Tuesday night hoops thread
Probably won’t have many takers here, but why not. Indiana getting blasted by Iowa. Not sure that bodes well for Sunday. Going to be playing an angry team. Virginia handling business so far against Clemson. That helps. Duke in a close one. Sparty tips at 9. “March” madness officially starting tomorrow.
Anybody watching?

Indiana is a fraudulent team. They are not as good as their ranking indicates. This puts us into the top 4 of the Big Ten as of today so great work Hawkeyes.
February 28th, 2023 at 8:45 PM ^
I don’t like playing talented teams coming off a loss. Just my personal opinion. I would have preferred Indiana feeling cozy going into Sunday.
February 28th, 2023 at 8:54 PM ^
Nothing to fear with Indiana as long as Juwan Doesn't play Tschetter double the minutes he plays Reed.
February 28th, 2023 at 10:01 PM ^
agree. i really don't think there are many BIG teams with a really good 4 that can expose reed. let him get his 20+ minutes.
I don’t like playing talented teams coming off a loss at home on senior night.
Totally agree. Iowa was lucky. Got IU in a letdown game after a huge road win at rival Purdue.
They'll regroup and be focused for us. Sigh...
February 28th, 2023 at 8:52 PM ^
They're a good team but I do think the gap between a lot of teams in the Big 10 isn't particularly great. I would have liked for IU to have won this game and not been angry when UM shows up but that's the deal, I guess.
Iowa is absolutely going to be a wild card in the tourney - they can shoot themselves past anyone and could also shoot themselves out of the first round. Even in this game IU is getting good shots and just aren't hitting them.
February 28th, 2023 at 9:56 PM ^
Isn't that the story of Iowa for a decade? Could beat anyone by 20 but could also lose to anyone. And in the NCAAT, more often the latter.
February 28th, 2023 at 9:04 PM ^
Need Bufkin on Hood-Schifino. Him and TJD are the only ones who really strike the fear in anyone. They both played well against us last time. They were without Race Thompson last time but I don’t think he’s a major difference maker unless he matches up with Cheddar for long periods of time.
February 28th, 2023 at 9:54 PM ^
to be fair, they lost their starting PG in X. Johnson in Dec; easily their 3rd best player and much better than our loss in Llewelyn.
February 28th, 2023 at 10:00 PM ^
Yeah, I would expect this happening at Carver, but this team got bitch slapped at home in both halves. Hard to defend that.
February 28th, 2023 at 10:03 PM ^
IU was also eliminated from the B1G race tonight. There was a chance we’d be playing them with the title on the line.
February 28th, 2023 at 8:46 PM ^
I was going to start this thread.. you beat me to it. Why? Well, I was looking at the scores and couldn’t believe Iowa was up 20+ against Indiana in Bloomington.
February 28th, 2023 at 8:50 PM ^
Iowa is only shooting 58% from both 2’s and 3’s…
February 28th, 2023 at 8:53 PM ^
Yeah, IU is going to come out on Sunday with their hair on fire. I think the urgency for Thursday just went up, if that’s possible. This was not an ideal outcome for Michigan, IMO.
February 28th, 2023 at 8:57 PM ^
Well, Illinois is also going to be playing pissed off on their senior night, after their own shitshow versus Ohio State.
Michigan ends their season: senior night visitor, senior night visitor.
Fuck off, B1G scheduler guy.
February 28th, 2023 at 10:00 PM ^
Why is it that when we lose, no one says we’re going to be pissed off in the next game? How does that logic only apply to our opponents?
February 28th, 2023 at 10:09 PM ^
I think it applies to Michigan too. Like when MSU was coming to Crisler I thought that was a bad spot for them to be catching Michigan.
February 28th, 2023 at 8:58 PM ^
It was already going to be senior day in Bloomington; there's only so much amping up a team can do. And realistically, UM will be just as focused on a win and you never know how that inspires a team.
There's no real ideal outcome for Michigan anymore that isn't just them winning games.
Two things I'd like to see Michigan do 1) Less turnovers, they've been sloppy more often than not and 2) offensive rebounds as in several games, they got burned.
It's been hard to watch them play because of those two facets of their game.
February 28th, 2023 at 8:55 PM ^
Looks like Clemson is going to lose, so thank you to UVa for remembering how to play basketball after a week-long brain fart.
February 28th, 2023 at 8:59 PM ^
That UVA win was a big one for Michigan. That's a pretty big hit for Clemson's resume, they needed that one.
And hey, look at Michigan opponent Lipscomb pulling the upset of Stetson and into the A-Sun semi-finals!
February 28th, 2023 at 9:40 PM ^
The riots are already beginning in Nashville. Ain't no party like a Lipscomb party.
February 28th, 2023 at 8:59 PM ^
Out of the bubble watch earlier we got a Virginia win and a Lipscomb win for net ranking help. Some much bigger games on tonight though.
February 28th, 2023 at 10:26 PM ^
It’s been a tough season if we are touting a Lipscomb win as keynote for our resume.
February 28th, 2023 at 11:14 PM ^
When you lose to CMU and they are around 309 in the country any win helps
February 28th, 2023 at 9:21 PM ^
Tom Izzo punching his palm. He's not happy
February 28th, 2023 at 9:21 PM ^
Nice of MSU not to show up
February 28th, 2023 at 9:27 PM ^
All we need is one of MSU or Pitt to not suck ass but it ain’t happening.
February 28th, 2023 at 9:47 PM ^
Pitt is somehow #25 per the AP poll and yet aren't even in the top 50 per NET. There's a non-zero chance they'll win the ACC (they're currently leading it, 1/2 a game up on Miami), and yet to the computers they're worse than 2/3 of the Big 12. I think the ACC is a mediocre conference this year but it's sort of crazy that they're being discounted as much as they are.
February 28th, 2023 at 9:27 PM ^
Has there ever been a weirder team of weird guys than this Nebraska squad? And yet, they are somehow 8-10 in conference. I’ve been impressed by what Collins has done this year at Northwestern, but what Hoiberg is doing is off the charts.
February 28th, 2023 at 9:30 PM ^
I am glad that we don't play in Lincoln this year. I believe we are the only team that Nebraska lost to this month.
February 28th, 2023 at 9:33 PM ^
Speaking of records and conference records, MSU would to 17-12 and 9-9 if these lose tonight. 17-13 and 9-10 if these lose out. Is that a tourney resume? If they lost in the first round of the BTT I honestly don’t know. I know I know, they beat Kentucky like 4 months ago, but they are not playing like a tournament team.
February 28th, 2023 at 9:43 PM ^
Yeah, it seems a bit weird that the general consensus is that they're a 7 seed (with a 10-10 record vs. Q1 and Q2) while Wisconsin, another mediocre team, is hanging out on the bubble with a similar 10-10-ish record in Q1 + 2 games.
Izzo always gets the benefit of the doubt but it feels like MSU was just christened a tourney team sometime around mid-January and the fact they have basically been .500 in conference since then doesn't matter.
February 28th, 2023 at 9:40 PM ^
Nebraska is like Michigan in that they had some new guys transfer in, suffered a couple of injuries to said guys, and it really messed with their chemistry but it also helped shake out their roster a bit. And if there's any way UM could snag Tominaga if he wants to transfer I'd be 100% behind that move. He's a defensive issue but just a deadly shooter out there.
You said it messed with Nebraska's chemistry, have they ever had chemistry? Lol.

Sparty being sparty man have they become irrelevant in basketball
February 28th, 2023 at 9:48 PM ^
i just can't find it in me to root for sparty. i actually think they're lucky to only be down a dozen at half.
can someone help me out with the nebraska jerseys? what are they, what is that stuff on the front, looks like an accidental mustard spill.
February 28th, 2023 at 9:55 PM ^
February 28th, 2023 at 10:01 PM ^
maryland's looks like they found a few different fabrics in a quilting club, a bit too much coffee, and voila, they've got some wild jerseys.
nebraska's looks like a vacation map on the side and somebody spit up baby food on the front, maybe some carrots or the applesauce and junior blew it out his nose onto the jersey.
February 28th, 2023 at 9:51 PM ^
At halftime, Sparty has 10 more shots than Nebraska - unfortunately, they only made 28% of them and trail by 12.
The wheels are off after the Iowa choke job.
Sparty pretty well sucks.
February 28th, 2023 at 9:53 PM ^
Tyson Walker has to be one of the cockiest slightly-above-average player I have ever seen. Dude is always jawing and smirking like he’s an All American
February 28th, 2023 at 10:27 PM ^
I, for one, would've liked to have him and 2 year consistency at PG over what we've had so far. I think Dug's ceiling is higher... not sure he'll be s good from 3. Also, I don't think walker is overly cocky.
Agree! Walker actually seems like a decent dude. I've never once thought wow he's a cocky Spartan!
February 28th, 2023 at 10:53 PM ^
I disagree all around. He's really, really good. He makes some shots that don't deserve being shot nor made...but he hits them. Doesn't seem very unlikable to me either. Really can't say I've seem him chirp much at all. Meanwhile we have...Hunter! I've been wishing we had Walker for months now. But Dug has come around somewhat so it's alleviated that thought somewhat.
February 28th, 2023 at 9:53 PM ^
one other thing about sparty, but maybe i've missed it with other teams including our own. it looks like they have about 15 coaches on the bench and the row behind. two-deep in those grey sweatshirts/pullovers, and then and additional line behind the players part of the bench.
do we have that many, too? it's like a coach for every player.
February 28th, 2023 at 10:07 PM ^
I’ve been very begrudgingly rooting for Sparty the last couple games for the first time I can recall in my life, with the hopes of gaining a quad 1 win. Feels gross.
February 28th, 2023 at 10:10 PM ^
Things that are gross feel gross. I'm not going there.
February 28th, 2023 at 10:38 PM ^
I want good things for them in the short term
I rooted for them in 1979 to win it all, but in my defense I was only 10 years old and didn't know any better. College football was on every Saturday in my house, and Keith Jackson and Bob Ufer calling Michigan games cemented my football fandom. We hardly watched any basketball until 1979. Soon after that I switched my hoops allegiance to Michigan and haven't rooted for Staee since.

Bracket Matrix just made their nightly update and we're officially on 11 brackets, essentially the 3rd team out. Just below Arizona State, Wisconsin (both of which are the last teams in the field, Oklahoma State, North Carolina, and just above Utah State, Clemson, and Penn State.
Clemson losing basically eliminates them unless they go very, very far in the ACC tourney (even that might not be enough).
