Semi-OT: Ann Arbor Listed as Yahoo's #4 Most Livable City

Submitted by Wes Mantooth on

I didn't see this posted anywhere yet, but Yahoo has Ann Arbor listed as it's #4 most livable city in America.   Awesome.  Of course Ogden and Provo, Utah are numbers 2 & 3 based on their ranking criteria so I don't know how much to read into this...

I will always love my hometown but I find almost any other place on earth to be more livable from November to March.

Although the question wasn't addressed to me, I'll add my 2 cents, since I've lived here since 2001 (originally from the farmland north of Detroit).

Yes, the true "downtown" area is dead after work and on the weekend, but there are other areas that have a lot going on at that time.  The comment in the article about restraunts is true, and was a surprise when I moved here.  There's still a lot of the ethnic neighborhoods with their own ancestorial food.  For the size of the city, there's surprisingly a lot of culture.

Crime isn't bad, and the cost of living is really low compared to almost any other city.

So true about the downtown area.  It's really a shame.  The biggest reasons why there is nothing going on downtown at night and on the weekends is that (1) no one lives downtown and (2) Pittsburgh has the highest parking tax in the country, which makes parking in the garages (which you would have to do for anything that is truly in downtown to work) an absolute no go.  I'll be curious to see what happens after Mellon Arena is demolished and they are able to redevelop that area.  If the plan goes through for a Southside Works type area, that could start to change the trend with the downtown area.  One amazing thing about Pittsburgh being ranked #1 again is that they've actually been #1 four of the last five years.  Nice call on the ethnic eateries.  Their ethnic areas are about the best there is between NYC and Chicago.
