Site hosting

Submitted by TIMMMAAY on

Question for the powers that be;

What will it take to upgrade the hosting of this site? Seriously, anytime there is heavy traffic here there are constant 522, 502 errors like clockwork. This is the only site that I visit that has this problem.

Please fix it. The hamsters on the wheel aren't keeping up anymore, and really haven't for several years now. I think maybe they be dead, I don't know.

If we are serious about this then the fastest way to get this done would be for those of us in the Ann Arbor area to get together and stand in front of Seth's house wearing clown masks. We don't have to say anything. He will get the point.

Interesting stats on here.  Not sure how realistic they are.

https://www.similarweb.com/website/mgoblog.com#overview

about 1.5 million visits a month.
 Average duration is 4.5 minutes.
2.5 page views per visit.
94.5% of traffic from US.
40% of traffic arrives and then leaves without ever accessing any other pages.
15% of traffice comes from other sites.  (1.3% from ElevenWarriors, 33% from Feedly and 30% from board2go).  conversely, 29% leave the site to go to Youtube, 16% to ESPN, and 20% to Twitter.
6% of traffic comes from a search.
5% of traffic comes from Social Media.  (52% Twitter, 24% Reddit, 16% FB, 4% youtube and 2% Flickr
.02% of traffic is from ads driving views to Mgoblog.  not sure how much we 'advertise' so that could be expected or extremely shitty.

Can you please provide to me the link to the website you visit with any regularity where this also occurs?  Just one.   I dont need to see more than one other site where this happens to you cause i've NEVER seen it anywhere I visit.

Timmmy asks a very legitimate question and he asked it nicely.  That's not complaining - that's helping a business owner idenfify an situation that's problematic to his customers and if you dont this is an issue you're kidding yourself.

What is really ironic about it is how much Brian is beginning to look like somone he used to bash constantly, Jason McIntyre.  Back in the day of the Blogs With Balls Conference, Brian absolutely shredded him for some of the shit he was pulling.  For several years before McIntrye sold The Big Lead, he kept talking about upcoming server/website upgrades.  And now we're seeing the same thing from Brian.  He's been talking about a redesign and upgrade for years, but nothing ever happens.

Brian,

Go get a quote on some bomb-ass servers and whatnot, talk to Silent Bob - motherfucker's an electrical genius and shit - he turned his mom's vibrator into a CD player using some chicken wire and shit, - total up the cost, and start a GoFundMe page. You think the money comes in quick for a football preview that we all read once, watch it roll in for a site we read on an hourly basis. There will be no sticker shock here. Get it done.

Thanks.

I'm surprised their advertisers and sponsors don't raise a fuss about this.  If the money cannon(s) are unhappy, they would get movement on it more than us free site users (plus, there's always beveled guilt if you want to support the site).

I see the airing of grievances is going quite well.  One surprise announcement from a recruit expected to committ to Michigan starts things nicely.

Here's my grievance.  I can't stand people on Facebook who constantly forward quirky, adorable, clutzy, or cute memes and insist This is sooooooo me!

No, you are soooooo not every cute, adorable, clutzy, quirky meme that comes along, nor are your friends.

My feats of strength will be in another post.

"What will it take to upgrade the hosting of this site?"

The folks that run the site actually caring about fixing the problem.

It isn't hard. It isn't expensive... but for some reason, they just refuse to fix the problems.

Def need an upgrade, I come here specifically for my Michigan related news as it is usually the fastest (Twitter beats somethings) and most accurate. You know it's bad when something important happens and MLive provides me the story first because the website is down.

Another point that some people have mentioned is that the website is outdated. I started lurking on the blog about 3 years ago and set up an account last year. I had actually known about the blog longer but was very turned off initially by the layout and the outdated feel. The content here is bar none but you don't realize that if you just visit the site. The OGs have always known about the content and what the blog has to offer, so it is easy to forget that the layout is the first thing a lot of us new guys notice when we first visit the blog.

I know it's free for us and we should just respect the fact that we have it. But it's true. I'm starting to fade from the blog due to these issues. Anytime something major happens I'm better off checking bleacher report :X

looks like it was made in 2002.  It has a vintage charm.  But Brian really does need to add server capacity.  The premier site for Michigan athletics shouldn't be going down every time a 17 year old announces what college he's going to.

There are a lot of wealthy people that frequent this site and use the forums.  I doubt that getting funding for a solution would be that difficult.

I've made the offer mulitple times over the years to contribute to a server capacity upgrade if it was specifically available.  I think I remember his saying once the site upgrade was tied to the server capacity issue (cant have one without the other if you know what I mean) so perhaps that's what's holding things up.

Or as TImmmy speculates perhaps the hamsters have died.

There's a lot of things in life that tick me off.  The older I get, the bigger that list of things gets.

One thing that will never, ever be on that list, no matter how old I am, is the MGoBlog server.  Good God.
