the PSU and Nebraska games. That is already 2, too many....
Coaches deserve props for that. Then again, that might have been the game winning FG if we kick the tying field goal five minutes earlier.
Not bad considering another monsoon game versus Northwestern.
Then again, that might have been the game winning FG if we kick the tying field goal five minutes earlier.
If we'd tied it up with 5:00, Northwestern would have approached the next possession completely differently. They also would have gotten a kickoff instead of taking over at their 4-yard line.
You can't assume we'd have gotten the ball back with the score tied.
That's why I kick the FG. You can't assume we'd get the ball back that late and our 2-minute offense was abysmal last week, so go for the sure thing chip shot FG and trust the D that was good all game long.
Besides, NW moved the ball out to the 30 It's not as if they just ran into a stacked line three times and punted. They ran their regular offense. They moved the ball pretty well, converting two first downs, and fortunately we were able to make one big play. They were three yards short of converting one more time and being able to run out the clock. Huge gamble by the staff and the defense bailed them out.
Fitz no longer starting. Green/Smith are both much better, and for better or worse, are the future. My guess is for the better. So, a coach had to decide that.
Playcallilng continues to suck pretty hard.
and executing that field goal was incredible
Borges' back. There were plays to be made all damn day. And in OT they finally made some.
So you're disregarding the last several weeks of offensive playcalling over a few dropped balls? Even if they make these plays you speak of, Borges would still find a way to stall the offense a few plays later.
not disregarding but prior to the last few weeks he was finding ways to put points on the board. The offensive problems are more than half growing pains along with DG becoming a shell of himself (until overtime today). The change in DG in OT was nothing short of stunning...he even ran with the authority that' been missing. Was that about play calling or a team developing?
While I'd love to think that the light finally came back on in ot (DG, borges, you name it), unfortunately I think it's mostly because NW stopped blitzing. The loss is squarely on fitzgerald here...
There were plays to be made all damn day for NW's secondary, too
You are the one sending hate mail. Nice
Its not just the play calling Al is not a good OC on all levels.
Yes. The OC is responsible for player development, planning, and play calling. Fail, fail, and fail.
Crap...I hope this didn't save Borges' job. The kids won this one, certainly not the coaching staff.
The end does not justify the means
Brian's prediction of non-negative rushing yards proved true.
I am happy.
but I'll take it. How can it be 9-9 and then everything is unleashed in OT? Well, it helps that NW did not want to intercept ANY balls today. Either way, I'm happy for the sanity of MGOBLOG and that I will never have to see those atrocious unis again. My eyes are burning. No, wait, that was the mirror. No, let's stick with the uniforms.
Well, the starting field position teams get in OT has a lot to do with the scoring we saw.
but we were first and goal from the 10 after the "punt" and got -2 yards.
this whole thread, and no one mentioned it until now. That was absolutely ridiculous. And that is why more than anything Borges needs to go. . .
until overtime. Just very strange play calling. Maybe something is wrong with Al Borges?
what was unleased in OT?? we threw just one pass in the endzone in all of the OTs combined (the butt TD). we threw one pass in the endzone (incomplete gallon fade) the entire regulation. redzone playcalling was just mindboggling to me. DG made some plays with his legs in OT.. there was no unleashing of the offense, imo.
i just remembered another pass to gallon in the endzone in OT just off his hands on a post. so 2 attempts at a TD in OT.
So, Ohio, right?
HORRIBLE coaching to go for it on 4th and not have tried a fade on 3rd. It was like Hoke and Borges made the decision after the failed 3d down.
Fine, be aggressive and go for the TD, but holy crap that whole sequence was bad.
Then there's reckless. That 4th down call was reckless with a chip shot field goal to tie. No rational reason to put confidence in the offense in that situation with its recent track record.
Except maybe to show THEM that you had confidence in them.
Yup. Have faith in the kids. Gardner picked up a 1st down on 4th and longer later in the game. Ran to the same side, too.
Execution on similar play calls. Plus, Gardner made that same play many times before. OT last year against NW IIRC. Coaches expect this kids to execute when they call a play.
Are you kidding me? That first down pickup was on an improvisation by Gardner on a called pass play. That was all Devin. The stuffed goal line play was a called run that was poorly conceived.
Only happy when we're miserable.
Know what - Fuck it. We won. I'm gonna worry about coaching, o line play, etc later. Tonight I'm going to watch football and drink beer and be happy.
I hear you brother
minus the beer for me. I'm on the clock.
minus beer plus scotch plus a cigar minus football plus a fire pit.
Go Blue - warts and all!
You play to win the game. We won. It is a good night. A raise of the glass to you.
So excited about Hoke tonight. Really wanted him to win after that 4th down call.
Like the aggressiveness to go for in on that 4th down - don't mind the play call but it should have been called to the wide side of the field - so play not bad just wrong side of the field.
That quick field goal is due to great coaching - that was the best executed quick field goal that I have ever seen.
If you don't think the players won that in spite of the bad coaching today then you don't know football.
then you don't know football. Borges is awful. He has to lose his job. But you win and lose as a team.
I saw multiple drives stall out because Gardner missed an open receiver, or because Gallon dropped a first down (or because Gallon dropped a TD). I'm happy for the players, but fans are pushing back against the "execution" mantra so hard and vilifying Borges to the point that every mistake is a coaching error. I'm not angry at college kids for messing up, but certainly part of the reason that the team had its back against the wall was because of mistakes made by the players (in addition to mistakes made by the coaches).
Fake pass and late handoff play worked over and over. It recreated our run game for the night. GREAT scheme change. Very happy with that adjustment.
i give him some credit for that. i was at game and didn't have benefit of replay. but that play seemed to work a lot. i'm a huge critic of borges, but imo he did a decent job of play calling. but his redzone calls sucked. i can't ignore that. i still hope he and funk are canned.
I could go on and on but I'll just summarize- Fire AB
I just won a parlay on michigan and the under... never in doubt...
I would fire Borges, then hire him again on thursday... that would shake it up...
seriously I think this win, and overtime, was what this team needed...
I thought this may be a season-changer for this team.
Why don't we throw deep routes or fades to Funchess? I know Gallon is a good WR but he is a huge risk on a fade. I was upset with Borges about 35 times in this game.
