TOP GUN RECRUIT: Weber Draws Inspiration from Gordon and Runs for 404 Yards Tonight

Damn.  He had subs mustard.

University of Michigan commit Mike Weber rushed for 404 yards and five touchdowns on 32 carries in Cass Tech's 48-35 win over Chippewa Valley Saturday for the Division 1 regional title.

Weber was not ready for his prep career to end, and his play demonstrated that. The senior tailback burst past defenders early and often, totaling 10 rushes that resulted in double-digit gains.

Battling cramps late in the first half, Weber gulped a bottle of mustard, a method his father taught him.

Four of Weber's five touchdowns came on massive runs. His lowest output for a score was a 6-yard rush on his third carry of the game. The other four were on rushes of at least 44 yards.

After the game, Cass Tech coach Tom Wilcher was asked where Weber ranks amongst the elite running backs that played in the Detroit Public School League. The answer was simple.

"Probably one of the best we've ever had in the PSL," Wilcher said. "There's a long history of backs. I can only say right now, in this period of time right here, I know Mike's probably the best running back that we had in the last 20-30 years."

I stopped following recruiting to the levels I had (for my sanity) when we still had the top class in the country. Once kids started bailing (or are likely going to for those not officially gone) I didn't really blame them or care. The crap silver lining to this year is the size of the recruiting class. I think we NEED to keep those three and any new coach will get his numbers. The only difference being caliber of coach will very likely = the caliber of recruit. Homerun hire (Harbaugh, etc) and I think we're as good out better off than before the wheels cane off. A "meh" hire will still get the numbers but they may be lower end guys. Regardless, those three (I'll throw in that OL) are must keeps.
