TTB: Where 2017 class stacks up with Michigan's all-time recruits

Submitted by Magnus on

I put together a post about where Michigan's 2017 class slots in with every other recruit going back to 2000. In case you're unsure about how good this class is, the 2017 class includes 11 of Michigan's top 100 recruits during that 18-year span (LINK), and Donovan Peoples-Jones is the fifth-highest ranked guy in that time.

How does the overall roster talent (probably difficult to formulate considering attrition so perhaps starters) compare to previous years (2000-2017)? My guess is a top 4 starting roster...and climbing (obviously some 2017 projections). The starting talent and depth is definitely trending upwards, and quickly.

Well. that was depressing. DPJ is like Kelly Baraka and Aubrey Solomon is like Earnest Shazor and Derrick Green. I'm surprised you were able to finish your project after that start.

This class will be making a huge impact of the field. It will be interesting to see what percentage of this class starts as freshmen. I know some prognosticators are forecasting a few more losses for the team during the 2017 season but I'm hoping for another great season with an upset win over OSU in Ann Arbor.  Our secondary is young, so the defense may give up more points. However, the offense will have more weapons and may end up scoring more points. As during the last several years the offensive line will be the big question mark.

That was a lot of fun and a good ride down memory lane. I tried to post there, but it was my password, not my username I forgot, so I put in request for email in order to reset it.

I forgot just how highly Pat Massey was rated and Engelmon certainly brought back memories. IIRC, he was a so-so qb somewhere from KY that would absolutely pound you as a safety. Young man put everything he had into those hits. A difficult player not to like. I was waiting for some of the greats, but then I remembered DPJ is the only one that could draw comparisons there, but the class, as a whole, should have a hell of a three year period. Hate that we have to use than now, instead of the four years as in the past.

As much as I like recruiting I was surprised at just how high some of Brady's were. The disappointments on the field made it difficult to follow recruiting for me because my expectations woulld grow accordingly and, of course, they'd crash much more rapidly. One season, I left for the south a full month, possibly month and a half early. I just hung at San Felipe on the Baja for  that time, as far removed from football as I could get. But I will give him credit and acknowledge I loved watching his recruits the past two seasons, especially the DEs with great coaching. The entire backend were greast, as well. EZ to see where he really missed.

As stated, fun post and also made me realize just how blessed we've been as fans. Sure there are schools that matchup and have even higher profile names, especially in recent years. Such are the ebbs and flows of college football, but just that small sample size, with some of those years not being so kind, made it easy, while scrolliing through the names that there are dozens of the 128 schools comprising the FBS that would love to trade in some of our "down periods" for their great ones. We've seen, and are about to again, watch some of the nation's best annually, as it should be.

eras. Have lot of faith in Mr. Harbaugh, and this time I am able, like the rest of you, to watch it from its birth going forward.

Bo told Canham he'd have it done in five years, but hell he had no idea he'd unearth more future AAs than in any other five year period in UM history, prior to any of his recruiting classes taking the field. It was Nov 22, 1969 as the "official date" I became both a cfb fan and UM fan. Like the rest of you, they blew away second place Detroit Lions. That date is as easy to remember for the game than it is as the date of JFK's assasination, 6 years earlier. Jimmy' s first two seasons were similar in that respect, but only defensively and too short lived. He had to use a lot of creativity, especially in season one to manufacture points. So glad to see he was up to the taks.

And there are many- especially anyone not a UM fan- to look at how much we lost from last season and start marking up probably Ls for UM. But as certain as that is occuring, its just as obvious to those that have been paying attention how, after just the end of his second full season, that "the pieces" are coming together, but posts of this nature are a great reminder of the type of talent that is becoming common place in AA. And with Brown in control on that side of the ball and fielding a unit that has been paying attention and has the same number of stars as the offense has, personally I'm expecting one of the top units in the conference.

The offense, young as hell, is also talented as hell and most importantly, very very hard for all but the best defenses in the conference to keep up with once they hit the second level. We're going to get a hell of a lot more than expeected because Harbaugh knows the team better than the media, cfb fans in general and even UM fans. And Harbaugh expects more. He is strange, yes. But he wanted that bulleyes for a reason.
