Stay Classy, Ohio State (McMurphy shares e-mail)

Submitted by MaizeBlueA2 on October 5th, 2021 at 9:04 PM

On my phone so I can't embed the tweet, but someone else can do it if they wish.

Basically, Brett McMurphy of the Action Network (formerly of ESPN), shared an e-mail he received from an Ohio State fan after releasing his bowl projections. Clearly the fan did not agree.

Every fanbase has it's nut (pun intended), but I was going back and forth with someone the other day who was holding OSU fans in really high esteem, when in reality, this type of stuff is far more common with that fanbase than most other non-SEC fanbases around the country.

Nonetheless, it was a nice laugh on a Tuesday.

I am not an English major...

Twitter isn't exactly known for it's strict adherence to the fundamental rules  of sound grammar, but this gem does approaches a new language.

His capitalization of proper names is quite random. He says Ohio state and penn state but gets Michigan correct, as a sign of respect, certainly.

"When Ohio state hammers penn state and Michigan will you take a take a gun and stick it in your ignorant pie hole."

I'm pretty sure that needs a question mark. I'm also not a little confused as to why Mr. McMurphy should put a firearm in his mouth.

There is no fucking way you should have a job in the public.

So because Brett didn't pick OSU he can't get a job as a barista or concierge?

"--- every year your WRONG!!"

That is indeed the WRONG!! use of 'your'.

I bet you suck a mean cock as well.

Not if he already has a gun in his mouth.

And I would bet everything that's all the guy is, a fan.  I live down here and 95% of the alums are respectful of the rivalry and while they'll give Michigan fans shit, it's almost always good natured.

The guys like this idiot i assure you never attended a class at OSU and probably would struggle to find Columbus on a map.  And the angriest one's are always the dudes you can immediately tell probably didnt graduate from high school, much less a university.

Whenever I encounter one of the OSU honk knuckle-draggers my standard line is "I graduated from Michigan in 1981, what years were you are Ohio State?" and the response is ALWAYS a blank stare and then "I didnt go there."

Because he didn't go to OSU that means he can't be a fan, or can't aspire to name his kid after someone he respects?  Why is it that you think you have the moral high ground to be a fan just because you went to school there?  Is nobody allowed to have life experiences with the program if they didn't actually go to school there?

I will readily admit that the worst 10% (likely more) of any school's fanbase is made up of non-alums (most of whom probably scraped through high school by the skin of their rotted teeth).  But the occasional moralizing about being a 'better' fan just because you're an alum is bullshit.  Always has been, always will be...

I have lived in Ohio for over 30 years so I have 30 years of first-hand experience in dealing with them.  And if you read several comments below from our OSU friends here on the blog they all 100% agree with me that the ultra-nut job OSU "fans", the angry ones, are NEVER alumni.

It's funny - both you and Salvadore Quatro ALWAYS get hyper-sensitive when this subject comes up - like if I or anyone points out that the nutters down here in Ohio arent OSU alums it someone means that I think that non-Michigan alums are "lesser" fans.  And for the record I absolutely do not feel that way nor is my point in anyway directed at non-Michigan alums.  It's 100% directed at the angry, sometimes violent, non-OSU alums who react very, very differently to a guy wearing a Michigan jacket than the alums generally do.

And exactly where in my post do I "moralize I'm a better fan"?  I stated the rebuttal I give to the idiots here who basically want to fight you if they see you wearing Michigan gear.  How on earth does that escalate to some sort of moral high ground on my fandom?

I dont expect either of you guys to get it - neither of you live here.

Settle down, Francis...  My reply was to VikingDiet - who made light of some guy that named his kid after a star player (for whatever reason) only because that guy hadn't gone to the star players school.

If you read my post for comprehension (which you didn't do because you thought I was replying to you), I tacitly agreed with you about the non-alums being the worst of the bunch.  I have no doubt what you're saying is true - I see it myself in every fanbase I recognize!

But dude, equating me with Salvatore?  Man, that's low...

Fans are what P5 programs size and wealth possible. Without them there is no major college football as there aren’t enough or interest among alums to sell out stadiums and for games to be broadcast.

UM has a large alumni base at around 600,000. A sizable portion of those people simple do not care about Michigan football. The only time they have even been in the stadiums was when they graduated.

Furthermore, aberrant behavior like this isn’t okay from anyone, alumni or otherwise. Alums *do* act like this. The underlining assumption that they don’t is…not correct.

Education doesn’t make anyone less extreme, emotional, or psychotic. They retain their antisocial habits throughout their matriculation.

"A sizable portion of those people simply do not care about Michigan football.", you state this like it's a fact. If it is factual, please support your claim. Michigan is one of those universities, like Harvard or Yale, whose alums are very proud graduates of the institution. They support their school and cheer its accomplishments. The football program is legendary; the winged helmets, the fight song, even the most book wormiest grads have some knowledge of the sport. A sizeable portion of the alumni base may not know what a sweep or a flea flicker is, but I would be surprised if this portion didn't care about the success of the football program, or at the very least acknowledged it.

Agree. I live in Columbus and most of my family and friends went to osu and honestly I don't know a single one who is crazy like that...or even in that ballpark. Even my neighbors who are insanely intense about osu are not even in that stratosphere. It's the weird non-alums.

+1 for your quest to improve reading comprehension!   And, I agree with your statement.  From my experience, many (not all) non-alums lack collegiality with respect to College Football.  By that, I mean that many (not all) non-alums are more likely to be more concerned about winning than sportsmanship, academics, and following the rules.

I am always relieved when Brett McMurphy posts something.  I'm comforted to know that he wasn't sent to the bottom of the Ohio River like that one lawyer who got Jim Tressel out at Ohio State.

Reminds me of the blog that made fun of OSU and had the fan harassing Herbstreit camped outside his house. It was obviously fiction but funny as hell and accurate none the less.
