Saturday Drinking, Tigers, Softball, Memorial Day Plans Thread
Mates,
It is Memorial Day Weekend and hopefully all or nearly all of you are enjoying some family and vacation time. Of note in the sporting world the Tigers got beaten like a rented mule, with two relievers giving up a combined 10 hits and 9 runs in 32 total pitches. You have to try to be that bad. Michigan baseball didn't fare so well either.
On a lighter note the girls softball team pulled out the victory 5-3.
Your beverage of choice this evening is...?
Your holiday plans this weekend include....?
Have a great, fun and safe weekend

Just got back from a day trip to Fire Island and I'm drinking an Alesmith Decadence. Tomorrow is hiking in the Gunks. Monday is the parade and flags on the graves.
I was on Fire Island last weekend. I bet it was very different today, between the weather (it was cool and rainy last week) and the fact that it is Memorial Day weekend.
We parked at field 3 near Robert Moses and walked 2 miles so we were right between the crowded Fire Island area and Moses. Perfect spot, few people around, only a couple of naked old guys, and a couple of naked young ones to balance things out.
Drove 500 round trip to mow a lawn for my folks. Drinking Gatorade with a rack of pork ribs. Feeling good
now that is dedication.
couldn't call a landscaper?
New to the area and I wasn't sure what I'd find in the 3' overgrowth. Luckily no weed, methlab or bodies.
way to fire up for the parents. and it's always nice to not find bodies or meth when you brush hog. that's a bonus.
Do you have to drive 500 miles round trip every week to mow the lawn or was this a special treat?

One time deal. More like brushhog than mow.
Confucius would be proud of you. Filial piety and all that
+1 for Confucius / filial piety reference - the Michigan Difference.
Must redirect +1 to Profs. Ernest Young and Albert Fuerwerker (RIP) and all of the other brilliant Sinologists who have called Ann Arbor home.
For all the staee and THE ohio trolls, Sinologists are people who study/are experts on China/Chinese things as opposed to someone who studies Las Vegas.
or just plain 'studies' which is likely a foreign concept to a school that will let anyone who can fog a mirror become a student.
I had Rhoads Murphey in my first semester at Michigan. At the time I didn't appreciate his stature in the field of Asian Studies.
Rhoads was a wonderful man. Fascinating background. Drove an ambulance in China during the war. Passed away a couple of years ago, he and his wife died within days of each other, in their 90s.
The class was pretty neat--"Asia Through Fiction." We read a bunch of novels about Asia, some by Western authors and others by Asian authors. I still remember some of the books we read (this was over 20 years ago): "Train to Pakistan," "The Execution of Mayor Yin," "Some Prefer Nettles," "The Guide," "The Chinese Bell Murders."
Like I said--I wish I had been a little bit older to truly appreciate being able to read these books and discuss them with Prof. Murphy in a relatively small class--probably 20 students.
What an amazing class, you were so fortunate. I never took a class with him, but I spent many hours listening to him in his office.
At least it wasn't 500mi around one damned oval the whole time, amirite!?
/kidding, I'm not a racing hater.
Up at the family cottage in Pentwater. Drinking some Americas. Taste like Freedom.

Pentwater is heaven on earth. Except during homecoming, then stay the hell away.

Agreed. I just moved back from Arkansas so I haven't been here in forever -- so even homecoming will be nice to see again. Only for part of one day though lol.

I'm drinking Founders dry hopped pale ale.

was in the 375th until late last year. prior to that he was at NMU too.
BBQ in Brunswick and Bells Ale.
Sitting outside listening to music. Had most of day to myself as wife took twin toddlers to pre-wedding event. It's been glorious! Had a couple of Mondelos.
Happy softball won. Hate that baseball lost to OSU. Seems like we lose to those fuckers in most things even if we lead them in the cup standings. Crushed them in softball but still not satisfying enough.

I could have worked Memorial Day, but I still get paid for it, just not in addition to time and a half. When I saw I could arrange four in a row off I couldn't resist.
Other than being really sick in December it's been years since I've had this much consecutive time, so I'm pretty excited to say the least.
Drinking some high west old fashioneds
Chef in Chicago so I'll be working all weekend. But Beyoncé is in town and like half the city left so it won't be a very stressful weekend (hopefully)...

Although I promised myself I wouldn't do too much outside today, the implosion orchestrated by Saupold and Wilson was cause enough for me to go immediately outside and mow the lawn while I tried not to say the things I was thinking about the bullpen.
As for the rest of the weekend, we're going with hamburgers, ribs, steaks and anything we can grill basically. I am trying to enjoy some alcohol-free brews as I still cannot drink pending medical approval, although this is a struggle for me. Sobriety blows.
because i would've been tempted to tune in. instead i just pulled up the box score on espn and then covered my eyes and ran from the monitor.
Free Bud Light draft at a wedding
Filling the pool and drinking some bota box Shiraz.
Getting the restaurant together for initial health inspection this week. Drinking Coors Light because I have no money left. Wish me luck.
Of restaurant? And good luck!
good food! Let us know where your place is located. When I'm up in Michigan I'll check it out.
Smoked a brisket and for the first time made pork belly burnt ends for some family to come over. Flags on graves tomorrow and then off to the pony races. Picked up some Rahr & Sons Ugly Pug Black Lager last night. Never had it.
How'd you do the brisket? I'm good smoking pork, but it's more forgiving.
There are a number of things to do brisket right. I would start with minimal trimming of fat, really only near the gap between the point and the flat, put the fat towards the heat on your smoker, 225-275 for about 8 hrs with consistent heat "if your lookin you ain't cookin", and finally don't let it rest or wrap with foil. let it cool so you can cut it and then serve within 20-30 minutes for best flavor. hope these tips help.
Edit - Forgot an important part. I have heard mutliple temps to pull the brisket. I pull in the upper 190s F. I have heard at 202, 195. I would suggest you pull when you feel comfortable, but not less than 195 or higher than 202. Happy Smokin'
Thank you!
Drinking some Founders Mosaic Promise after getting the yard in shape today
