Should Henry Have Been Called For Targeting?

I am glad he didn't, obviously, but if this happened to Rudddddddock I would have been livid.  This resulted in Hackenberg being "shaken up", although I do think the attention was more focused on his neck than his "probable, mild concussion."

It sure looks like Henry has plenty of chance to not drive his head directly at a guy who is clearly falling to the ground already.

Also, I will give you a post below this, please neg it (if you feel so inclined) so your vote actually counts instead of this one.

not sure why he even chose to hit him because he was clearly already going down.

But oh well, it was hilarious to see Hack running off the field on 3rd down even though he had to go for it. He was sick of the beating!

The emotion on the field builds after shots are taken. I don't recall the sequence but this hit came after Rudock's head snapped back, on a fairly clean but maybe excessive hit, prior to his interception, I believe. The Penn State DLine definitely plays like they want to knock QBs out of the game "cleanly."

Retaliation happens. Watching your QB get mauled adds fuel to the fire, which it should, it's football and those are your brothers. One just has to play balls to the wall, within the rules. Unfortunately, targeting is subjective.

Right, so your claim is that the call on Zettel had no effect on the way the other players play, including Henry's, throughout the rest of the game?

I think you're simply being obtuse, but there is an important point here that gets to the heart of the targeting rule. If we assume that players will respond to the way the game is officiated, we can create a safer environment for all players by calling a tight game (and I think that this is a reasonable assumption to make). If, as you presume, players will not react in any way to the officiating, then the targeting rule is pointless theater.

Once again, you are putting words in my mouth.  I never once claimed, as you presumed I did, that "players will not react in any way to the officiating".  You are the one who has been saying that.

My claim is that you don't have any idea what would have happened in your made up what-if situation

It was a dumb move by Henry, QB was already going down.  No need to ram him with your shoulder and get the possible 15 yard penalty or ejection.  Don't think it's targeting but it could easily be unnecessary roughness.

Agree 100%.

IMO it wasn't targetting (and the other angle clearly shows this)...but it easily could've been unnecessary roughness just like Zettel.

IMO, neither was targetting, BOTH were unnecessary roughness. James Ross' targetting flag falls into this same category. Should've been 15 yards in all 3 cases, no ejections.

That said, officials missed TWO targetting calls on Minnesota (both to Rudock). They missed an unnecessary roughness on Indiana (also to Rudock). And the Bolden flag was neither targetting NOR was it unnecessary roughness - it was nothing.

And these are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head while I'm typing.

Henry needs to relax...with the late stuff. Wasn't it him that went kind of late and Morrelli'd Hackenberg towards the end of the game?

He's going to get a 15 yarder if he keeps it up. Peppers can cool it on the smack talk when he's on the other teams bench and all eyes are on him. Chesson can't be "dabbin" in the endzone either.

I hate it, but these refs are sooooo inconsistent that it's only a matter of time before one of these 3 draw a flag. I saw a ref throw a 15 yard flag for a player spinning the football after scoring...but it wasn't like they do on NFL countdown where they "warm their hands" while it spins...he just spun it a little and ran off. It had like 2.5 rotations before the ball stopped moving - 15 yarder for celebration. I immediately thought of Chesson doing "the whip" or whatever that shit is during the IU game after he caught the free play/Desmond dive TD.

It's stupid, but there's a ref somewhere that is going to throw a flag for that. I'll kick, I'll scream, and I won't be the least bit surprised.

We can't afford for any of these 15 yard silly penalties to be called against us on Saturday.
