Shea Patterson & Josh Metellus named first Alternate Captains
Never been done for Michigan Football. Wonder if this has to do with Bush & Higdon not playing the bowl game and being replaced as captains by Winovich & Perry.
In the video MGoBlue posted they also mentioned this so it's a real thing.Shea Patterson is an alternate captain on offense, Josh Metellus on defense, per UM Athletics

That's.. interesting.
August 20th, 2019 at 8:51 PM ^
That's dumb. Either name them captains or not
August 20th, 2019 at 8:54 PM ^
They're not captains. They're alternate captains.
August 20th, 2019 at 9:18 PM ^
Which is dumb like i said
August 21st, 2019 at 9:48 AM ^
agreed, alternate?? I was a bit surprised that Patterson was not name Captain.
August 21st, 2019 at 11:41 AM ^
Is this like being the assistant to the captains? #michaelscott'd

Calling something dumb when no one knows what it actually is...is, well, dumb.
It could mean anything but what I like most is the QB is seen as a leader. Maybe not Bredeson, but he's one of them. That's a positive.
Think I'm wrong? Go watch All or Nothing and watch Wilton Speight and John O'Korn.
The defense rests.

Now you see that evil will always triumph, because good is dumb.

Two very deserving young men.
Congrats Shea and Josh!!!
GO BLUE

A dollar that team votes captains, coaches vote alternate captains...one is popularity, other is what coaches see...
August 21st, 2019 at 2:01 AM ^
I think it’s the other way around actually.
August 21st, 2019 at 2:18 AM ^
Far as I know captains are elected by the players in an anonymous vote. If something has changed on that it is a recent change.
August 21st, 2019 at 9:06 AM ^
Harbaugh mentioned that this year the team would take a vote, but coaches would get the final say on who captains are.

Saturday night in Orlando! Can’t wait!!

August 20th, 2019 at 10:27 PM ^
There's an NFL team in Orlando now?
August 20th, 2019 at 10:36 PM ^
If you consider the Pro Bowl teams to be NFL teams, then yes!
August 21st, 2019 at 7:49 AM ^
Hayden Fox was the coach of the Orlando Breakers in the 90s. Not sure about now.

More Seniors
Great

Good decision. Although the NCAA rules limit the number of captains to no more than four per team, would it hurt to have four of the five captains (Bredeson, Hudson, Kemp, and alternating Patterson and Metellus) go out for the coin toss at the start of each game?
August 20th, 2019 at 9:38 PM ^
Interesting. I saw a video of osu naming captains today. I can’t remember if it was on ig or r/cfb. Either way, It was like a five minute long video. There must’ve been damned near 20 kids that were called up or announced or whatever.
Part of me was thinking that’s the most buckeye approach to captaincy. They always do slightly weird, off brand, stuff you’d expect from like a sunbelt program. Yet, they dominate while straddling the line of “new money” mentality and blue blood dominance.
closing points:
1) I’m glad the NCAA acted swiftly and capped captains at four.
2) I’ll quit drinking and go to bed

I don't see anything wrong with this. At the end of the day, those two are likely going to be coordinating the entire offense/defense on the field. Shea, obviously because he's the QB. And Metellus, because he's the most experienced player on the defense playing a position that can see the entirety of the offense.

Go blue!
I think that both are going to have a great season.
August 20th, 2019 at 9:32 PM ^
Any word on possible 2nd alternate captains ? I hope we hear something soon.

Don Browns mustache followed by Down Browns screaming mustache.
August 20th, 2019 at 10:45 PM ^
I can confirm. I am a permanent captain on the defense.
August 20th, 2019 at 9:37 PM ^
I would think this has to be related to last year's situation. Unless it's just a way of acknowledging Patterson and Metellus?
Either way, am I naive for thinking the 3 guys they chose as Captains this year are all the type to play in the Bowl game no matter what?
August 20th, 2019 at 9:38 PM ^
Please, just add them. 5 Captains is OK. Those two guys are key to our season. That would work for me. The three we have right now are not "edgy" enough. Need to add some dudes as captain who are ballers.

?...?♂️
I'm for it.

Did you change your username on here just to post the same comment in multiple threads worded differently about captains?
August 20th, 2019 at 11:19 PM ^
Is there anything you don’t complain about?
August 20th, 2019 at 9:55 PM ^
Nope - Shea Patterson needs to be a Captain and responsible as the key guy on offense. If you have ever won a championship in football (I have), your QB needs to be that Marvel hero. Without question THE guy.
August 20th, 2019 at 10:21 PM ^
Congrats on winning a madden tournament playing as the patriots
August 20th, 2019 at 10:23 PM ^
The last 2 national champions did not have any QB's as team captains.
August 20th, 2019 at 11:22 PM ^
So you were, allegedly, on a football team that, allegedly, won a championship and that somehow anoints you an expert in how a captaincy should or shouldn’t go down? Interesting logic.
August 21st, 2019 at 12:18 AM ^
I was last kid off the bench on a little league town championship team in 1989. So take that!
August 20th, 2019 at 9:53 PM ^
Interesting. You obviously see alternate captains in hockey, but not so much in football. Curious about the reasoning.
August 20th, 2019 at 9:55 PM ^
Cool with it in hockey for a 20-person team, fine by me in another sport with 85 or whatever
August 20th, 2019 at 10:20 PM ^
If they are going to do this, I think it would be cool to name a couple of leaders or alternative captains for each class. And have them earn, take ownership and responsibility, and grow the respect within the team throughout the years they are here.
August 21st, 2019 at 3:10 AM ^
Didn't Rich Rod do something like this...'captain' for each class..and he also had captains selected at the end of the season.
August 21st, 2019 at 9:56 AM ^
i don’t recall about having class captions. But I do remember the end of the year captains, that was stupid.
August 20th, 2019 at 10:29 PM ^
This is the coaches stepping in and righting the ship.
August 20th, 2019 at 11:18 PM ^
Very Hockey of them. I love it.
August 20th, 2019 at 11:19 PM ^
I don't think the two captains are going to jump ship come bowl time, especially if we make the playoffs. I think it just a way to acknowledge two other seniors.
August 20th, 2019 at 11:37 PM ^
The more leadership a team has the better as far as Im concerned. Congrats to these young men.
