tressel to be there when we play osu?

what a great way to remind everyone of how much clarett was paid.

It just says they're honoring the NCAA Championship team. It doesn't include any information about whether or not Tressel will attend.
September 14th, 2012 at 5:06 PM ^
FWIW, Columbus radio reported that Gene Smith extended the offer to 'everyone' affiliated with the title team, without specifically naming Tressel or Clarrett. It sounds like Tressel will be invited and will choose whether to be there at his own discresion.
September 14th, 2012 at 5:32 PM ^
I'd imagine Tressel will get invited. Smith and Gee are probably still afraid he might fire them.
September 14th, 2012 at 4:48 PM ^
You know, I always liked Jim Tressel. He was a worthy adversary and got a raw deal.
September 14th, 2012 at 4:51 PM ^
No, I'm serious. He was, objectively, a great coach.
September 14th, 2012 at 4:56 PM ^
The same one that says that, objectively, Bernie Madoff was a good businessman?
September 14th, 2012 at 5:03 PM ^
I don't like people who write books about their own morality while they actively cheat at what they are doing.
September 14th, 2012 at 5:07 PM ^
But not a lot of people get the chance to retire after lying to their bosses and failing to meet regulatory standards in their job description. He got a very cushy deal compared to what 99% of workers would end up with.
September 14th, 2012 at 5:05 PM ^
Joe Paterno was a great coach too. Do you think he got a raw deal? I'm guessing that you do.
September 15th, 2012 at 2:16 AM ^
Paterno's name shouldn't be used cheaply. Outside of Dave Bliss at Baylor, there has never been another college coach worthy of comparison to that crime and might never be again.
Tressel was a huckster, giving his false image the hard sell. That's not worthy of someone who made fellow humans' blood run cold.
September 14th, 2012 at 5:28 PM ^
Urban, Les, and Mack Brown (and a few others) exposed some pretty glaring blemishes on his greatness as a coach. I'm sticking with "good enough to win the B1G most years."
September 14th, 2012 at 5:42 PM ^
Dominating the Big Ten for a decade isn't enough? What about Bo?
September 14th, 2012 at 6:38 PM ^
Well, Tressel won 6 times, but the B1G was a powerhouse when Bo was coaching, it was down the years Tressel was winning. Who was realistically going to challenge him the last 3-5 years, Wisconsin? Sparty? RR?
September 14th, 2012 at 6:41 PM ^
Tressel beat Michigan 8 times, not 6. He beat them 6 in a row from 2004-2010.
September 14th, 2012 at 7:02 PM ^
September 14th, 2012 at 7:42 PM ^
I mean won the big ten 6 times. Point being that Ohio wasn't a national superpower. When they went to bowl games they were routinely dominated by SEC teams, they'd look like world beaters at times, then USC would absolutely crush them over and over and over again. Texas always had his number, too. He also had some inexplicable losses to teams he should've soundly beaten. At Iowa and at Purdue in 04 were embarrassing, home to Illinois in 07 was inexplicable, they dropped a turd at home to Penn State in 08, at Purdue in 09 was telling as well, and Wisconsin in 2010 shouldn't have happened either, but Tressel couldn't beat any of the "great" teams, and would regularly fall flat on the road to average teams, even at the height of his career.
September 14th, 2012 at 7:43 PM ^
Hate it to break it to you, but you could say almost the same thing about Bo
September 14th, 2012 at 7:40 PM ^
Well, Tressel won 6 times, but the B1G was a powerhouse when Bo was coachingUmm....what? That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard The Big Ten was not a powerhouse when Bo took over, hence "Big 2 and Little 8". It wasn't until 1978 that a team besides Michigan or Ohio State won the conference. You can attribute some of that non-variety to Bo's dominance (like Tressel's), but really it comes down to the fact that the Big Ten wasn't good during either one's tenure
September 14th, 2012 at 9:15 PM ^
cheater and hypocrite...yes..he was very good at that.
September 14th, 2012 at 4:59 PM ^
"and got a raw deal" Ummmm..... What???
September 14th, 2012 at 5:10 PM ^
I think he's a good coach, but his firing was justified. I think the same about Steve Fisher.
September 14th, 2012 at 8:05 PM ^
I hate to say but I consider Tressel a great coach, ....but he is still a cheating scum-bag douche and I don't know how anyone can like him unless you're from Ohio or a Sparty fan that loved living through Tressel's success against Michigan when Michigan was beating MSU for 6 straight seasons.
This is all the past, though. OSU is going to honor their national championship team after 10 years like any team would and I wouldn't blame OSU and Tressel himself for wanting the head coach of the team that year to be in attendance.
September 14th, 2012 at 9:47 PM ^
He got a raw deal only in the sense that Gene Smith should have been let go along with him.
September 14th, 2012 at 4:50 PM ^
Not with a five year show cause sanction on his head.
September 14th, 2012 at 5:01 PM ^
Where are his seats? He probably paid at lot for them on Stubhub!
September 14th, 2012 at 5:18 PM ^
I hope he's there to watch us bury them at their dedication game. I hope he makes another speech about how they're going to kick our asses, too. Pile it on, as much as you can, before we push them around in their own house. Bring it.

Tressel is in now way banned from campus. He's a retired employee with all the benefits that entails (gym use, parking, whatever).
You might be thinking of Pryor, who can't use any of the athletic department facilities for a period of time.

September 14th, 2012 at 5:43 PM ^
Good, he'll be there to cry like a bitch along with the other idiots from ohio when Michigan humiliates ohio in front of their fans.
September 14th, 2012 at 6:40 PM ^
Oh boy.
September 14th, 2012 at 5:46 PM ^
Tressell will be there. Just like Steve Fisher will be here if we ever raise the banners for the Fab 5 teams.

"Club President Laura Ambro said Thursday that the club has so far received four confirmations for the Nov. 27 event, from Fox, who will host the event, Krenzel, running back Maurice Clarett and Tressel." - from the Cleveland Plain-Dealer article
Ostensibly, he will be at the banquet which will celebrate the 2002 team. If he's at the game, then Mike Doss did at least point out that the important thing is to support the current team under Urban Meyer. On the field, his achievements are noted and off the field, his shortcomings are also noted, and indeed, his coaching tenure ended quite justifiably with his essential canning via resignation. That being said, if Ohio wants to honor its championship team from a decade ago, then I personally wouldn't have a problem with Tressel being a part of it regardless of my personal opinion of the man - I don't think he's restricted from being on campus, and as he has since taken another position at another school, in a way, it doesn't much matter now.

Coming from a M fan in killumbus, hatred for the work he did against Michigan and the B1G aside, Tress was a great individual in this community and did a lot of great things for the city and the state. I truly believe he was/is a good person with a high moral character, but made a poor decision just like we all do sometimes. I know that I might get shelled for this, it is just my personal experience.
That being said, I cannot wait to be at the game and watch the suckeyes get spanked in the shoe after their little anniversary celebration.
GO BLUE!
September 15th, 2012 at 9:06 AM ^
away from his work, I truly believe his "poor decision" was made a long time ago. He decided cheating was okay. Perhaps, like some of the members here, he didn't have much respect for the NCAA and their rules. But that decision led to more poor decisions, leaving a trail of lies and ethical lapses. Undoubtably he is a rather complex individual. Rather than his preachy, hypocritical books, a true tell-all autobiography would be a fascinating read.
