Saturday Headlines: Will Kentucky Flip Smith Brothers from Michigan?

Submitted by Michigan_Marc on July 30th, 2023 at 7:33 AM

Knowing how topsy-turvy recruiting can be, add to the fact that Michigan just received a commitment from Jacob; there seems to be growing positivity around Kentucky, about keeping the twins in state.

Well, Matt Jones is looking for listeners, at least:

"On Friday’s episode of Kentucky Sports Radio, Matt Jones reported that there is some scuttlebutt flying around that Kentucky has a real chance of flipping the twin brothers."

Seems like the fact that the twins are attending a high school that's 90 miles from Lexington has churned up some 'scuttlebutt'.  Code Red, indeed!

That's definitely...some radio host who was once an attorney saying stuff.  Whether any of it is true or not depends on how much credence you want to give to someone living somewhere sorta in the orbit of a college.

I'm dubious of a flip unless something more than "scuttlebutt" leaks out, especially if UK continues their fall back to the middle of the SEC East standings.

I’m under no illusions that a few of our commitments will be poached. I’m also quite certain we will poach the commitments of others. So it is in anno Domini 2023.

This hand-wringing snippet has something akin to a snowball's chance in hell. Even a blind hog finds an acorn but this is just plain silly at this time.

If you didn’t read the “article” let me explain….no wait, there is no time, let me sum up.

  • The brothers started playing high school football in Kentucky
  • Then they transferred to a prep school in Connecticut
  • Then they committed to Michigan
  • Now they are back in KY to finish their high school careers
  • They have official visits they COULD use to visit UK
  • A UK radio guy says their fans should keep an eye on this one

thats it. That’s the article, the “facts” and the reason you should have no reason to think there is any validity to any of this

I realize I am on outlier on here with this hot take but I'm one that doesn't have any issue on having to click on a link to go read an article.  Complaining about it is as silly as yelling at one's microwave to heat faster. This need for instant gratification is what will lead us to a society found in Idiocracy. And believe me, we are on our way there.

And as John U Bacon is famous for saying, "Some Michigan fans aren't happy unless they're not happy" just as Mgobloggers aren't happy if they aren't negbanging.

I’ll say this, I took my son on a visit to UK and the facilities are very nice.  The campus shows well, IMO.  The academics leave a bit to be desired though.  That would be a poor trade for those young men, but being closer to home is a wildcard.

Seems like it would take either a sudden need to be close to home (uh, they just spent a year in CT and it’s a military family iirc) or FAT SACKS OF CASH, imo.

I never begrudge a kid who takes the money, but the Smith family appears to me to think longer term and is going to want (and will earn) a lot more over the long term.

threat level:  low.

I have no idea if there is any truth or weight to this story, but.....

If these guys want to turn away from a school that has made the CFP two straight years and is becoming a bona fide title contender, and instead go to a school that will never amount to anything of substance on the football field, that will always be hovering somewhere around 3rd-5th place in its own division, and play in front of a fanbase that is indifferent to your existence and views football as a way to pass the time until basketball season....well then you've gotta do what you've gotta do, I guess.

I know there is something to be said for playing closer to home, but if your goal is to play at the next level (and I'm assuming that it is for the both of them), Kentucky isn't going to do that for you the way that Michigan can.

Thanks to PSM for summing up my thoughts well and saving me some typing! +1 Sir.

And what is with the concern trolling today?

Yes, recruits might do strange things. Commits might leave. But we may pick up some unexpected ones. And we will have an excellent 2024 class in any case.

Yes, QB play in 2024 is uncertain if JJ leaves. But we have a more-than-solid prospect coming in AND Davis Warren available as well. JJ also may decide to return for 2024.

Most importantly, THIS year is set up is possibly be another great one. I'm going to focus on that.

In state doesn't really describe it. They just moved there to go to school and play football. Kentucky has one of the worst classes incoming. They play in an unwinnable conference for them.

But, ok they can go if they like

Just some hack writer pissing in the wind and pretending he's keeping cool enjoying a lawn sprinkler.

Probably also petending that Kentucky football is relevant.  Nothing to see here.

I live in Lexington. Matt Jones is a notorious douchebag down here. Has been for years, but he’s the best content UK fans get so they put up with him. I would say he’s just trying to have material for his show and website.

I just don't see it...

Kentucky has ZERO chance at winning anything so how much NIL bag would it take to convince these young men who are not from desperate situations to go from UM to UK? Hard to imagine a number that big...
