Saturday's Outcome and Premature Schaden

Submitted by DoctorDave on

After the queasy uneasiness abated a bit in the 2nd quarter when M started looking like M again, and as that debilitating nausea began to recur in the 4th, no doubt the bilious presaging of doom regurgitated the realization: “We could actually lose this game. The horror.”

Only in the agony of victory did we realize we’d soiled our pants.

Since ‘freude insists that a little neurosis is good for the soul (of your psychiatrist), I’m curious as to your state of mind as reality forced you to realize you may be watching a Saturday sequel to The Horror.

  1. Little House on the Prarie *yawn*

No, I never thought it would be a good idea to sack our coaches after one especially poor performance. Additionally, what went through my head was "Thank God we're getting this game out of the way against UMass and not in Big Ten play"

Yeah, it amounted to a bad day at practice that counted as a win toward the final record.  With another softer game to get it right, then a lighter (hopefully) opponent to start the league but on the road so we can earn some wings there, before playing a better team at home. The schedule falls perfectly and this came perfectly within the schedule.

UMASS was positive in just the way you described.

People seem confused about what this term means. Schadenfreude is NOT anguish. It's the complete opposite - pleasure derived from others' suffering.  Needless to say, it would not have remotely applied to us as we watched the UMass game (though it may have for rival fanbases).

Actually, our friendly poster used the German word "Schaden", which means harm or injury.  Not sure what he meant by this -- maybe he thought people were harming themselves or taking out their frustrations on others prematurely?  I think our poster got a little too clever with his German.

Either way, nope, not me.  I managed to remain more-or-less calm throughout though there was considerable muttering and eye-rolling.

I grabbed the literal translation. As jmblue pointed out, it's the opposite of anguish. I received a harsh negbanging for doing about what the OP is doing, so I'll just give you the translation. I don't think the team is there, if anything, they should have gotten a good dose of humility from last Sat. game.  I'm coming to this week's game, I hope RR got through to the D. I would bet that he did.

schadenfreude

  1. Malicious joy
  2. Glee
  3. Gloating
  4. Spitefulness
