Spring Practice Starts Monday; Early Enrollees Include Cabana, Herring

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on February 18th, 2023 at 12:02 PM

The Back-to-Back Big Ten Champs are back! Spring practice starts on Monday, the first of 15 spring practices. The team will take off Feb. 25-March 6 for spring break and will then resume practices. The spring game is April 1.

Usually, the most interesting thing about spring football is getting a look at the incoming freshmen. According to Maize n Brew, the early enrollees include RB Cole Cabana, WR Amir Herring, CB Jyaire Hill, WR Semaj Morgan, EDGE Aymeric Koumba and others. FULL LIST HERE. Can't wait to see them in winged helmets, along with all our other old friends.

Hoping for good weather on April 1. GO BLUE!

I’m underwhelmed often with the WR play but am hoping last years super trio of Clemons Morris and Walker will up our game at the position and bring us to a higher level.

CJ is inconsistent and disappears for large stretches of time - Henning hasn’t come close to matching the recruiting hype and Wilson, though very talented just isn’t the go to guy every team needs when the game is on the line.

I think the 3 studs from the 22 class will be stealing snaps from CJ RW and AJ this season.

Shoutout to Joey Velazquez who is currently starting for the baseball team in Arizona for their 4 games in the MLB Desert Invitational. He'll come home, go through spring practice with the football team, then go back to the baseball team to finish out the season.

He will basically be "in season" for 10 straight months from August through at a minimum the back half of May (longer if the team somehow makes the NCAA tournament). It is incredibly impressive to be able to perform at a high level for that length of time, with no recovery season and in two separate sports no less.

The kind of player Cabana turns out to be might be one of keys to the 2024 team. Corum and Edwards will be gone and the other RBs, to this point, look ordinary. At least as an incoming freshman, he seems a bit small to be a heavy use back.

I'm glad both RB commits are enrolling early. I've seen nothing but complaints from people(including me) about Hall just due to his lower rating and he supposedly had a bad final season.

He's higher ranking than CJ Stokes, Hassan Haskins, and Karan Higdon. Similar in size to all 3, and Haskins/Higdon turned out great with Stokes showing potential. Hoping this kid proves us all wrong.

Not so sure DE will be gone. He needs to run tougher and improve his vision if he’s gonna make it in the NFL.

Corum will be gone as he should be - I’m pumped he has returned. CC is gonna impress as a freshman more than Stokes did in my opinion. And I don’t think we’ve heard the last from Tavi D.

Cabana, being from Dexter as I recall, probably took a route to campus which went near a couple of the things mentioned later in the local history thread from yesterday (i.e., the former site of the Ann Arbor Country Club, the Loch Alpine subdivision, that whole stretch of Huron River Drive, etc...), so these threads do interconnect in weird ways sometimes.

On a more relevant note, it will either be abnormally warm on April 1st or they'll need to dig out or unflood the field first. Spring is a hilarious time around here, as we know.

FYI - we already had 8 guys going through bowl practice, and 7 of them practiced with the team in Arizona.

  1. Herring
  2. Morgan
  3. Cabana
  4. Hall
  5. Hill
  6. Marshall
  7. Moore
  8. Calhoun

Only 6 weeks from end of '22 season, to start of '23 season with spring practice. Not much time for recovery/rehab in that short period. Followed by 6 weeks of spring practice, which I perceive to be an orientation for new coaches and players. It's also a time to learn about schematic changes, training-over-summer expectations, and season goals. If there many changes in the overall state of affairs, it's time to learn how much is not known, with time to improve for fall, in the formal resumption of the year-round business of football. Go Blue

I bet Cabana is going to be seeing more of Ben Herbert (and the nutritionists) than any other coach for the first few weeks. Load up your plate and take seconds, Cole.

People keep making comments like this as though Cabana is rail thin… but he’s coming in at 6’0” 190. Just 12 pounds off of Donovan Edwards’ freshman playing weight with both listed at the same height, and Edwards was listed at 5’11” 190 on his 247 recruiting profile.

It’s called McGuffie PTSD. Unique condition to Michigan fans. Symptoms include irrational fear of player getting injured and/or bobsledding. May cause spontaneous flipping. No known treatment has proven to be effective but symptoms seems to reduce with time and prolonged exposure to Haskins, Corum and Edwards when combined with Buckeye tears.

We don't really need him next year anyway...so even if he was light, he's not carrying the ball 20, 30 times a game.

Maybe he's a return guy, maybe he can become a 3rd down guy.

IMO, Henning should be most concerned...not because I think Cabana plays WR. But those slot reverses might go to Cole if AJ doesn't continue to elevate his game (which I expect him to do with a full offseason working with his buddy from Chicago).

Yeah I just don’t get the extra concern over his weight. I don’t see why he would need any more time with the nutritionist and S&C coach than any other incoming freshman would.

6’0” 190 isn’t a concern. Most of those early enrollees are naturally going to put on 5-10 pounds of muscle before the season starts

I'm really looking forward to seeing what Koumba will look like after a couple of years in the oven. Hopefully he'll rise up like a big beautiful soufflé.

Cool story bro. I played HS football with Cole Cabana’s uncle and my older brother got in a fight with Cole’s dad (they were both beasts back in the day) in mid 1990s. They are a good family and glad Cole went blue!  Cool story over.
