SI.com's "Top 40 Workout Warriors": #5 Will Make You Soil Yourself!

It's Rashan Gary:

The Wolverines are listed by some preseason magazines as having only one returning starter on defense, but that’s misleading. They have a bunch of guys who, like Gary, played extensively last year. While playing on a loaded D-line, Gary had 27 tackles and five tackles for loss as a true freshman. Expectations are sky high for him to be one of the nation’s biggest breakout players in 2017. Jim Harbaugh certainly stokes those expectations when he tweeted out some off-season workout numbers that spotlighted Gary’s athleticism. On it, the 6’5”, 287-pounder was listed as timing a 4.57 in the 40, fastest among not only Michigan D-linemen, but also the linebackers (a 4.63 was the best among those). Gary also vertical jumped 31 inches and broad-jumped 9’6”. The other number that was truly stunning at his size was the 6.70 L-drill time. At the 2017 NFL combine, the fastest time for all D-linemen was a 6.85, and you have to go back six years to find a D-lineman that clocked a fastest time than Gary’s 6.70. Sam Acho ran a 6.69 and he did that weighing 25 pounds less. The fastest L-drill time among all Wolverine DBs was a 6.79 and among linebackers was a 6.89.

I love me some Rashan, but the young man is getting more attention than Peppers. I love it, but really hope some of our other players show that they too are as good or better than Rashan. Can't wait.

Than Peppers was at any particular position and I don't think it will be close. Peppers is phenomenal. But he was a tweener and was effective as a Swiss army knife. He didn't dominate a particular position. Gary will dominate at strong side end week in and week out and be a top 3 draft pick.

Gonna expert, most (ESPN types) skim the surface based on fact sheets and make assumptions without really analyzing things like playing time last year. Just lost x starters so y will be the result. Hogwash!

If the backup DL can hold their own, I think the unit as a whole can be elite again. Rashan is going to murder tackles this year, QB's too.

The backups are going to have to grow up fast, though. I feel more than confident in the starters with Winovich, Gary, Mone and Hurst (should they all stay healthy), but everyone behind them has taken next to zero meaningful college snaps. And a lot of them are true freshmen or RS freshmen.

I think the starters on the DL could be better than the starters we had last year, but the depth right now is nowhere even close to what it was a year ago. And unless the young guys grow up quickly, that could be problematic in tight games.

But arguments as to Peppers v Gary.. Well elite pass rushers are very hard to come by. HOWEVA I have never seen so many team fall behind schedule or toss the play book from Peps screen shattering abilities. I hope its not prescient, but Winovich got to tee off an awful lot becuase of Peps screen destruction. That being said.. Gary FTW

...so no one is going to mention how the article is over a week old and has already made it to MGoBlog?

Okay, cool...yes, Gary is going to be nearly unstoppable. And when teams do stop him, it'll be because he's double teams with a RB or helping...meaning Winovich, Mone, Hurst and Bush are about to have HUGE years as well.

We have 12 regular season games. I'll set the over/under at 15.5 opposing QBs who take meaningful snaps (meaning no mop-up duty).

I soiled myself just based on the OP's title.

Also, the premise that the DL is going to be great despite players graduating and going off to the NFL is great in that even our rivals don't challenge it much.  With Harbaugh and his merry band on the recruiting trail, we're finally getting back to "RELOAD" rather than "REBUILD" mode.

Giggity.

Is it looking like Gary is going to stick at SDE? I feel like the thought early on was that he would start at SDE and then potentially transition to 3Tech, but I don't think I've heard much about him at tackle recently (save for potential 3rd down packages where they lift Mone and fold him inside).

lives up to his potential, and the rest of the D line gets enough push to keep him from constantly being tag teamed.

Frank Clark was a decent end, but I am hoping to see a Brandon Graham or Woodley type performance from the DE position.
