Should Henry Have Been Called For Targeting?
I am glad he didn't, obviously, but if this happened to Rudddddddock I would have been livid. This resulted in Hackenberg being "shaken up", although I do think the attention was more focused on his neck than his "probable, mild concussion."
It sure looks like Henry has plenty of chance to not drive his head directly at a guy who is clearly falling to the ground already.
Also, I will give you a post below this, please neg it (if you feel so inclined) so your vote actually counts instead of this one.

When I saw it live I thought it might be. But it looks like his helmet just missed over hacks

is ever close to hitting the QB. Maybe lowering his head is not the best move, but it's important to hit the QB. He was going down, but it wasn't late.

I need the reverse angle.

What is targeting?

I would have been livid. I don't care as much about this Ruddock character. And don't get me started about Rudddock.
November 25th, 2015 at 10:43 AM ^
But when we're talking about it happening to Ruddddock, things have gone too far.

I'm good with that.
Rudddock makes D's look out-of-place.

not sure why he even chose to hit him because he was clearly already going down.
But oh well, it was hilarious to see Hack running off the field on 3rd down even though he had to go for it. He was sick of the beating!
November 25th, 2015 at 10:42 AM ^
If Zettel didn't, there's no such thing as targeting.
November 25th, 2015 at 10:45 AM ^
Agreed. Zettlel left his feet to make contact, that should be targetting 100 times out of 100
November 25th, 2015 at 11:20 AM ^
I'm still amazed that the play was reviewed...and they concluded it was not ejectionable. I mean honestly, how can you not get it right in the replay booth....I just cannot understand how comically awful they are at this
November 25th, 2015 at 11:54 AM ^
They always review targeting.
November 25th, 2015 at 11:44 AM ^
Agreed, but glad it wasn't called now. Need him for the STAEE beatdown!
November 25th, 2015 at 12:34 PM ^
Bad news: steaming pile of a call.
Good news: Zettel starts Saturday keeping our dim hope of winning the East alive.
November 25th, 2015 at 5:11 PM ^
Zettel gets tossed for targetting Cook (or whoever is at QB for STAEE) after hitting him below the waist with his forearm.
November 25th, 2015 at 12:39 PM ^
Jake was also hit on the chin on when he was sacked earlier in the game.

The emotion on the field builds after shots are taken. I don't recall the sequence but this hit came after Rudock's head snapped back, on a fairly clean but maybe excessive hit, prior to his interception, I believe. The Penn State DLine definitely plays like they want to knock QBs out of the game "cleanly."
Retaliation happens. Watching your QB get mauled adds fuel to the fire, which it should, it's football and those are your brothers. One just has to play balls to the wall, within the rules. Unfortunately, targeting is subjective.
November 25th, 2015 at 11:29 AM ^
There is no such thing as an excessive clean hit in my book. You get a shot to tee off on someone with the ball, and you can do it cleanly without going helmet to helmet, wreak absolute havoc. That's how fumbles happen. See also the frank Clark hit on Braxton from a couple years ago.
November 25th, 2015 at 11:33 AM ^
Yeah, exactly. The Zettle thing frees up Henry to blast Hackenberg on this play. And I think the more interesting question is, if Zettel gets kicked out for that one, do you think Henry comes in that hard? My guess is not.
November 25th, 2015 at 11:37 AM ^
This seems like speculation that has no basis in fact. How do you know what Henry would have done if Zettel had been kicked out?
November 25th, 2015 at 11:50 AM ^
So, let me get this straight. You don't think the way a game is called has an effect on the way players play? You don't think players in general try to avoid penalties?
November 25th, 2015 at 11:53 AM ^
Hmm, I don't remember claiming that. My point is that you have no idea what Henry was thinking, it is pure speculation in a 'what-if' situation. If worms had machine guns birds would be afraid of them.
November 25th, 2015 at 12:21 PM ^
Right, so your claim is that the call on Zettel had no effect on the way the other players play, including Henry's, throughout the rest of the game?
I think you're simply being obtuse, but there is an important point here that gets to the heart of the targeting rule. If we assume that players will respond to the way the game is officiated, we can create a safer environment for all players by calling a tight game (and I think that this is a reasonable assumption to make). If, as you presume, players will not react in any way to the officiating, then the targeting rule is pointless theater.
November 25th, 2015 at 12:22 PM ^
Once again, you are putting words in my mouth. I never once claimed, as you presumed I did, that "players will not react in any way to the officiating". You are the one who has been saying that.
My claim is that you don't have any idea what would have happened in your made up what-if situation
November 25th, 2015 at 12:31 PM ^
He didn't make that claim. He said we don't know. I don't think he can be any more clear.
November 25th, 2015 at 12:29 PM ^
Sorry to butt in gentleman, but I don't think IncrediblyBLUE was being obtuse. In fact, I find his need to argue a relatively mundane point acute actually.
I'll see myself out now. Carry on...
November 25th, 2015 at 10:43 AM ^
I'm sorry, I just can't believe people are still spelling it Ruddock.
November 25th, 2015 at 10:44 AM ^
It was a dumb move by Henry, QB was already going down. No need to ram him with your shoulder and get the possible 15 yard penalty or ejection. Don't think it's targeting but it could easily be unnecessary roughness.
November 25th, 2015 at 11:04 AM ^
Agree 100%.
IMO it wasn't targetting (and the other angle clearly shows this)...but it easily could've been unnecessary roughness just like Zettel.
IMO, neither was targetting, BOTH were unnecessary roughness. James Ross' targetting flag falls into this same category. Should've been 15 yards in all 3 cases, no ejections.
That said, officials missed TWO targetting calls on Minnesota (both to Rudock). They missed an unnecessary roughness on Indiana (also to Rudock). And the Bolden flag was neither targetting NOR was it unnecessary roughness - it was nothing.
And these are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head while I'm typing.
November 25th, 2015 at 11:13 AM ^
Henry needs to relax...with the late stuff. Wasn't it him that went kind of late and Morrelli'd Hackenberg towards the end of the game?
He's going to get a 15 yarder if he keeps it up. Peppers can cool it on the smack talk when he's on the other teams bench and all eyes are on him. Chesson can't be "dabbin" in the endzone either.
I hate it, but these refs are sooooo inconsistent that it's only a matter of time before one of these 3 draw a flag. I saw a ref throw a 15 yard flag for a player spinning the football after scoring...but it wasn't like they do on NFL countdown where they "warm their hands" while it spins...he just spun it a little and ran off. It had like 2.5 rotations before the ball stopped moving - 15 yarder for celebration. I immediately thought of Chesson doing "the whip" or whatever that shit is during the IU game after he caught the free play/Desmond dive TD.
It's stupid, but there's a ref somewhere that is going to throw a flag for that. I'll kick, I'll scream, and I won't be the least bit surprised.
We can't afford for any of these 15 yard silly penalties to be called against us on Saturday.
November 25th, 2015 at 11:57 AM ^
Sometimes I legitimately would believe that Peppers isn't talking smack but just being pumped up in general. Idk, I'm projecting, but I could see him giving props for a good play.
