Turner is IN, 2010 opener in about a week
From behind the Scout wall...

Coach Rod said today if the player is listed on the roster, he is on the team. Welcome, Justin Turner, you are eligible.
Also, he mentioned we'll know the 2010 opponent in about a week, so no more threads please.
Finally, he stated there is an entire unit of walk-on O-linemen. That is cool. Chances should be decent that one or two of them plays here within the next 4 years.
Another thing - Coach Rod called out Darryl Stonum much like how Lloyd would call out talented players. Hopefully DS gets the message and gets on with contributing to 2009 success.
Stonum was highly rated. He better live up to it.
He owes you that much.
I sounded like a dick there. Hopefully he lives up to it.
Or else!!
With the O linemen we've been recruiting, I highly doubt any of them see the field.
A lot of people thought it was a longshot that Huyge would see the field, too. I know he wasn't a walk-on, but longshots come through sometimes.
I think there might be a good deal of walk-ons who will see the field in the next few years. Carr rarely played walk-ons. Maybe it's because they weren't good enough or maybe it's because he felt loyal to the kids he recruited.
Zach Johnson was our best ST coverage player last year. Moundros was a walk-on at one point. Jared Van Slyke might get an opportunity to play some this year. Bryant Nowicki played one game last year, which is probably a dream come true for a walk-on. Kevin Leach was second on the depth chart at WILL last year.
With O'Neill and Wermers departing, the uncertainty surrounding Mealer, only one OL committed so far this year...it might be more of a reality than you think.
This coming from the guy who gave me a hard time about walk-on's being legit just the other day!?
Excellent point, Magnus is cool but he tends to get hung up on word choice. If Magnus doesn't like the word you use, he may go back and forth with you for a 12 post, mandatory 8 count, 3 knockdown rule brawl, that is how he gets the majority of his points.
about Ricky Reyes punt-block TD last year. That was one of the only good parts of the Northwestern game.
I never said it was impossible, just that I would bet it won't happen. Sure, we could have a bunch of injuries or a walk-on could turn out to be fantastic. But our current OL is really young, and we've got a lot other talented young guys on the line.
It might happen in the future, but I strongly doubt any of the current freshman walk-ons will see the field. Will the tackles play over guys like Lewan, Omameh or Schofield? Will the interior guys snatch PT over Q, Barnum or Christian Pace?
Yes, it's always possible. This is one position where it's highly unlikely at this point in time.
Was Rich Rod calling Stonum out for his academics?
Scout made it sound.
FYI, Stonum was one of the people referenced in Kurt Wermer's crowd comment because Stonum "flunked all 3 of his winter classes".
but so did Wermers?
seeing that Stonum was a Carr recruit. So I guess it wasn't just RR bringing in the wrong kind of crowd.
I guess i would know the most about this crowd second to Kurt himself. I talked to him post the article about it and i have direct quotes about the crowd (one of the ones being above). The crowd being referenced is not just players being brought in by RR but some brought in by Carr. It was a generalized statement about some of the newer players (incoming freshmen and previous freshmen) whether they were recruited by Carr or RR.
...is that Wermers was just saying things to portray RichRod in the most negative light, even if it was a flat-out lie?
It sounds like you're his friend. If so, you might want to consider not posting about your private conversations with him anymore, since in doing so -- besides the obvious -- you're making him seem like a not-very-nice individual.
then it was truly not stated well at all.
"I really didn't get along with the new coaches," Wermers told The Times of Northwest Indiana. "They were bringing in a lot of different kids that were not my kind of crowd. Coach Carr's staff was a whole different ballgame. It was like a family. But when Rodriguez came in it was a whole different feeling. It was more of a business."
That quote is pretty clearly blaming RR for bringing in the new crowd. Maybe he didn't mean it that way. But that goes back to the point that he probably just shouldn't have said anything at all.
Well, I'm in that crowd Wermers was talking about, so I guess I know even more than you, and I can tell you it is completely untrue. Butt raping? Sure. Animal sacrifice? You bet. Black market macrame? Only on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. But we're all doing fine in the classroom. Wermers just asked for our help, and we decided to fuck him over with some wrong answers. What a dumbass!
(Wow, making shit up on the internet sure is easy)
Seriously, give it up. Even if you do have insider information 1) you present it poorly and vaguely which makes it hard to take seriously, 2) now you're just being a douche, and 3) just because you have this information doesn't mean you need to share it.
You're already a special snowflake. Trying too hard tarnishes that.
tuner is a beast, I really hope he lives up to the hype. Stonum really needs to step up he is really talented.
I am very impressed with the number of walk-ons, a few out-of-state freshman, and how many we retained from last year.
Is it just me, or is the idea that RR has attracted so many walk-ons (and retained a couple from Lloyd) fly-in-the-face of the anti-family theme.
To vonluntarily subject yourself to such anti-player coaches, while paying $20,000/yr., while being exposed to the wrath of Barwis pain, and having very little chance of playing (but for some chosen special teamers) ...
It doesn't add up. Otherwise Zach Johnson, Leach, Cuila, and a few other guys would be gone after RRs first year
Rodriguez did the same thing at West Virginia. I remember going to the Backyard Brawl every year (Lived in Pitt) and wondering why WVU had such a large team. It's great for depth and competition. I for one, am glad he's doing that.
Rodriguez was a walk-on at one point. I assume this is one of the reasons he values that aspect of the program so much.
I like your points about the importance of walk-on players for team cohesion. I think the excision of naysayers like Boren, Wermers, etc. and the inclusion of people who want to play for Michigan will strengthen the resolve of this team dramatically. RR definitely has the right idea for this one.

believed walk-ons were equal to scholly players..I'm glad to see all the walk ons
With our severe lack of depth on the D line, especially at tackle, wondering if some of the walk-on OLs switch over.
jeez if this is a big time opponent i'm definately getting tickets.
also nice to see so many walkons. i highly doubt the family values are erroding like buckeye bored and wermers said. i'm sure they just couldn't take it.
Actually, the 2010 opener will not be "in about a week." I believe it is being scheduled for sometime in 2010.
When I read that I just picture you going "Holy Crap the 2010 opener is a week away!" Then you clicked the link and realized that the 2010 opener wasn't a week away and felt the need to point that out.
I know you were being sarcastic (atleast I'm hoping) Just the first thing that jumped into my head. : >
/sarcasm.
though apparently someone thought I was serious as I got a -1 for it.
Or they hate funny jokes.
There. I said it. It's out there now. I feel stronger and more empowered already. He's just not my kinda crowd. For a visual recreation of what happened, the first 30 seconds of this video sums up what he did to me:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zvTRQr7ns8
Wermers warned me about him(I talked to him post-article). I should have listened.
How did it compare to being raped by Mike Hart? Lloyd's guys were classier.
cool story bro
Based on the roster numbers for the incoming freshmen and the walk-ons, I wonder if RR is saving the 50 and 60 numbers exclusively for walk-on linemen. Would be an interesting new tradition.
great thread thank you
