I'm jealous.
That sounds like a transactional experience
If only kids could get a cheaper, transformational experience somewhere....
It'll be interesting to me to see whether this more transactional approach to recruiting will have impacts--less of a team-first attitude--that show up on the field. (If it doesn't we are in big trouble.)
The transactional approach has been winning championships for a long time. This will just make the gap even bigger. Which National Championship teams of the last 20 years do you think were just a bunch of unpaid recruits who got along really well and gelled on the field well enough to win it all? Bama? LSU? Clemson? Ohio State? Florida? Auburn? etc, etc etc ...
AMEN! Sorry I only have but upvote to give here
Yeah this, bag men turned NIL men. NIL is leveling the playing field in as much as making the payments easier and public for the schools have already been paying players. Don't need to keep it behind closed doors, just ask for the money and have someone pay it.
I agree with you that the transactional approach has been winning championships for a long time. But I think NIL takes it to another level. And add in the transfer portal, which hasn't been around a long time, and I think you might see some effects.
Dude it definitely will. Some guys are gonna has issues with school, practice, playing time and other teammates period, throw money in that mix and we will see some explosive stuff happening at these pay for play schools.
Money has been in the mix for decades. Some won't be able to stay focused, others will be laser focused on getting to the NFL. There will be teams with high NIL spends who suck, just like there have always been teams with top-ranked classes who suck. But there will also be absolute powerhouses who have huge NIL packages to pair with competent coaching. It's not that much different than before -- it's just the money is easier to get in recruits hands now.
This thought that legal money will send teams into dysfunction is ridiculous. Some guys are actually disciplined and focused. Just like how some guys get their rookie NFL money and fall apart and some guys get a rookie deal and work their ass off for the next deal. And some guys just genuinely love football, and money is just a bonus. It's not like Alabama and Georgia are falling off the mountaintop bc one player makes $5MM and another guy only gets $5,000.
You are leaving out a massive difference between today and yesterday and today and the NFL...
Transfer portal
No high dollar league has free agency and NO contractual obligations from day 0.
It's an insane concept.
That line feels so much like every salesperson that doesn't have price flexibility: "Your customers don't care about the money, they care about the experience!" No, they care about the money.
Michigan is offering recruits, as part of their NIL, the ability to park an RV at Pioneer.
Shit….We’ve had season tickets for decades and can’t park there.
I’m like a transformed ticket holder.
You might have lost touch with reality if you don't think $1M is transformational.
Is there no functional difference between transformational & transactional experiences then?
I actually support Michigan's somewhat over-cautious approach to the NIL process. Jared Wangler gave a great interview about his firm & UM's approach to getting players compensated for the use of their name, image & likeness.
The Michigan "brand" will not be compromised by short term bidding wars for players who seek only compensation, not transformation.
The $ will be there, with the ability to combine the players' short term experience playing for Michigan with the long term benefits of being associated with Michigan.
I think the '23 class will be hurt by UM being circumspect about NIL, but actually probably more so by Harbaugh's NFL pursuit & loss of the coordinators.
But we all talk about these kids short term memory & lack of interest in the past - by '24 they won't remember JH tried to bolt for the vikings, they'll just remember how the team played in '21 & '22 - so '22 better be good!
Not sure what the first part of that meant. Are recruits who sign going to be paid a marketable value for their services or is this more of that slick talk used for decades to induce without real substance? Remember the NCAA and these major college programs have ran a multi billion dollar minor league for decades on the backs of poor kids and cheap labor.
TAM built their top recruiting class through NIL bucks. It this type of word on the street that will cause those Universities that sit out on NIL not getting much talent.
Seniors won't be going to the NFL; they'll have enough to retire and start a Tiktok following.
He forgot to add: "But you'll still have to live in College Station."
With all the money people are throwing at his team, Jimbo sure as hell better win some football games. Otherwise he's not going to last long.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but I hope A&M gets stomped by an angry-assed Saban and then they go on to lost 2-3 more games.
College Station is actually really nice and doesn't lack for much if you include Bryan. It's a hassle to get to, that part definitely sucks. Cost of living is super low, though, so those NIL bucks go a long way.
Yeah, I was just being snarky. I spent four years there for grad school and found it to be a decent place. I went back a few years ago and barely recognized the town. It's grown a lot.
I guess one thing I couldn't deal with was the Aggie 'spirit'. "Howdy," "Whoop," "Gig 'Em," or being yelled at to "Uncover" or "Off the Grass" (how the fuck am I supposed to know) was just too damn much for me. And I experienced some pretty shitty stuff one night at the Dixie Chicken, but that was my fault for going there in the first place.
Totally fair, and I'm assuming that the football players mostly live in their bubble and aren't spending a ton of time at yell practice or likewise. Really anything Corps of Cadets related. That's where most of the really weird stuff resides.
(I was also there for grad school, and I lived really, really well on a $1500/mo stipend 10-15 years ago. I think if you made a Venn diagram of colleges with big time athletics and cost of living that low, it would be a very small overlap. That colors my thinking a lot I'm sure.)
four years there for grad school
"I hope this guy who relies on honest, old-fashioned bagmen just destroys these upstart NILionaires."
It was a mistake to permit athletic scholarships and every subsequent step towards the professionalization of college sports.
We'll need to dig up Ralph Aigler, Fielding Yost, and Fritz Crisler to have this error corrected.

Underrated comment.
You can look at it that way and that's fine.
But A&M crushing everyone including Alabama with their inducement vault might be a better play on getting NIL fixed or sorted out sooner rather than later.
I don't have a horse in the race...just looking at exposing everyones conundrum.
At this point I'm fine with burning down the whole village in order to save its soul.
That soul has been corrupt for a long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long,
...are you still listening....
long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long, long, long long,
time.
whoa ... wait .... how long?
I agree with Deer Hunter. In some places, the money will be thrown around like a sailor on shore leave. Then, when the team/coach don't excel, that money will dry up. It could self-correct in that way, or the donors cross the line and put the University in hot water so that a correction is forced on the NIL.
Seems to be working, maybe we should try it.
Seems like it's that simple, too. If A&M can turn on the water faucet that quickly, then I would guess so can any school with both a large alum base and a large fan base.
If only Michigan had a bunch of wealthy, business savvy, football-loving, creative donors .......... if only
Pretty effective pitch. Kids work their whole high school career to play the game and be in this position. If super rich people want to pay them to come play and it is legal then they should go to the place that will pay them.
The vast majority of these kids will not play in the league. This may very well be their only chance to financially benefit from athletics.
It is crazy that some of these kids will be set for life but still be a complete bust at the college level.
This is against the rules, right?
I think part of the issue is there really are no rules. If they can get paid on the front end they should. How many times do we get excited about a recruit and never hear from him again until he enters the transfer portal? Happens frequently, there is no sure thing that the recruit will do well and get big NIL money after he signs. I hate it for the sport, but I stand by these kids getting as much as they can as soon as they can.
I don't think so? He didn't say they were getting paid now (as recruits). He said IF you come play here, the boosters will pay you. I don't see anything wrong with this under the current rules (admittedly I'm no expert).
Actually the toothless ncaa has said nil cannot be used as an inducement to sign with a particular school. That's about all they're saying about it, because they have finally realized that the more times they end up in court, the less power they'll have!
State laws govern the rest of it. Michigan's is stricter than Texas for example.
UM has decided to not even reach the limits that Michigan state law allows, while msu is pushing it to what they perceive to be the limits of the law.
This was taken completely out of context and what was said doesn’t mean what it sounds like it means.
signed Jimbo
We all know exactly what this is referring to.
However, easy lawyer spin -- 'He was referring to all the money the people in the suites spend on tickets, concessions, merchandise, which helps fund TAMU athletics, and the money INDIRECTLY benefits the players in the form of contributions to the general athletic fund.'
Considering an FBI investigation is not enough to cause punishment to schools anymore, this video does little to change anything.
The blame, as usual, goes on the people that are always willing to cheat to win.
Can't really blame the kids for taking the cash. If no one (NCAA) is going to enforce the rules, they aren't doing anything illegal.
Chafes me to no end that our basketball program got sent to purgatory for 15+ years because someone who are barely even a booster of our program gave kids a fraction of what schools are buying them with now, but that is the problem of trying to be ethical in the sea of deceit and lies that is college athletics.
Hang the banners
You'd have to get paid a premium to go to this school...
It's a diseas, but let's be honest. Four-fifths of the posters here just want in. Don't give a damn about the ethics, the academics, the venality, the de-evolutionary features of a pathetic ritual like this; they just want to be in the game, there with their eyeballs for every commercial, every delay, every minute. Happily, they won't decide. And that's okay, too, because complaining bitterly and taking it all personally, and spending your life doing it is what much of this country is now reduced to. Doesn't even much matter about what; latch on somewhere and hold on.
wtf is with the hitch in his step while he chops his own elbow?
i would walk out as soon as this started
Very Cringy. I was uncomfortable watching it, could not imagine being there in person.
