Teams Outside the Big Ten that You Can't Stand

Submitted by Seth9 on
Following up on this thread ( http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/big-10-team-you-cant-stand ), I'm going to ask which teams outside the Big Ten you can't stand. And please don't say Notre Dame, because we already know that. For my part, here's a list (in no particular order): USC Florida Florida State Miami (FL) Oregon Any Remaining Florida-based team Tennessee Tennessee USC Oregon USC Duke (Basketball) The Big East (Basketball) South Carolina Alabama Oklahoma Oregon USC Florida Nebraska USC Note: If you didn't figure it out, the repeats are for emphasis

I was there for both of those games and the game against Texas. The Texas game hurt the worst because the game "losing" kick was right in front of me and I saw one of our defenders getting the tip of his finger on the ball. It's a game of inches. Teams I hate: Texas USC Florida (Meyers' whining denied us the 2nd whack at the buckeyes in 2006)

You can't just hate people cause they're good. Sure, I wish USC would stop getting all the 5 star recruits and waxing the Big10 in the Rose Bowl every year, but if they sucked would I still hate them? I didn't hate them when I was in college in the 90s. My Least Favs: 1.) Notre Dame - Because they think that their tradition is more impressive than ours, they are religious nutballs and I am forced to watch them on NBC even when they suck. 2.) FSU - That "oooooohhh ooooo oooohhhoohhhhh" cheer that they do gets repeated over and over and over and over no matter what's happening in the game and it makes it nearly unbearable for me to watch. 3. Texas - I hate them because if they monopolize Texas we are all screwed. A big reason I cheer for Oklahoma actually.

Massive NCAA violations that they get away with (outside of Basketball) Massive amounts of arrogance Pete Carroll Reggie Bush Playing their annoying fight song after every half-decent play. Lauding every Rose Bowl win as total proof of their superiority to the Big Ten while ignoring the fact that they're playing a virtual home game and that their opponent last played before Thanksgiving while they conclude their season in December. I think that there's enough reason to hate them outside of the fact their good.

Prove it. Despite the fact that it has all been buried thanks to Bush's settlement, all proof of cheating actually points to a dirty player (Bush), not a dirty program. Do you really expect Pete Carroll to control the lives of his player's families outside of the program? It would only be dirty if SC knew and did nothing about it.
Massive amounts of arrogance
I'll give you this one, but really when you are that good I think you have earned a little leeway.
Pete Carroll
Seriously? Pete Carroll is one of the nicest and coolest guys you could meet. I know. I have met him and he is awesome. I would hang out with that guy.
Reggie Bush
Okay. Fair enough. He is a cheater. Also see above.
Playing their annoying fight song after every half-decent play.
"Hello pot? Yeah this is the kettle. You're black."
Lauding every Rose Bowl win as total proof of their superiority to the Big Ten while ignoring the fact that they're playing a virtual home game and that their opponent last played before Thanksgiving while they conclude their season in December.
The media does that. Not USC. It's cool if you hate USC. I'm certainly not saying it isn't. When I tell people I am an alum I can literally hear them groan inwardly. Do you think, maybe, just maybe a little bit of your hatred comes from jealousy. Again, I don't mind that you hate them. If I didn't love them, I know I would hate them too. There is no gray area for a team like USC. But seriously, those are some of the worst reasons outside of the whole Bush thing I have ever heard.

You also forgot to mention the steroid rumors that have swirled around the program for years, coming during the combine last year. In the words of Terrell Owens: "Sometimes, when it smells like a rat, and looks like a rat...it's a rat." Maybe when the Free Press goes out of business Rosenberg can try his luck out in LA??

I'll admit it: I cannot definitively prove that USC has committed any violations other than the ones that have been successfully divulged (i.e. Tim Floyd). On the other hand, the most important teams at USC, football and basketball, have both almost undoubtedly committed major NCAA violations in the Bush and Mayo cases. The Mayo case is the most disturbing because Floyd was actively involved. I feel that the violation committed there is worthy of at least stripping a significant number of scholarships from USC basketball (no postseason ban though, that would be wrong). Meanwhile, the Bush case is also partially the fault of USC. I do not blame the school for Bush's actions specifically. They were his choices and nobody directly involved worked at the school. However, Carroll, or at least the compliance officers, had a duty to stop or catch Bush when he was taking an amount that may have reached into six figures is an abysmal oversight on the part of the compliance office. It indicates, at the very least, that the USC compliance officials and coaching staff was at the very least, apathetic towards policing their top football players when it comes to NCAA regulations. I give a measure of fault to Pete Carroll here, just as I give a measure of fault to Steve Fisher for the Michigan basketball violations. And the obvious laxness on the part of USC with regard to enforcing regulations allows for the distinct possibility that other players received illicit benefits as well. It does not point to an upstanding program (re: why I don't like Pete Carroll). As to the fight song, I just don't like it. It's not as bad as Notre Dame and Florida State (the king of annoying, stupid, aggravating fight songs), but it still drives me nuts. As for the Rose Bowl victories, I have endured several friends who are USC fans putting those up in my face. Mind you, the people I'm talking about are typically bandwagon fans when it comes to pro-sports (i.e. they're unreliable), so I doubt they're representative of the core of USC fans. I'll drop that last point if I meet some who are kind enough to admit that they have an inherent major advantage in the Rose Bowl. That said, the only thing I really appreciate about USC is the mascot (and why is the Trojan running around in the Coliseum; it seems kind of stupid unless there is an intentional allusion to the Aeneid here, which I rather doubt).

Just as a point of fact before I proceed, I am most definitely not defending Tim Floyd and the basketball program. That guy is guilty, so is Mayo and everyone involved deserves whatever they get. I guess it is a question of culpability vs ignorance. I would indict someone for the latter, but merely frown at the former. If Pete knew about the transgressions (which I doubt) then he is as guilty or worse than Bush because he knew the ramifications on the program. I fail to see where compliance officers or PC can truly investigate or police Bush's personal life. From all that I have read it seems Bush kept himself well distanced from those in the athletic department that would put a stop to it all. I am less inclined to point fingers at Carroll just as I don't fault Tressel for Troy Smith's greasy palm. Granted the weight and scope of the two situations are vastly different, but I still feel that policing every point of an athlete's life is simply impossible, especially when it involves the immediate family that lives in an entirely different city. As it is I think athletic departments do a pretty good job of keeping kids in line as a whole throughout the NCAA. It is no surprise to me that as soon as a lot of these kids leave the confines of the campus for the NFL and the reins are removed they get into all sorts of trouble. To the fight songs. I have always felt Michigan has the best fight song in college and that USC is a distant second. Both, however are played far too frequently and I can understand how anyone not rooting for either team would hate both of those fight songs. As for Notre Dame, their fight song has always been a pitiful ripoff of Michigan's, similar to their scaled down version of the stadium. I think we can pretty much agree everything associated with Notre Dame sucks. As far as USC fans go, there are a few types. 1) The alumni-almost universally die hard there for the good times and bad 2) The LA fan-they just need a football team to root for and will drop USC as soon as they go through another period of decline they have done it with the Raiders (2x) and Rams prior to this 3) The bandwagon fan-There are a ton of these all over from Chula Vista to Redding and beyond California for that matter The majority of fans are encapsulated in 2 and 3. I would guess your friends fall under the third category and for that I am sorry. They are the most difficult to deal with and quite frankly the most annoying as well. I would hazard a guess that most have never been to a game and most couldn't tell you a single member of either O or D line. They will root anyway because ESPN tells them too. Your point about USC's Rose Bowl advantage is valid, if not as convincing as some would like. I have attended multiple rose bowls in my life (92, 93, 04, 06, 07, 08, 09). Five of those USC participated in and four Michigan played in, they played each other in two. I have always been impressed how much Maize and Blue was at all games involving the Wolverines. For that matter most of those games had a pretty large contingent of traveling fans, especially Texas those Goddamn bastards. I will concede that USC has an advantage with where it is played, but just not as great as people like to make it out to be. Quick edit: Just so you know I'm not the one who negged for the previous points, disagreements aside you make valid points.

Seth9

Fair enough, I'll agree to disagree. As far as the negging goes, I haven't been negging you either. I know that it would be unfair to expect a USC fan to understand their program's evil ways (just kidding). You made valid and intelligent counter-arguments to my points and for that I'll give you a +1. Anyway, whoever has been negging me for this is probably the person(s) that has been doing so in bunches at 1:45 in the morning or some other ridiculous time (for some reason, people have been negging me for posts several weeks ago).

Clemson. Even more than Florida State, which is saying something. I'm married to a Terp so they get no hate from me. And my mother raised me to despise Alabama and I have yet to see anything to suggest that she was wrong. Texas was second place on her hatred list, so I kind of carry a grudge on her behalf, but they actually seem like the Michigan of the South so I can't get too worked up about them.

Funny you say that, my grandma always disliked Clemson for whatever reason. (She was incapable of actual hate.) I don't know what it was. Clemson's always been kinda the Wisconsin of the ACC to me: marginally dislikable, but for no one apparent reason. The all-purple uniforms are a pretty good start, though. As for Maryland, a Virginia grad married to a Maryland grad, that may be unique. I try to say this in the least disparaging way possible toward your wife, who I'm sure is good people. But I've never, ever had a good experience when dealing with Maryland fans. I too was raised by my mother to hate certain teams: Oklahoma, Texas A&M, and Arkansas. Guess which school she went to ;) The one time I ever met any Arkansas fans they were nice folks, but when I described Maryland fans to her she said that was basically Arkansas.

therefore the associated team. So, any Bill Snyder-coached squad is on my list. I also enjoy Bobby Petrino, Rick Neuheisal, and Dennis Erickson face plants ... Phil Fulmer used to be atop this list, but the dude's gone and my Tennessee hate (even with the annoying Lil' Kif at the helm) has faded.

Miami. Thuggish, frequently corrupt program with no fans and no history before the '80s, but it wins (when not recovering from probation) because it sits on a goldmine of local talent. I find the other two Florida schools just slightly more tolerable.

The only teams I "hate" are USC, Notre Dame, and 'Bama. I dislike a lot of teams, but don't really hate them. I hate Tim Tebow, but I don't hate the Gators program on a whole. I hate Lane Kiffin, but I don't hate the Vols. I do really, really hate USC though. Saban has made me hate Alabama. The SEC needed a representative. ND is a given. I don't get the Oregon hate. They've beaten us a couple times recently, but I like them for some reason. Maybe it's the facilities. They're unbelievable. Also, I went to HS w/ little Tajaun Porter [the freshman PG who hit like 1368769246 3s in the tourney a few years back] and it was awesome to see him do well there. Other sports: Basketball - Duke Hockey (outside of CCHA) - Boston University, North Dakota, Minnesota

for one, don't care for any team coached by Steve Spurrier, past or present, Florida State, Miami (that Miami) Texas A&M, Nebraska.... I think that covers it.

Hated that Meyer cried like a baby after we lost to the Bucks in '06 about not getting a shot. I used to hate Nebraska because of 1997 but it has faded somewhat since they have sucked ass for a while. Penance is Bill Callahan! And of course the Domers.

My top (bottom) three: 1. Notre Dame: couldn't stand them before Charlie Weis, now it's personal. I swear I saw Charlie look at the leprechaun during the MSU game and say "get into my belly!" 2. Florida: I actually liked Spurrier; the Ol' Ball Coach would use all of his timeouts and try to score 70 on Tennessee. But now with Urban Meyer, they are way beyond obnoxious. He has basically showed that he can win BCS championships with Zook's hired hands. Tebow is like Dobie Gillis on steroids. 3. Oklahoma: Two words. Bob Stoops. If there is a more massive asshole anywhere, I haven't found it. Is notable for losing both the Big Game and the Easy One. Some have said they don't like USC and/or Pete Carroll. Let's face it: who wouldn't want to be Pete? You don't have to recruit, you are more like the guy at the deli asking five stars to "Take a Number." But better than that, right outside your office window these fine young coeds are going through their paces: http://sait.usc.edu/recsports/spirit/song/thesquad/thesquad.html (Word has it that he's partial to the tall one in the middle).

USC: Something about Pete Carroll makes me want to punch him in the face. Notre Dame: Obvs. Va Tech: Unexplainable visceral loathing. Florida: Still annoyed about 2006. Florida State: Just cuz. And fuck that fake Indian chant shit. And I don't particularly hate Oklahoma per se, but their games are unwatchable because of "Boomer Sooner" after every fucking play.

USC. Don't tell me I'm not allowed to resent the time-old tradition of Michigan getting waxed by them in Pasadena. Because I do, damnit. I'm torn on Texas, because I actually think Mack Brown is a decent guy, but then I see Matthew McConaghey on their sidelines and I just don't know.

App state, Oregon (hate the uni's), Toledo, and Albion COllege because their coach wheres an ugly purple turtleneck sweater on recruiting visits (I went to Adrian because of that sweater). And, although breaking the rules, I have to still choose a big ten school and choose Sparty. I know so many State fans that are so insanely obsessed with Michigan failing that they never enjoy the small/brief moments in time when their team does well. They enjoyed App state more that any MSU victory in history. The chip on their shoulder bugs me which leads me to think I have a chip of my own that I need to figure out some day. Whatever: Go Blue, and Sparty on into mediocrity MSU.

1) Duke Basketball 2) USC Football 3) Norm Roberts era St. John's Basketball. 3 is more of a personal battle of love/hate. I'm not holding my breath for the Johnnies to round out top 3 finishes in the loaded Big East, but how is it possible Norm Roberts is our best case scenario on a team that plays at MSG? I pray for the return of the Red Men.

I don't hate the teams in general but there are things surrounding these programs. All SEC for the arrogance. I know they have been good but the fans and coaches just seep arrogance out! Florida State "Criminoles" because no matter how many players get arrested Bowden never does anything wrong! Stanford mascot. Not the team per say but something about that damn tree creeps me out!
