With the new speed on defense, specifically the d-line, perhaps Hermann could work. Honestly, I don't see how anyone could fuck up this defense.

when he was considered a genius. I'm not sure it would be a terrible hire. He had a bad 05 season, but then English had a bad 07 season. I find all the trashing a little ironic when the boards have been concerned about the loss of ties to the Bo era.

I don't think he's DEATH, I think he's a quality defensive coordinator and has the best resume of any guy we're in the running for. I think the problem is that it reeks of Rodriguez being directed to bring in more guys with Michigan ties.

I sort of doubt he'd be hired, but I'm not sure why people are convinced he's awful. He was here for 9 years, we had a bad defense maybe twice? 2000 and 2005?

but we still usually got lit up by QBs with the slightest mobility. Maybe we can assume that that won't happen when he gets to face a spread offense in practice every day, but I always felt like his defenses were very slow to adapt.

Judging by Troy Smith, Armanti Edwards (if that was his name?), Dennis Dixon, and Tyler Donovan I don't know if this was something Ron English figured out either.
As a matter of fact, the only time we bottled up a mobile QB in the past 20 years that pops into my mind was Terrelle Pryor this year.

I really think this is an issue of speed, not X's and O's philosophy. Stopping QBs like Pryor should continue...unless they all learn to play fake like Juice of 2008, then...um, shit.
Miami (FL) and Auburn are the only 2 schools I can think of that consistently stop a mobile QB out of the spread....and their S&C programs are predicated on speed, specifically with the d-line. In the case of Auburn, they went as far as to put in 199 lb guys at LB. Our incoming S/LB recruits appear to fit this philosophy.
Other top notch programs like LSU and USC still struggle with mobile QB's out of the spread...and, from what I've seen, I don't think they don't emphasize speed up front the way Michigan, Miami and Auburn do.

I thought Pryor had success running the ball with his few snaps that he had against USC. I also think Dennis Dixon owned their front 7 last year.
PSU...their QB wasn't threatening to run...he was dropping back and just launching it all over the field. Probably b/c they were playing from way far behind.
Oklahoma...I haven't seen them run a mobile QB from the spread.

I remember after the 2007 Rose Bowl Steve Sarkisian saying that speed is of the utmost importance when USC is looking at potential recruits. They also have one of the best S&C programs in America. The facts seem to be that a true dual threat QB will give ANY defense headaches. BTW, Miami's defense was absoluetly shredded by Georgia Tech this past season, so, they have their problems with mobile QBs as well.

if i remember correctly, one of the main reasons why the D played so bad in jims final few years was because they were confused with all of the shit that he was throwing at them. and he is not what we need at all. he likes that bend but don't break crap with few and far between blitzes. we need someone that is going to come in and use our athletes correctly and hold them back.

Tebow's a different sort of mobile QB. His rushing yards seem to come more on called runs than a guy like Dixon or Smith. Those guys would slip out of the pocket when things broke down - after watching 2 years of him, I feel like Tebow struggles with that.
