You serious?

What did you see in Isaac's carries last year that impressed you more than what you saw in Evans's? Ty should get carries if he's right with the coaches, but Evans looked like a legit star in the making last year.

I concur. He was third on the team in carries (74), but had just two more than Higdon (72). Isaac had just 12 total touches in the final six games of the year . . . for 106 yards, which is about 11 yards/touch.

In that same span, Higdon had 29 carries . . . for 66 yards, which is about 2.2 yards/touch.

It's true, Evans had some nice runs. Where was he against the bucss though? Or Iowa? He's talented yes but let's not make him out to be a star until he kicks everyones ass.

There are lots of good bits in the comments from umbig11 (dude in the know). Not gonna paste them here, but pointing it out for people to read as well.

We could be REALLY good. And your 5 seniors assumes Kugler starts. It could actually just be Hill, Cole, Hurst, and McCray. That's crazy. Crazy awesome for 2018. In 2019 we're Speight, Rashan Gary, and Tyree Kinnel away from returning just about everyone. I'm confident Peters will be just fine in 2 years, we have a kajillion options to replace Gary - not that level, but far from average in 2 years when these freshman are juniors. Kinnel will hurt because I think JKP starts with him next year and Metellus and Hudson both play Viper. I'm looking for a big time safety recruit in this class. That would be huge for 2018 and 2019.

One thing that needs changing, Dwumfour isn't out for spring.

I would be stunned if Newsome played a down this season, and I have some moderate concern that he may never quite get back to where he was at all (though I have no inside knowledge and would be delighted to be off-base).

My hope is that he is 100% in 2018, when we could see this talent really round into form with either a hot Peters or an absurdly seasoned Speight, a load of seasoned talent around him, a defense that has almost everybody back... and, finally, an offensive line that is ready to dominate. A healthy Newsome would be a 1-for-1 swap with a departing Cole, and everybody else will be a year better.

A lot can happen between now and then, but I'm excited for the young talent in 2017, and 2018 has the potential to be absolutely brilliant.

That's kinda my view too. I think that in terms of actual talent, this team has more talent than last year. But it's a matter of how much that youth and inexperience is going to hurt us. I think looking almost across the board you're going to see that the new starters have much higher upside. Guys like Chesson and Darboh who were very solid players, you have to see guys like DPJ and Crawford as upgrades in terms of raw talent. Or the Lewis-Stribling combo at CB, you have to feel like he combo of Hill/Long/Thomas has more upside.

Does not have the prototypical height for the tackle position, but he is a very good athlete. Don't forget he won all but one event in the spring combine. I can tell you with confidence that he is practicing at RT, and is an option because of his athleticism. Do not forget who his daddy is. If Jr has half the mean streak that Sr did then we could be in business. Ruiz is mos def in the convo to start at center. It's still early.

Magnus

April 4th, 2017 at 10:26 PM ^

You don't have to tell me about Runyan's athleticism. I've been on his bandwagon since I saw him last spring. I just don't think he's a tackle, and this is the first I've heard of him practicing there. FWIW, there are often guys who practice "out of position" in the spring just to fill holes. I'm not saying he's one of them, but that may be the case.

Magnus

April 4th, 2017 at 10:40 PM ^

There are too many potential moving parts there. I wouldn't say Runyan is automatically the next guy up. Ruiz is also a possibility at guard, and when I looked at top-rated centers over the years, many of them began their careers by playing guard, presumably because it's slightly easier to learn while they're raw.

Agree, the starting RT tackle may not be here yet. Ceasar is not like other C's. He is a 1 every 10 year type of player, and those are not my words. He does have a very good chance at starting there. The line that UMBig posted is right on, that is the first team right now, and I would say that C, and RT are still fluid.

The idea that the guy they're hoping to start at LT hasn't even taken a single practice snap is pretty terrifying, if you ask me. Means they absolutely have no confidence in any of the alternatives on the roster, and they're just crossing their fingers and hoping one of the incoming freshmen is good enough.
