Some degree of OT: Another name from the past.
I enjoyed reading the Biakabutuka hockey article that was posted here a short time ago. Around the same time (in an MGoBlog-infamous Detroit paper) I saw an article on the daughter of former Michigan safety Vada Murray (RIP). This one covers more of the family (including Vada):

Thanks for the post '74. Vada was a fine player and a better man.

Great article. Thanks for sharing it.
I remember running into Murray in his capacity as a member of the AAPD once, and I talked to him for a bit about watching those Rose Bowls as a kid and remembering plays that he made. He was very kind about the whole affair, some random asshole on the street remembering his days in Michigan football and all that.

You're not just some asshole, you're our asshole.

Ah, how many times my dear mother said those very words to me.
Looking back, it was a pretty strange way to send me off to kindergarten.

I watched Vada play in Bo's last game at Michigan Stadium - his win over the Buckeye's in 1989. Good to see his family is carrying his good name forward...

What a great person ! Didn’t Vada block/catch a late OSU field goal to win the game ?

Can't say for sure, but probably; He and Tripp Welborne (3) blocked so, so many XP and FG tries between 1987 and 1990

I was at that game as well and my memories are hazy so I looked it up (see here).
Vada did block a field goal, and Tripp Welbourne blocked an extra point. The critical plays of the game, though, were a pair of interceptions by former walk-on Todd Plate when Ohio State threatened in the fourth quarter.
It was a lot closer than it should have been thanks to a couple of first half fumbles in or near the red zone (including one by one of my other favorite players of the era, Leroy Hoard). Final score was Michigan, 28-18.

I was at that game too. I am glad the family is doing well. Nice article.

We I lived in a house on Benjamin, we had a wil party, and Vada came and had to break it up.

My daughter (soph JV player in SW MI) went to the volleyball game last night in Crisler. She was so excited to be there. A friend's cousin plays for Miss St so they took a vanload of players. They got to visit with the teams for a minute after the game on the floor. I'll have to show her this story. She'll get a kick out of it.
She was also pretty excited about seeing the basketball team out in the parking lot. She saw Jace and TWill and was looking for Hunter but didn't see him. I asked if she got a selfie, but she was too timid to ask for one. Next time.
