The very first time I knew Jim Belushi even existed was when I was in HS and saw him perform as a member of the Second City troupe in Chicago. At the time he was “John’s younger brother.” I mean maybe he still is and ever will be. “Toga… toga.. toga…”

Warde is not likely making these decisions in a vacuum, but in consultation with Jim, Ohno, and a lot of other people. People who reflexively call for his head every time that he doesn't get angry at the NCAA probably need to develop a more supple world view. I've had my issues with u policy off and on for decades, but believe me, he talks things through with a lot of people--and obtains some consensus--before acting, if he wants to keep his job.

Unfortunately, always leaping to play by the books and come clean in a world where no one is clean doesn't always redound to Michigan's credit; we've seen that enough. But if that is the stance, it's not because Warde chose it by himself.

I cannot, for the life of me, understand Warde's/AD's approach to these issues. Why suspend now, rather than after an investigation has concluded. This suggests culpability before any investigation or findings have been reached. If Warde thinks self-flagellation will make Michigan's opponents happy, he's engaging in polyanna.

Absolutely correct. It is a judgment punishment--I.e., we don't have a basis for termination but want to disassociate. The question is why would Michigan do so now, when the eyes of the college football world are on it and when an NCAA decision/findings are months away? Seems to fuel the narrative and risk distracting players and team.

I would think it's more about caution at this point. If nobody, including Harbaugh, is aware of what was potentially happening, they're going to put the *possible* culprit on the sidelines until they get to the bottom of it, mostly for their own liability going forward from this point.

It's really not much different than when a cop gets pulled off duty after an officer involved shooting. There's an investigation into you ongoing, you haven't been found guilty of anything, but we also can't risk having you work while we figure it out.

I agree.  It's pretty common for employers to place someone on leave if they are under investigation whether they are "with pay" or "without pay" can often times be an indicator of the perceived level of trouble that person/company is in.

I think this is an appropriate step by Warde to give the appearance they are taking this seriously while at the same time not showing guilt.

I mean, if they don't do anything now and then something does come out you just add more fuel to the fire and, potentially, expose UM to further punishment.  The fact he's being paid leads me to believe they are more supportive of him than, say, when MSU suspended Mel Tucker without pay after the Tracy situation came to light.  I believe UM also suspended Matt Weiss without pay before he was fired.

I know this place hates Warde Manuel with a passion but I think it's probably good he's in this job and not a bunch of people (not saying you OP) on this site because otherwise UM would be an absolute shitshow the minute anything bad happened.

Warde bends the knee to the false god of Public Relations.

He does not ever play offense, only deflects from himself to make himself look good to the people he really wants to like him. None of those people are in the Michigan football program. And also, none of those people are ever going to like Warde Manuel either, they will just tolerate him.

He’s a low energy Michigan employee, plain and simple

Michigan has to suspend Stalions.  If it turns out that he was guilty and Michigan was still using him, then Michigan has no "we were unaware" defense.

It doesn't imply anything about a belief in guilt or innocence.  It just avoids the worst-case scenario  where Michigan had reason to believe his work might be tainted by then knowingly used it anyway.

There are two ways this is going to go, they are not at all similar and I think odds sit at about 60/40 right now.

1. This guy is really good at analyzing film and identifying tendencies and there is absolutely nothing here.

2. They have a shit load on this, it was real, and this is going to be very bad.

Nothing about this has made any sense, but that is based on the assumptions that there is something but it is "not very bad."  If you remove those two assumptions you are left with the two possibilities above and it makes a lot more sense either way.

"With pay" is actually a good development IMO.
