Semi OT: Former Michigan QB Pledge Messiah DeWeaver Commits to MSU
Prepare for 5 years of "lack of respect" and "Michigan didn't want me so I am out to exact revenge" stories by Rexrode & Co. Sets up a fun narrative between DeWeaver and Peters with both being Midwest top 15 type QBs.
Originally a commitment to Michigan, deWeaver re-opened his recruitment after former Wolverines coach Brady Hoke was fired and has made several unofficial visits to Michigan State.
Mississippi State, Penn State, Louisville and Kentucky were the other finalists in deWeaver's recruitment. He's rated the No 1 quarterback in Ohio and No. 12 Pro-Style QB in the nation by 247sports.
According to Rivals.com, deWeaver is rated the No. 8 QB in the nation and No. 232 player overall.
Last season, deWeaver said he was 150-for-210 passing for 1,900 yards, 24 touchdowns and nine interceptions.
Harbaugh.
I'd love to see a comparison of how they reacted when he committed to M vs how they react today. I'm sure a bunch of naysayers are suddenly fans.
The same MSU fans who ripped on him for his first name (and there were a lot on msg boards) when he committed to UM will now be on their knees servicing him now that he has joined the ranks of "be offended by everything and anyone" in EL.
"indeed."
Kinda funny but let's be honest... How many of our own here is saying today "Harbaugh didn't want him anyways" or just have the complete opposite opinion of his game now then they did when he committed here?
Well in our defense, Harbaugh DIDNT want him. Harbaugh visited him and he decommitted the next day. That's pretty telling if you ask me. Not that deWeaver won't be a good player down the line or anything, but he obviously isn't the type of player Harbaugh wants at the position. Be it physically, or mentally, or his attitude/demeanor, there was something about this kid that Harbaugh didn't want leading his offense.
Again, not knocking the kid's talents, but it's not as though he chose MSU over Michigan here. He stayed committed through the whole search and somehow, he meets Harbaugh and decommits? You're trying to tell me that wasn't Harbaugh's decision?
I wish him luck in the future, but let's not get this twisted. Something about him when he met Harbaugh turned Harbaugh off to this kid. He clearly wasn't Michigan QB material in Harbaugh's eyes. An area where I seriously think Harbaugh knows better than EVERYONE
You make a plausible argument, but it could be that DeWeaver met Harbaugh and thought "dang - I committed to a program led by a relatively mellow guy who used positive reinforcement frequently, and now it's led by a maniac who will demand that I commit to the program as much as him" or some other thought that Harbaugh was not the coach for him. It could be that he really liked Nussmeier, and now Nussmeier's gone. It could be that a relatively sparse QB position was going to become much more competitive. It may be that he never liked the 49ers much to begin with, so had an anti-Harbaugh prejudice. Etc.
The bottom line is we don't know what drove DeWeaver's decision. But it doesn't matter - he chose what he thought was best for him, and I hope it works out for him. More particularly, I hope he is a good player on a declining program, and I hope he experiences no success against Michigan.
make convincing arguments. If either is true, then it's best that he went somewhere else. Either Harbaugh didn't really want him, or he really didn't want Harbaugh. Not a guy you want playing the most important position on your team.
All three of you make plausible arguments. Either Harbaugh didn't want him or whatever you just said repeated again.

... with the reality that all four of you present to the table.

... reject your reality and substitute my own." HARBAUGH.
DeWeaver's camp held after the M decommitment that Michigan was still actively pursuing him and that Michigan was still in his top group. So, without pointing fingers at a kid and saying "liar" I don't think we can so persuasively argue that Harbaugh didn't want him.

Good point that we don't know. I hope Messiah has a great career at MSU and that MSU continues to be a good program. I want every big ten team to win every game except for the one they play against Michigan. I don't get the schadenfreunde thing for our conference. While it sucks having to listen to OSU folks talk about their national championship, i'd rather a B1G team wins it than and SEC school.

True, but if that's the way deWeaver felt about Harbaugh being the coach, so you really think Harbaugh wanted him?
I mean if you're a kid who is going to decommit because of how intense Harbaugh is and the fact that he will push you, challenge you, and get in your face, I don't think Harbaugh really wants you to be on the team in the first place. Harbaugh has been recruiting a certain type of player since he has arrived, and if that is deWeaver's mentality, he doesn't fit that mold.
I don't mean to say that Harbaugh flat out said to the kid that he doesn't want him. But with whatever went down, they parted ways. Harbaugh didn't continue to recruit him. Harbaugh didn't want the kid. Flat out. At what point that became evident is irrelevant. But it is true nonetheless.
Yeah, well, that's different because, uhhhh, I don't know why, but it just is.
Was just about to go there. I remember some on other boards trashing him. Quiet now, I'm sure. Oh well, best of luck, kid.
He must not have liked the qb competition at UM.
Wasn't he not recruited by the new regime?
According to DeWeaver, Harbaugh still wanted him but said he would continue recruiting other quarterbacks.
Harbaugh went in to BOTH recruiting classes honoring the guys already committed. In fact, I've heard multiple stories from multiple accounts on how he thought that loyalty was special even if he wouldn't have recruited the player himself.
That doesn't mean he wasn't going to get other players at the same position, but they had a spot at Michigan if they wanted to come. Period.
Who's the better qb now, deweaver or peters?

Hard to say for sure, but most evidence definitely points to Peters. 247 Composite has him 3 spots higher on their pro-style QB rankings. Peters's best offers are Michigan, LSU, Arkansas, Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska, Virginia Tech, Louisville. DeWeaver's are MSU, Arkansas, Lousville, Penn State, Mississippi St, Pitt. And Harbaugh wanted Peters and not DeWeaver.
thought Harbaugh wanted him to stay committed to us?
I never heard that and there was no report of him being recruited by Harbaugh after he decommitted. And that really doesn't pass the smell test. QB stays committed through our awful season and Hoke getting fired. Once the nation's top QB guru is hired, he decides to decommit? I'm not buying that.
And said, in a conversation with Harbaugh, that deWeaver's offer was still there at Michigan. You'll hear MSU fans repeat something deWeaver said in "[Harbaugh] told me I'm still their guy", but I'd take that more as, "we are still recruiting you, we still think you are worthy of an offer at the QB position". But it was pretty clear there were a few other QBs a little higher on the list than deWeaver. deWeaver ultimately went where he felt more wanted.

That was also deWeaver's side of the story. If it went more like "I'll honor your scholarship because you committed to Michigan, but I'm also going to go find my guy. What you do is up to you" it's likely deWeaver didn't want to tell the real story, and I don't blame him.
Just like when you're girlfriend dumps you for being an asshole, that's not exactly the story you tell people when they ask why you're single.

Considering Harbaugh went to see Costello immediately post Jan 15th, and didnt approach DeWeaver for 2 weeks I think there is some "margin of error" in DeWeaver's story that Harbaugh wanted him so badly.
but Harbaugh was recruiting other QBs hard while DeWeaver was committed. That seems to have stopped with Peters in the class.
Sam Webb talked about this frequently while it was going on. It was clear that Michigan had Costello, Eason, Peters and Hastings - at least - ahead of Deweaver on their board.
Peters has more upside. A stronger arm, a little better athlete. DeWeaver has some skills too, though. They are close, as the ratings show, but I'd personally take Peters, but I'd consider both to be projects (Peters probably has a little further to go to reach his ceiling, but his ceiling is also a bit higher).
I have hardly seen enough of Peters to make a comparison, but i did see quite a bit of DeWeaver. When he decommitted i was happy. I was not crazy about his committment one bit.
I am really curious to see if and how MSU develops him. If they can develop him to produce like their recent QB's then i am utterly impressed.
What did you see that you didn't like Champeen?
Also, is that a common thing that recruits can just tell the scouts "oh yeah, 24 Tds, 9 picks"
good luck to him. seems like a good qb, just not the qb JH wanted.
If you have the misfortune of having to interact with any Sparty fanatics on a regular basis, I'm sure you'll hear that Dantonio is a better evaluator of QBs than the coach who was once paid to be a QB for a pretty lengthy career.
That's what you get for interacting with them in the first place.
has dantonio ever recruit any qbs that were heisman candidates? didnt think so
April 22nd, 2015 at 10:42 PM ^
To be fair, Cook could very well become a Heisman candidate this upcoming season. Don't think it'll necessarily happen but it's not the most unlikely thing ever.
April 23rd, 2015 at 12:41 AM ^
No one in their right mind can say Dantonio has a better eye for a QB. But lets be honest here, Dantonio does develop players pretty well, Cook will be drafted in the 1st or 2nd round next year. You told me that 3 years ago watching him play and I would have laughed at you.
Good luck to deWeaver, Harbaugh wanted someone ranked higher and got him. I'm sure if that wouldn't have worked out we would have continued to recruit the kid.
April 23rd, 2015 at 12:46 AM ^
I highly doubt he'll be drafted in the first two rounds, but that doesn't really change your point. He'll probably be drafted someone around where Cousins was drafted, which would give Dantonio 3 straight NFL QBs (Hoyer, Cousins and Cook). That is pretty impressive and would sound so to many QB recruits.
The first two haven't exactly lit up the NFL though. We will see how Cook does.
The same Dantonio that had Andrew Maxwell ahead of Cook?
Fuck it. That's my answer for everything.

why the #1 qb in Ohio didn't have osu in his final list of schools.
Yeah, that kinda surprised me too. Also, that's not a murderers row of final destinations for a top QB.
April 22nd, 2015 at 10:51 PM ^
Urban and co. were looking to only have 1 QB in deWeaver's class, so they decided to not offer him. Instead, OSU pursued Jarrett Guarantano, Dwyane Haskins, and the now recently committed Tristen Wallace.
And that should raise a red flag about deweaver.
Really, just watch his videos. If he is a top 10 QB, then this is an extremely weak QB class. And if its not an extremely weak QB class, then they have his ranking wrong.
Because, like Michigan, they didn't think he was good enough. They picked up a better QB from Texas.
We never offered him.
