Run the ball OSU D-Line snap count. They lack depth!

Submitted by TheDirtyD on November 21st, 2023 at 10:50 AM

They don't have much depth. Their D-Line starters play in games that are close play nearly every snap.

Essentially a 5 man rotation on the D line. LB's go the whole way. Just get big and wear them out.

ND- 65 possible snaps

DE- JT Tuimoloau- 65

DE- Jack Sawyer- 65

DT Tyleik Williams- 56

DT Mike Hall- 35

Last two year this was the same scoop story.

That OSU was tooled to compete for NC in domed stadiums with little concern for smash mouth between the tackles run defense or a run offense.

As such the same formula applies - wear them down with run game, keep Harrison tightly covered.

The dam will break. Eichenberg and Chambers have played a lot of football, so trying to entice them into the wrong gap is no easy task. Blake has shown great ability to get small and pop up in a gap you don't expect though. This should be a good chess match.

Holy smokes, that Tyleik Williams number is dangerous, and you can see they have been trying to unload him the last two games.  Basically any kind of sustained drives in the first half should lead to a completely gassed OSU d line in the second half.  On the other hand, sustained drives appear to be very difficult to come by against that defense.

I've been writing this for months: UM's best strategy for defeating OSU this season is the same strategy UM used in 2021...RUN THE GOD DAMN BALL.

OSU is better against the pass than they are against the run.  Rutgers ran for 230 yards vs OSU.  Notre Dame rushed for 150 yards in the 2nd half vs OSU.

Ohio State is still soft.  Their interior D-lineman are not deep, and not particularly good.  BURY THEM.

Wow, that's shocking. Their DE's played EVERY defensive snap against ND?!? Didn't we have games where starter-level DLs got 20-some snaps, maybe even <20. At very least that's the complete antithesis of the approach we've been rolling with for awhile, which is to rotate, rotate, rotate to keep guys fresh. But that just doesn't seem like a recipe for success.

Just think, we get into the second half, their DL is worn down, and all it takes is one sloppy play by a guy to give us a crease that our RBs will punish. Last year we saw what happened late when Edwards got a few creases. Hope that repeats itself...

Smash mouth is great, but we have to score points on drives.

We won the last two years against OSU because we never got down by more than one score, and we punted very few times.  A "body blows" running game that punts 3 times in a row like at PSU and UMD will get you nuked by OSU.

Not necessarily this Ohio State.  It is completely possible that they have some really good stuff ready for the first couple of drives that will get them out to hot a start, but against teams with any kind of pulse this is not an OSU team like 2018 who just lights it up all over the field.  Wisconsin is a pretty terrible football team and they traded punts with OSU for an entire half.

I am not saying Michigan can win this game in a Penn State-like fashion but neither does OSU really run out anybody not named Michigan State.

This is a significantly lower-scoring OSU team than the last two years.  They don't go nuclear that often.  They've scored 40 points only twice all season, compared to 10 times in 2022.  They scored 17 against ND, 20 against PSU, 23 against Indiana (!) and 24 against Wisconsin.   Their run blocking remains just OK, while their pass protection has gotten worse, and McCord's also pretty immobile.  They're certainly capable of big plays, but they're a lot less consistent than previous years.

I hope Henderson and Hinton are good to go.

When it is in the 4th quarter and we are up 35-17 with 7 minutes left in the game.  I want to see 7OL, 1TE, with Orji in the pistol with Kenneth Grant lead blocking for Mullins. A nice 12 - play 85 yard (all runs) TD scoring drive that chews up 6+ minutes of the game.

Then after the game, Moore can just hand over a roll of Charmin toilet paper to Cryin Ryan and walk away....

Mgoblog roundtable.  Brian (or Seth) suggested that Mike Hall might be injured so they are even thinner than you suggest.

But it's the game, people will crawl into the game if they have to.

That Notre Dame win looked good for a while.  It's still a good win but it definitely has lost its luster for OSU.  I don't think they are as good as their record indicates.  But we'll see.
