Seeking: Columbus Travel Tips

Submitted by MGoAndy on
First time headed down south for The Game and I'm wondering if anyone with experience has any Columbus travel tips to share. I've got a parking pass so that's not a problem, but if there are routes that are quicker than others, roads to stay clear of, etc. that'd be appreciated. I've also been warned numerous times about OSU fans, and I'm wondering if people have advice on not getting bags of piss thrown at me besides luck. Thanks all and Go Blue!

My best advice to you is to find a friend who is from Ohio and ask if you can drive their car. Nothing worse than a Michigan License plate at an Michigan/OSU game. It also will hurt you on the highway with the State Police if you are even going 5 miles over. I've only been to OSU once and having the car with Michigan plates only made me a target wherever I went....and people call Michigan fans names ?????

Having said that, I hope you have a great time.

Yes.  Stay clear of High Street if you can, it'll be super-congested.  I haven't had to park on campus on a game saturday, but the Ackerman Rd. exit off of 315 is a good "back door" to campus.  I assume you're taking US-23 south so turn right on 161 in Worthington to connect to 315.

If the Ackerman exit is all full up, try the Olentangy River Rd. exit about a half-mile further down the road.  I'd also pick up a city road map at a rest station, it's fairly easy to get around the city if you have one handy.  Get a campus map off the university website too.

As for the fans, be alert, don't act like a complete idiot, and be prepared to debate at any moment.  They respect you more if you can talk some decent smack about OSU, e.g. Tress won't win any more NCs, Joe Germaine is playing in the Arena leagues now, etc.  Traveling in a group is a good idea too.  Go get 'em!

Actually, the North Broadway exit off 315 is a good exit, too.  If you take that exit, it will take you to Olentangy River Rd.  Take it South for 1/2 a mile to the University Center.  You will see a sports bar, Damon's.  There is free street parking behind the sports bar, and the Shoe is about a 20-30 minute walk south.  Just walk on Olentangy River Rd.  Enjoy!

About the fans:  Scientists are currently trying to learn how to stop OSU fans from being douchebags.  These same scientists are also researching how to keep rain from falling and how to keep wind from blowing.

In all seriousness Andy unless you've been to a Michigan/OSU game in Columbus you have no idea what you're in store for.  I have been to games literally across the entire Big Ten, four Rose Bowls, an Orange Bowl and Notre Dame twice and I can tell you there is no fan base as angry as the OSU fans are.  They actually take it a personal insult that you are not rooting for their beloved Buckeyes and feel it is a matter of honor in physically attacking opposing fans to demonstrate their allegance to Ohio State.

Be careful.  Most people I know that got in real trouble down here did so when they responded to something stupid a group of OSU fans said to them.

Yes personal experience.

Agreed.  I've been there thrice (missing the game this year for the first time since 02), including visits to both student and general sections, wearing my gear.  Keep your eye on the game and your mouth shut, and you should be fine.

That, and don't walk alone.

I'm not sure what time you are planning on being on the roads near the stadium, but if you are planning on getting down there anytime after 8am on Saturday, the roads are going to be a congested mess and there is no real good way to get around it. Take 23S to 270W to 315S and get off on the Ackerman Rd exit. No matter what time you are getting there, that is the best way to take. Obviously the closer to game time, the more traffic.

OSU fans are horrendous. I have lived in Ohio since I was 4 and have lived in Columbus for the past 6 or 7 years and there is no doubt about it that they are just flat out assholes. They will cuss and scream at Eastern Michigan fans and it's safe to say that they hold nothing back when it comes to The Game. My advice is do not make eye contact when some asshole is berating you and definitely do not try to defend yourself by jawing back unless you are looking for a fight. They are brutal and extremely classless.

Having said that, good luck, I'll be down there too and I expect to take my tongue lashings as well. Good luck and GO BLUE!!!

Make sure you have zero visible UM garb on or in your vehicle. It will act as a lure for any drunken dickheads looking to cause trouble. Last time I was down there I had to borrow my brothers car because mine had a UM license plate frame that I was too lazy to take off...good thing I did too because they literally flipped a car over less than 100 ft from where I was parked. I suggest carrying around a case of Natty Light so you can throw them to distract/lure any oncoming predators.

I have a couple of friends who have had bad experiences in Columbus.  One was in Columbus and had a car with a Michigan bumpersticker on it, and his tires were slashed.  And that wasn't even during football season.  So watch out, seriously.

You nailed it C-Bus.  What truly makes me laugh is the naivity of the Michigan fan making a first time appearance here.  They honestly believe they will be treated much like we treat OSU fans (with civility) and are SHOCKED when they find out that is not the case.

You know what else is amusing?  Take an OSU fan to one of our games at the Big House and they expect the same treatment.  They are equally shocked to NOT get physically abused and screamed at.  They think all fans act like they do.

I think the difference is that at Michigan and the vast majority of the Big 10 the majority of people attending the game are either students or alumnai.  In Columbus I'll bet you less than 25% of the "fans" ever set foot in a classroom in their life unless they were there with the other janitors to clean it up at night.

Even the cops get after Michigan fans.  Last time I was down I was wandering around outside the stadium drinking some beers in my Michigan gear.  A cop came stopped me said I was breaking the law.  Given the fact I was surrounded by tons of other Buckeye's doing the same think I thought he was joking.  When I pointed that out to him I found out he was dead serious.  He ended up saying he would cut us a break but made us drain beer.

Moral of the story is you can't even trust the cops on UM/OSU game day.  If you are not in Buckeye gear when drinking stick to your tailgate spot.

Another excellent piece of advice on the cops.  In 2002 we were walking down High St minding our own business when a guy came out of nowhere in the crowd and punched my buddy who was wearing a Michigan sweatshirt in the side of the head.  Now mind you my friend is an Dentist in his early 60's and the bum who punched him was drunk and about 25 and this was a complete unprovoked sucker punch.  And he did it in full view of a Columbus cop.  As my friend went down we first made sure he was OK and then we turned to the cop and yelled at him was he going to do anything.  He looked right at us and said "you shouldn't have worn the shirt" and walked away.

The same thing happened to me I had mine in a mcDonalds cup and then Like six state cops talked shit to me as he was writing a ticket. Was only drinkin for like 10 min wasn't even buzzing yet. One of the cops told me i was a disgrace to the state ( I live in Toledo) I told him anytime he wants to be a real man take my info off the ticket and give me a call when he was in A2 for a game. Don't expect the cops to help you down in the asshole of ohio

I spent 5 years there when I was young enough to still bring some resemblance of an A game to the bars in German Village, and those were some crazy good times. It truly is shooting fish in a barrel at Victory's, if you are so inclined to do some wolfing. Friday night might be your best bet to go there, before we lay a beatdown on the mood of the city.

Barring that- travel in groups, don't wear Michigan gear unless you have to, and then save it for the Stadium. If it's pretty bad, this is the one time it's ok to leave the Stadium a little early, because you're better off getting out and away from the Stadium than getting caught in the crush of people. Trying not to walk in the middle of crowds. If that means walking all the way to the outside of the Stadium lot and walking the long way around, do it. Don't bring women and children, or anyone incapable of fighting or looking intimidating. Drive slow. Don't say anything. Don't go. And good luck.

It's the sense of denial, that "it's like that everywhere". You believe that stuff, and you get sucker punched. And if you're lucky, it's not with a brick. It worse than anywhere else you've ever been for a game.  And not just Michigan fans think so (check out Texas boards from the last time they went). It's just ten times worse for Michigan.

You are so right.  I have a friend who's from Texas and went to the game down there a few years ago.  He called me afterwards and said "what in the fuck is wrong with those people?   I've been to games at Arkansas, Nebraska, A &M and they all have a reason to hate us and we're treated WAY better than these animals."

The sad thing is that they are proud of it so nothing is going to change.

I went my senior year, the year Harbaugh guaranteed a victory and got it. I was with three or four of my female roommates, and after the game, a couple of guys starting following us. After a couple of minutes, one of them came over and started kicking my roommate. We ran back to our car and got the hell out of there. Back then, they weren't used to winning like they are now, so I would imagine a Michigan win this weekend would put most of them over the edge.

There were 4 of us - 2 Michigan fans, 2 OSU fans.

Walked around after the game by some OSU apartments.  We heard a loud "FUCK MICHIGAN!" and looked up to see a beer keg come flying at us out of the second floor window.  Good times.

You are safest in the stadium itself, as long as you don't do something stupid like sit alone in the student section.

Wear a coat, it will be cold anyhow.  During the game I walked around in full Michigan attire, loud and proud.  After the game, I zipped up the coat and went bar hopping incognito down high street.

I'm reposting this in this thread since I can't start my own thread and the original thread is way down the list.

I have two extra tickets to the game this weekend.  They are in the Michigan Alumni Section.

I'm willing to give them away for free to someone who posts regularly and has over 5000 points or someone who posts regularly to the Diaries.

It's my way of saying "thank you" to all the people who post here.  And since I don't post much, it's my way of giving back.

If you qualify, email me... first person who emails me that qualifies will get them.  Please email me right away.

I'll see you at the game.

Go Blue!

mgrowold, I replied to a post of yours in Buckeyes you kind of like thread. Didn't realize there wasn't a pm system here, and I'm unsure if you'll revisit thread. I was going to mention my e-mail, [email protected]. I am part of a follow-up study with the carcinoid foundation.  I don't know what stage of the game you're in, hopefully cured, but if you ever have any questions regarding treatments, etc, I have developed quite a few contacts with fellow carcinoid patients and a few doctors through the years.  Take care, and enjoy The Game all, hopefully my fellow Ohio brethren act civilized to our guests.

I'm still here but about to go to bed.  I'll email you tomorrow and as of now I'm in good shape with low counts on my urine tests and clean CAT scans.  As my Dr said to me "Don - you'll most likely die with this desease, not from it." so I'm hopeful.

Thanks tor the encouragement.

I just checked your response to my earlier post.  Yes, Dr Shaw it is.  And she's wonderful.  Ironically enough my general oncologist (odd that there is such a thing) is also a Buckeye up here in Northern Ohio.  So for all the distain I have for their fans at the game I sure like their Dr's a LOT.

But they don't go to the games.

Stay clear of High Street and Lane, lots of traffic. If you must walk around Lane, prepare to get heckled. I'm not sure of your parking situation, or where you come from in Michigan, but I would go I-75 south to OH15E (around Findlay) to 23S to 270W to 315S (that 270-315 exchange is .25 miles max, pay attention and exit onto 315S). No one is going to throw a bag of piss on you, fingers crossed. Have fun.
