiccups.

As you note in your own post, "this year was looking reasonable until the Iowa and PSU games." Who's to say we won't have some games with a positive TO margin? Right now those two are skewing the sample.
