Tuesday night hoops thread

Submitted by goblu330 on February 28th, 2023 at 8:36 PM

Probably won’t have many takers here, but why not.  Indiana getting blasted by Iowa.  Not sure that bodes well for Sunday.  Going to be playing an angry team.  Virginia handling business so far against Clemson.  That helps.  Duke in a close one.  Sparty tips at 9.  “March” madness officially starting tomorrow.

Anybody watching?

They're a good team but I do think the gap between a lot of teams in the Big 10 isn't particularly great.  I would have liked for IU to have won this game and not been angry when UM shows up but that's the deal, I guess.

Iowa is absolutely going to be a wild card in the tourney - they can shoot themselves past anyone and could also shoot themselves out of the first round.  Even in this game IU is getting good shots and just aren't hitting them.

I was going to start this thread.. you beat me to it.  Why?   Well, I was looking at the scores and couldn’t believe Iowa was up 20+ against Indiana in Bloomington.

It was already going to be senior day in Bloomington; there's only so much amping up a team can do.  And realistically, UM will be just as focused on a win and you never know how that inspires a team.

There's no real ideal outcome for Michigan anymore that isn't just them winning games.

That UVA win was a big one for Michigan. That's a pretty big hit for Clemson's resume, they needed that one.

And hey, look at Michigan opponent Lipscomb pulling the upset of Stetson and into the A-Sun semi-finals!

Pitt is somehow #25 per the AP poll and yet aren't even in the top 50 per NET.  There's a non-zero chance they'll win the ACC (they're currently leading it, 1/2 a game up on Miami), and yet to the computers they're worse than 2/3 of the Big 12.  I think the ACC is a mediocre conference this year but it's sort of crazy that they're being discounted as much as they are.

Has there ever been a weirder team of weird guys than this Nebraska squad? And yet, they are somehow 8-10 in conference. I’ve been impressed by what Collins has done this year at Northwestern, but what Hoiberg is doing is off the charts.

Speaking of records and conference records, MSU would to 17-12 and 9-9 if these lose tonight.  17-13 and 9-10 if these lose out.  Is that a tourney resume?  If they lost in the first round of the BTT I honestly don’t know.  I know I know, they beat Kentucky like 4 months ago, but they are not playing like a tournament team.

Yeah, it seems a bit weird that the general consensus is that they're a 7 seed (with a 10-10 record vs. Q1 and Q2) while Wisconsin, another mediocre team, is hanging out on the bubble with a similar 10-10-ish record in Q1 + 2 games.

Izzo always gets the benefit of the doubt but it feels like MSU was just christened a tourney team sometime around mid-January and the fact they have basically been .500 in conference since then doesn't matter.

Nebraska is like Michigan in that they had some new guys transfer in, suffered a couple of injuries to said guys, and it really messed with their chemistry but it also helped shake out their roster a bit.  And if there's any way UM could snag Tominaga if he wants to transfer I'd be 100% behind that move.  He's a defensive issue but just a deadly shooter out there.

i just can't find it in me to root for sparty.  i actually think they're lucky to only be down a dozen at half.

can someone help me out with the nebraska jerseys?  what are they, what is that stuff on the front, looks like an accidental mustard spill.

maryland's looks like they found a few different fabrics in a quilting club, a bit too much coffee, and voila, they've got some wild jerseys.

nebraska's looks like a vacation map on the side and somebody spit up baby food on the front, maybe some carrots or the applesauce and junior blew it out his nose onto the jersey.

At halftime, Sparty has 10 more shots than Nebraska - unfortunately, they only made 28% of them and trail by 12.

The wheels are off after the Iowa choke job.

Sparty pretty well sucks.

Tyson Walker has to be one of the cockiest slightly-above-average player I have ever seen. Dude is always jawing and smirking like he’s an All American

I disagree all around.  He's really, really good.  He makes some shots that don't deserve being shot nor made...but he hits them.  Doesn't seem very unlikable to me either.  Really can't say I've seem him chirp much at all.  Meanwhile we have...Hunter!  I've been wishing we had Walker for months now.  But Dug has come around somewhat so it's alleviated that thought somewhat.

one other thing about sparty, but maybe i've missed it with other teams including our own.  it looks like they have about 15 coaches on the bench and the row behind. two-deep in those grey sweatshirts/pullovers, and then and additional line behind the players part of the bench.

do we have that many, too?   it's like a coach for every player.

I rooted for them in 1979 to win it all, but in my defense I was only 10 years old and didn't know any better. College football was on every Saturday in my house, and Keith Jackson and Bob Ufer calling Michigan games cemented my football fandom. We hardly watched any basketball until 1979. Soon after that I switched my hoops allegiance to Michigan and haven't rooted for Staee since.

Bracket Matrix just made their nightly update and we're officially on 11 brackets, essentially the 3rd team out. Just below Arizona State, Wisconsin (both of which are the last teams in the field, Oklahoma State, North Carolina, and just above Utah State, Clemson, and Penn State.

Clemson losing basically eliminates them unless they go very, very far in the ACC tourney (even that might not be enough).
