Santa Ono and Jim Harbaugh appreciation thread

Thank you Santa for everything to this point. The fortitude, the resolve and the steel in the spine coach Harbaugh has spoken about in the past!

Coach Harbaugh, keep doing and being you. You are truly a Michigan Man!

GO BLUE!

Could you imagine what a disaster this would be if Schlissel was still president? Thank God for not only having a great President of the University of Michigan, but also for one that understands just how important football is to athletes, students, alumni, and fans and followers of this great institution.

I believe there might have been a chant coming from the student section. But, the band was on the field doing the "Let's Go Blue" cheers prior to the game so it was very difficult to hear exactly what they were saying.  The F** Ohio chant was very frequent and audible throughout the game from the student section.

Santa is a dude that just gets it.  Know where your bread is buttered.  Support your Coach, players and fanbase.  Love leaders that just make the obvious move of support.

Where the hell has Warde been the last two weeks?  Why is he not standing up for the team and the coach?  Why is he not taking the brunt of the heat like a true leader does?  I've often thought Warde comes in for some unwarranted criticism on this board, but in this instance, he deserves all the opprobrium.  He's been all but invisible while leaving Santa and Jim to hold the line.

I agree. Where in the world is Warde? I haven't been for or against him with all the shenanigans that have gone on with coaches being hired/fired, but this is where your AD is supposed to be out front doing or saying something. Instead, the president of the University is. He's barely came out and said "Hi".

Also not a Warde apologist but on something like this you want the president out there, if they are willing. Don't believe anyone is suggesting that Warde should have penned this letter instead of Ono. The AD is always going to argue for the athletic program. The university president speaks for the organization as a whole.

That's fair.  But there's so much the AD could be doing to at least combat the narrative.  He and Santa could good-cop/bad-cop Michigan's response--he could be bellicose while leaving the circumspection to Santa.  If he's not willing to publicly fight, at least make a firm statement and answer some questions that would otherwise fall on the coach, even if it's just to say "no comment due to NCAA regulations, but I firmly believe our coaching staff has done nothing wrong and I stand firmly behind Jim."  His silence is giving the wrong impression.

As a person with some background in crisis management for large enterprises, I am utterly shocked at how poorly Warde has handled this.  The fact that we can't respond substantively to allegations being investigated by the NCAA doesn't tie Michigan's hands from saying some things.  Warde should have had multiple press conferences to reaffirm Michigan's commitment to exemplary conduct, to remind people not to believe everything they may hear online or on TV, and most importantly to take questions.

As to taking questions, yes, NCAA policy may not prevent him from answering, but then say that.  Say it again and again if you have to, but take questions until people are tired of asking them, answer where possible, and where answering is not possible, say that this is an ongoing investigation to which we are barred by rule from responding fully at present.  These sorts of press conferences are a perfect opportunity to remind everyone that they are hearing only half of the story, and to project confidence and competence.

Warde didn't do *any* of that.

Ono is a god-king, and why Ono hasnt already fired "I hate Harbaugh and I no longer want to defend my employer" Warde Emanuel should've been fired days ago.  Warde is a disgrace.  Perhaps even working behind the scenes to hurt UM.

The very last thing I would want to see from a University President is a knee-jerk response to media blather. I want a studied response. This is just one of the reasons I'll never be a University President. I'd have gone over, removed the nameplate with his title and replaced it with one bearing just his name.

I’m not so sure that Warde is trying to be a public face here. Seems like he is either acting as a peacemaker or a conduit or is tending to the other sports programs that he is charged with overseeing. An NCAA investigation may be above his pay grade as determined not by fans but his real bosses, the President and the regents. If any of the powers that be thought that Warde was ineffective or a liability he would have been gone by now. But he has now been AD spanning two presidents. They must think that he is doing a good job, which entails more than just tending to football and damage control.

I don't think so.  If you are a university athletic director and can't manage an NCAA investigation, you are in over your head.  If you are a university athletic director and let a crisis unfold without any crisis management until you are bailed out by your president, you are in over your head.  I could go on.

I'm not saying Warde is all bad, but he has proven himself unable to handle big events.  Ono would be involved in this situation no matter what, but the AD shouldn't be a wallflower.

Great to see Ono’s support!  Pathetic that the AD is freaking missing in action.  Still remember how Gene laid himself on the line for Urban.  Grow a spine Warde or borrow some steel from your coach!

Not knowing much about our President, I googled Santa Ono and learned that he is an accomplished biomedical scientist in the field of immunology and also a graduate of the University of Chicago.

As a scientist, my thoughts immediately drifted back to Jonas Salk and Francis Collins, Michigan legends in the field of immunology, past and present.  I take great personal satisfaction knowing we have a scientist at the helm of our beloved University.

The University of Chicago is, of course, inextricably linked the University of Michigan and its football program.  After all, our fight song describes nothing less than a valiant victory over an Amos Alonzo Stagg led U. of Chicago team.  Stagg's coaching tree includes none other than National Champion and master innovator Fritz Crisler.

Anyone else feeling the Ghost of Yost amongst us at this time of destiny?

I feel it and I believe.  Go Blue!
