"Tremendous Makes Friends With Wyatt Shallman"

Rather a slow day (really, the last week overall, save for the burst of posts regarding the NFL Draft) here, so I thought I would share this...

Tremendous recently did an excellent interview with 2013 commit Wyatt Shallman. You can read the full interview here:

http://thisismichiganfootball.blogspot.com/2012/04/tremendous-makes-friends-with-wyatt.html

I would, however, like to quote the well-worded start of the summary, which caps what I think is one of the best interviews by Tremendous to date:

"Wyatt is a multi-faceted guy who is already developing a chip on his shoulder coming into this season. For Michigan, he'll be a running back. Any talk otherwise should end now and I think he's ready to prove some people wrong."

"Funny isn't it, how naughty dentists always make that one fatal mistake."

....was a favorite of mine:

" I really just want to prove people wrong. I'm not saying people are talking trash, but everyone wants to label me as "big white kid who supposedly will play running back but end up at fullback", you know what I mean?"

I like this sort of drive. He refuses to be typecast in a role, and instead wants to prove that he can play the position he was recruited to play and well at that. He'll do just fine, from the sound of it.

I'll be happy if he's laying down the lumber as a running back or a member of the d- line.

Here's hoping for a bright future. This team does try hard and I will continue to support them.

I like that he asked him (and I guess Deveon) about how they feel about the interest in Isaac.  When they get to A2 Ty won't have wide open races to the endzone and Shallman/Smith won't be able to power everybody without a lot of technique.  Sounds like CC's coach is an interesting cat.

I like the chip on his shoulder but I'm concerned what might happen if he doesn't see the field as a running back. Not doubting his ability, but the fact is there will be stiff competition and someone is likely going to get left out. Does he switch to a position of need or will he transfer? I'll give him the benefit of the doubt though, in everything else in the interview, he sounds like a high character kid.

Don't be concerned.  If he gets his shot at RB and isn't seeing the field and the coaches think he can get more PT elsewhere, he'll take it.

I was a running back on every football team I played on growing up.  My sophomore year we had a super-athletic kid transfer to our school (he was a freshman but played JV) and he got the starting RB spot over me.  I didn't want to be on the sidelines and my coaches didn't either, so they moved me to safety where I got to start.  I would have rather been the starting tailback, but I wasn't the best one and being the starting safety was better than the back-up RB.

Cool story bro aside, that's how most guys think, and if Shallman isn't getting many touches at RB, he'll happily move positions if it gets him on the field.

as copied and pasted from that Tremendous interview:

Tremendous: Because I cover the topic extensively and take questions on it all the time, I'm always curious as to how you and maybe Deveon Smith feel when you see fans, whether it be on social networks or anywhere, say that we "need" a guy like Ty Isaac in this class? Does that motivate you?

Wyatt: I'd say so, yeah and that's absolutely nothing against Ty Issac. He's an absolute animal and you can't take away anything he's done. The same goes for Deveon. They're both great running backs.

I guess I'll just have to get used to it.
