TomVH: FWIW on Receivers

Submitted by TomVH on

I know a few people have expressed concern over one of the recruits saying that the Michigan coaches told him they will only be taking one receiver. As of right now I don't believe that's the case. I believe they will take two. That can change with other numbers and other commitments, but as of now I think they would take two.

I also hate the idea of using a scholarship on a fullback, but it's not a terrible thing. If you look at the SDSU offense last year, their fullback was 5-11 210 lbs. And he was third on the team in rushing and fourth in receiving. So once you get over his awful rankings (which will go up now that he is committed to Michigan, see:Jeremy Clark) he could be a great pickup. A four year starter and good contributor to the offense is well worth a scholarship.

Fullbacks are like anything else...you get what you pay for. More on target, if you offer a kicker, the chances are better you will get a good kicker. If you trust the job to walk ons, you run the risk of bad kicking. If you trust the fullback position to nothing but massive walk ons, you get Moundros, McColghan, etc., who may be big in size and large in spirit, but less than impressive in performance.

Fullback seems to be important to the offense Hoke is trying to create. He tried to get one last year. He pushed for several candidates this year. It doesn't do any good to push getting one back another year just because there's better talent on the table. There may well be, but that won't solve the problem of not having a competent fullback.

As to our new brother's size, this fits deeper into the philosophy of creating matchup problems. For all Brian's hollering about 'Manball', Hoke seems to put a premium on this. Funchess is not a prototypical power football tightend. He is a versatile matchup headache for any enemy. This new fullback fits into that mold of versatile players who can be relied upon to do something well, and potentially do several other things as well. Hoke is creating a true, three dimensional offense capable of being powerful yet unpredictable.

For the record, I want two DT's also. And two wideouts. It seems like we still have room for them. And Wormley. But even if he didn't, there's method to this madness. So enough with the "I hate fullbacks" meme.

While I disagree with the first sentence, I agree with the second. The point is, getting that one every four years. The reason we have two is because #1 flamed out in disastrous fashion. I don't think many people were complaining about snaring #2, Wile. The argument shouldn't be made "have two more years of absurdly poor kicking and THEN get a new schollie kicker." We had a need, it needed to be filled. We also have no meaningful fullback, and now that need is (in theory) also filled.

Before fullback was a luxury in a Rich Rod offense...how many of Michigan's starting fullbacks were walk-on's without a scholarship? Guys like Bunch, Leggette, Askew (when he wasn't playing RB) etc. certainly weren't paying their own way.

I'm more than down w/ 2 WR's.  Actually think we need exactly that number IMO.  As for DT, I'm assuming everyone here is referring to NT which I think is a dire need as well, but would be happy w/ 1-2.

We have too many question marks with the DT's on the current roster after Martin leaves.  Plus, I think all great defenses start with having a great defensive line.  We should be covered on the ends for a while, but I'd feel even greater about this class if we can get two guys like O'Brien and Pipkins.

We have three defensive line coaches on staff, past or present, two of whom happen to be named Hoke and Mattison. I agree with your statement, but I also have to assume Hoke and Co. know and agree with this opinion, are aware of their situation, and are planning accordingly. God does not play dice with the universe. Hoke does not play dice with the defensive line. Just an opinion.

Will be fun to see how the class finishes. Assuming we're taking at least 1 each of WR,OL,DE and DT, that leaves us with only 2 openings assume Hoke still wants 26. A lot of us would want 2 WR and/or DT's but taking both would leave no room for a guy like Dunn. As far as problems go, these are good ones to have.

I don't  think Dunn is such a long-shot.  We lead for his cousin D Thomas; He is friends with Kalis; we have a favorable depth chart; he is visiting again for the BBQ; the punishment to OSU despite the lack of spine by the NCAA will likely include a bowl-ban which is key for Dunn.

While OSU's chances are still high, there is serious interest on Dunn's part and reading the atmospherics, it is pretty clear that we are "gaining groud."

When you say favorable depth chart, do you mean we don't have an elite/established RB? Cause we have 7 RBs on the roster, with only Shaw graduating (unless Cox doesn't come back). 6 RB's for 1 spot (2ish depending on how the reps get split up) isn't a favorable depth chart, especially with 2 RBs in the class before him.

The coaching situation is also a wild card.  Do any of us really expect Fickell to be there 2 or 3 years from now?  Will they be able to get a top-tier guy to take his place or be stuck with a less-than-ideal candidate?  The coaching situation for anyone thinking of committing to Ohio is totally up in the air.  They have no idea what they're walking into in that respect, or who their coach will be long-term.

instead of 2 WRs.  Next year will be a lot easier to recruit top notch receivers with Shane in the fold.  Thompson would still be nice, as well.  He and Morris have a "thing" going with each other in the G Kings.

Yeah, they were really in sync during that 7 on 7 championship, some of Morris' best completions were to him. But apparently there are some "rumors" about him or something. I haven't heard anything, so I would be more than happy with him as a second WR commit, even if he served as more of a receiving TE.

I think he was expecting something along the lines of the numerous post/during visit updates that Tom has givien. The ones where the recruit is quoted as saying " I really ______ Michigan, because of _______. The ________ was great and I really feel _________ about the coaches."
