There is a significant difference in the body of work, and I'm not in any way saying Morris can't improve or won't be the starter this year.

I'm just pointing out that the "reclamation" of Alex Smith was largely a product of his draft position - he wasn't good, but he was not awful pre-Harbaugh, just a bust for a #1 pick... while, up to this point Morris has been awful.

Yeah, it is not unprecedented for an underclassmen to make a mental jump going into his upperclass years and look completely different.  Problem is, what were the problems he is trying to overcome?  Mechanical?  Mental?  Motivational?  All of the above?  If anyone can do it, Harbaugh would probably be the guy.  He did it with Alex Smith with the 49ers.  He did it with his QB at San Diego.  We've seen Mattison do it with the defense from 2010 to 2011.  Sure it could happen.  And if motivation was getting in the way, well Harbaugh brought in a ton of competition, so Morris will really have to earn playing time at this point.

OK, maybe I wasn't clear in my previous post that you replied to.

What examples are there of a talented QB suddenly becoming a good QB in one offseason?

Alex Smith was a huge stud his junior year in college.  Harbaugh had him for two years in which: (i) he benched him and (ii) had him at a QB rating (90.7) in the year before the benching that is very similar to what Smith has put up under Andy freaking Reid (89.1 and 93.4).

I don't think I can pull out a perfect analogy, every situation is different, but the first thing that comes to my mind is Borges's own Cade McNown.  He was like last in the Pac-10 in passer efficency his sophomore year, then lead the nation the next year.  Also, what about Denard?  His freshman year he was an absolute terrible passer, and the next season, he was top-20 in passer efficency.  Kirk Cousins was kind of similar.  His RS freshman year, he was terrible in limited time on a mediocre team.  His RS Sophomore season his numbers weren't attrocious, he still wasn't great, and split time with Keith Nichol because he couldn't lock down the starting spot.  One year later, Nichol is a WR and Cousins leads MSU to 11 wins.  Braxton Miller messed up bubble screens his first year starting and the next, was a death dealer.

I'm rooting for Shane to win the job and lock down the job. Rather have Shane in 15/16 then go into 16 with who's gonna be the QB in 16? He's only had two starts I'm not saying he's JT Barrett but let the kid hit the field and grow. I trust Harbaugh what he did with Alex Smith when everyone and anyone thought bust went to an NFC Title game with him.

This morning he said that Rudock reminds him of Brian Griese.  Anyone remember that guy?  Former walk-on, game manager type that led us to a MNC in 97?

I think Rudock will start the season at Utah, if for no other reason than his consistency and experience managing an offense.

I also wouldn't be surprised to see Shane get some meaningful playing time early in the season and eventually snatch the starting job from him.  Harbaugh has no qualms about switching QB's midseason.

Not flashy, but had a real knack for hitting the RB in stride out of the backfield.  IMO this was one of the key reasons for our offensive success in 1997.  Also, he made some huge plays with his feet to extend drives.  Not all that nimble, but determined as hell.

where Morris has been effective (small sample size) and seems pretty dangerous.  Has some pretty good wheels.  When Griese made those scampers, I was always like "How in the hell did he just get away with that?"  Morris, on the other hand, looks like he could run away from a few linebackers in the B10.

the past few weeks, which included some anonymous quotes coming from players that said Shane totally rededicated himself to improving and become a much better teammate in the process (reading between the lines, that means "less diva-ish and entitled").

That was just voluntaries so we'll see if that holds in a week or two, but if he's close to Rudock, that's good news about Shane and not bad news about Rudock.

*by "chatter" I don't mean discussion board posts, I mean their "Inside the Fort" segments from Michael Spath et al.

I hate to go with the 'country club additude' thing, but yeah, it kind of seemed like that in the Hoke regime.  Boards have had those rumors about Morris in the past that his goal was to get a scholarship to UM, but hadn't really dedicated himself to truely earning the starting spot.  Also, possible rumors that he didn't really want UM to take a QB in the class before him, why he committed so early.  Granted, all rumors, and I have no idea if they are true, but overall arching theme doesn't seem too off from what we've seen from on-field product of all these additudes.

kid's a 'show pony', just like the original show pony, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Just like CR7, SM likes to prance around, has great hair, a sculpted body, devilish looks, and is all about the flair..in his case, throwing fastballs all the time.

Show ponies are fine in soccer, but they generally don't work in football.  And SM hasn't even done enough to merit being a show pony.

Geez, I really hope so. He's been in the program for 2.5 years now and Ruddock was kicked to the curb by Iowa after a string of uninspiring performances. Iowa, not Oregon or Ohio.

Don't get me wrong, after the last few years, all HAIL MOAR QUARTERBACK, but anyone expecting Ruddock to be a superstar a few weeks after arriving on campus to new coaches and a new system after being average at Iowa for four years is not grounded in reality.

Yes, well, there is that. I'm as baffled as anyone about the inability of our QBs to, you know, throw good passes and improve their skills over the last too many years since Carr left.

But as a junior with years in the program, I'd like to believe that Shane has more upside potential that a fifth year senior that Iowa didn't like. That, and I don't think many of us would be happy getting to the end of the year with starting QB whose review is "Not as bad as a tire fire."

with my own eyes. Chatter doesn't mean squat. How many times we heard positives from a guy only for him to never set foot on the field.

The first interception Morris throws vs Utah, this board will explode to have him taken out (if he starts which I don't think he will).

I am very confident the best QB of the bunch will start. The person that JH picks is the one I'll be rooting for. Totally not even worrying about this. September please hurry.

Oh gawd, Gregg Henson again.  So he heard in his dank Pittsburght mancave that Morris is keeping up?  I mean, he it's the equivalent of going on a premium board and reading some comments from an "insider."

My assumption is that Morris will compete with Rudock.  I suspect Rudock will start at the beginning of the year, but if he falters or Morris continues to improve, I assume he'd get a shot.  Morris was never a stiff, and it feels like everyone read way too much into the Minny game when really nothing worked.

I prediected from the start that Shane will be our starter, Harbaugh is going to want to play the kid with the bigger arm and more potential.

Ruddock proveds a nice backup, but to gauge his performance you have to look beyond the numbers he put up, he just wasn't clutch and checked down over and over again because he knew he didn't have the arm stength to make the big passes.

Your brain hurts because you aren't looking at the facts.

Google "rudock" and see how many hits there are.  Then do the same for "ruddock."  Then think about the fact that maybe there's a reason why peple are having to get used to speling it "Rudock."  When they hear the name more, it will sink in.  In the meantime, take a chill pill.

I expect sparty trolls to say Shane sucks along with the rest of the QB's but their own fans? Morris has started only two games. If you can chalk someone up as a bust after two games then I guess you should be coaching in the nfl because you are the shit!! Why would Shane improve? I'll tell you why, he's older, being pushed harder coached better, has a couple starts under his belt and he's always thrown a good ball. If you don't think so you're stupid! It's the whole offense that needs to improve and perform. If I could guarantee one thing (which I can) rudock is not good enough to carry the offense on his back. If the Oline plays well WR's catch the ball and RB's hit the holes Morris will be just fine, probably better than fine.

I've also been told that if  Rudock doesn't start Michigan is screwed. We have seen Morris play, and we have anecdotal evidence that he still isn't performing. Meanwhole, you give us nothing but reasons why he MAY improve, but nothing saying HOW he has improved.

Right now your argument lacks a solid foundation.

grumbler

Whoever told you "Michigan is screwed" if "Rudock doesn't star" is full of shit, full stop.  If Rudock doesn't start because Harbaugh thinks Morris is better, then it is asinine to argue that Harbaugh is wrong and your source is right, so Michigan is screwed.

Right now your argument lacks even a liquid foundation.  The QB that Harbaugh thinks best will start, and "Michigan is screwed" only if we listen to the asses that say otherwise.

SalvatoreQuattro

who talked to Harbaugh and Minick. You also do not seem to grasp the possibility that Rudock could get hurt or that Morris wins simply because he sucked less. Playing "better" is not the same as being a capable starter.

Currently you are talking out of your ass. You have no information. You just have RAGE. That isn't an  argument. Come back when you have something to say that is supported by information.
