Shea Patterson & Josh Metellus named first Alternate Captains

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on August 20th, 2019 at 8:41 PM

Never been done for Michigan Football. Wonder if this has to do with Bush & Higdon not playing the bowl game and being replaced as captains by Winovich & Perry.

Shea Patterson is an alternate captain on offense, Josh Metellus on defense, per UM Athletics

In the video MGoBlue posted they also mentioned this so it's a real thing.

Calling something dumb when no one knows what it actually is...is, well, dumb.

It could mean anything but what I like most is the QB is seen as a leader. Maybe not Bredeson, but he's one of them. That's a positive.

Think I'm wrong? Go watch All or Nothing and watch Wilton Speight and John O'Korn.

The defense rests.

Good decision.  Although the NCAA rules limit the number of captains to no more than four per team, would it hurt to have four of the five captains (Bredeson, Hudson, Kemp, and alternating Patterson and Metellus) go out for the coin toss at the start of each game?

Interesting. I saw a video of osu naming captains today. I can’t remember if it was on ig or r/cfb. Either way, It was like a five minute long video. There must’ve been damned near 20 kids that were called up or announced or whatever.
Part of me was thinking that’s the most buckeye approach to captaincy. They always do slightly weird, off brand, stuff you’d expect from like a sunbelt program. Yet, they dominate while straddling the line of “new money” mentality and blue blood dominance.

closing points:

1) I’m glad the NCAA acted swiftly and capped captains at four.

2) I’ll quit drinking and go to bed

I don't see anything wrong with this. At the end of the day, those two are likely going to be coordinating the entire offense/defense on the field. Shea, obviously because he's the QB. And Metellus, because he's the most experienced player on the defense playing a position that can see the entirety of the offense.

I would think this has to be related to last year's situation. Unless it's just a way of acknowledging Patterson and Metellus?

Either way, am I naive for thinking the 3 guys they chose as Captains this year are all the type to play in the Bowl game no matter what?

Please, just add them.  5 Captains is OK.  Those two guys are key to our season.  That would work for me.  The three we have right now are not "edgy" enough.  Need to add some dudes as captain who are ballers.

Nope - Shea Patterson needs to be a Captain and responsible as the key guy on offense.  If you have ever won a championship in football (I have), your QB needs to be that Marvel hero.    Without question THE guy.

If they are going to do this, I think it would be cool to name a couple of leaders or alternative captains for each class. And have them earn, take ownership and responsibility, and grow the respect within the team throughout the years they are here.

I don't think the two captains are going to jump ship come bowl time, especially if we make  the playoffs. I think it just a way to acknowledge two other seniors.
