Superstition, Rituals and Magical Thinking

I will be wearing my “lucky” M clothing, hat and shoes to watch the game tonight. Backup gear will be available if needed because it’s obvious that the team is aware of my sartorial choices and it helps them to play well. What are your ways of helping Michigan win?

2018 It’s great to be a Michigan Wolverine season T.   It wasnt visible but under a couple of layers against OSU and I wore watching against Iowa at home.   I put it on an hour ago!

I have a Michigan Engineering T I wore watching MSU and when I went to Chapel Hill for the basketball game.    It’s been retired.

GO BLUE!!!

It is proven fact that if I watch the game -- or even check the score -- Michigan plays badly.  Therefore, I will abstain from the game in all forms.  It's not rational, it's not even reasonable.  But there it is.

Back in 2016, I stayed away from the Ohio State game -- no TV, no radio, no checking scores.  At a time when I was sure the game was over, I went online to check the score.  It was in OT.  Michigan then lost the game.  I learned my lesson: 3:45 is not enough time to wait; 4 hours is better; 4+ hours better still.

I used to think that, too, and didn't watch games and even stopped going to games because we seemed to lose all the ones I was at in person. I did the same watching my son pitch in high school and college and missed so many games and outings because I thought he pitched better when I didn't watch. I would literally leave a game when he came in. His team played in the NCAA regionals last year and he didn't tell us he was starting so we drove home. But somehow, 30 minutes into the drive, we figured it out. I wouldn't even let my husband watch the game on his phone (you could stream it). I let him check every 15 minutes and the only thing he could tell me was if he was still in. Finally, 3 hours later (!!!!), my husband said, "Game's over," and only then did I let him tell me the outcome and how my son pitched. I admit I am THE craziest fan out there with this. I'm going to the game tonight and I'm really having anxiety about it and my being there and whether it will affect the outcome. I again admit I am THE craziest fan out there. Don in AZ, we're just not that powerful or important.

Your mojo is strong today, my friend.  Go forth and do good! And Go Blue!

(The other night I was at the Minnesota/WVU game in Phoenix.  A few rows down from me was a guy in a Georgia sweatshirt.  Before the game I yelled out to him: "Hey Georgia Guy!"  He looked, and I yelled again:  "GO BLUE!" He smiled; I smiled; it was all good.)

While wearing Michigan gear today, of course, I have never been given to such thinking - I was raised in a home where it was made quite clear that such thinking is utter codswallop, and I have naturally passed that to my children. We are all decked out in maize and blue all the same, of course, even my wife

you know you are a serious fan when your children could get 'processed' if they don't put on their game day uniform.

daughter pioneer:  but daddy, i already have my pink pony sweatshirt on and i like it

pioneer:  sweetheart, you don't have to put on your michigan gear, its just that if you don't you might have to go somewhere else to finish grade school...

I've written down, "I am so happy, grateful, and certain now that Michigan has beaten Georgia. Thank-you, Thank-you, Thank-you."   I'm also visualizing and feeling a Michigan victory. Imagining feeling good and happy that Michigan has won. I started doing this for Indiana, and have kept it going.

Wearing the maize and blue tie I wore to this wedding during the osu game’s first half, which I then wore under my sweatshirt during the B1G title game. In Santa Teresa, Costa Rica for NYE and will be wearing the same tie, likely shirtless, watching from either a White Lotus-esque hotel bar or an iPad Pro.

Go Blue.

Pretty much the same.  Shorts, hat, t-shirt, & hoodie that I’ve worn through the entirety of every win this season.  Regrettably I got too warm during the MSU game and took off the hoodie and hat during the 4th quarter.  I apologize and won’t let it happen again.

Also, shaved my (admittedly not too full) beard the morning of the OSU game.  It was also accidental as I was trying to just trim it but ended up trimming much too close and decided to just take it all off.  Shaved as well the following Saturday before heading downtown to the stadium in Indy.  I will be showering and shaving probably around halftime of the UC game today to make sure it’s as clean shaven as possible at kickoff.

I will be wearing my Maize Block M t-shirt. I bought it the summer I was admitted and wore it to all the home games I attended while there. I generally wear it for all the big games I watch on the teevee now.

If we take the L and I later find out any of you bastards changed up your routine or what you wore for OSU and Iowa, there's gonna be trouble. Big trouble.

For you.

After the MSU game I decided to stop shaving for the first time in my adult life (i'm mid 30's). The beard is a bit stringy on the cheeks, but the team has won every game since.

Going to go rub the frames of the two diplomas, father and son, awarded from M. Of course, the kid's GPA was higher than mine, which is the way it's supposed to be. Wife will sit on our couch and wear her M sweatpants for the game. This should be good for at least 28 good guy points, the rest is up to the coaches and players to figure out; we can't do it all.

I watched the OSU game at my sister’s with TVs on in two different rooms. One was delayed so I got to race back and forth to see replays and skip the waiting between plays. Rearranged the living room in my house so I will recreate the experience here.

And I’ve got my father-in-law’s urn set up with a prime viewing spot for extra good luck.

I've been listening to Pump It Up nonstop and I don't even think it's a superstition; it's our secret weapon. After five or six reps, I'm ready to block some fool into the turf.

I’m sorry to report that I forgot that I can’t wear my Michigan hat on game day. However, I still have the lucky Halloween skeletons on the house wearing their Michigan ball caps.

I will be wearing my #1 Jordan jersey. It's the only thing I have worn this season, outside of the MSU game. For that one I was at work in my scrubs.

The #98 Adidas jersey and my fav M sweatshirt have bad juju.

My personal mantra this season has been enter each game with 0 expectations. I intend to do the same.

Side note: has anyone noticed the amount of downvotes anyone receives that isn’t 100% confident, or offers a differing opinion? I love the optimism, but I hope we don’t turn into the echo chambers or deniers of intelligence.

I went to a friends house for the Washington game.  Didn't have a drop of alcohol.  Tonight I will be at a friend of the girlfriend's place.  Since it is technically not my friend, I will be drinking as every single game that I have drank (namely OSU, Northwestern, and Iowa) we have won handily.  I will NOT be wearing anything Michigan as the only times I have worn Michigan stuff is when I'm at a public place watching the game.  Even at home I have not worn one single piece of UM clothing during any games; didn't wear anything at my friend's place either.  I will NOT get excited at any point at all no matter what is happening as the only game I really got hyped for we lost (I even watched my Braves in game six sitting back, arms folded, not muttering a word or cracking a smile).  Yes, I am pulling out all the stops to send any good vibes to our dudes in Miami.

Michigan is 12-0 if I eat at Jersey Mike's on a game day.  We are 0-1 when I don't.

I think superstitions are dumb and I am tired, but I am likely to go eat a sub and get a Mountain Dew around halftime of the Bama Cincinnati game.
