chengelis didnt lob many softballs and rr's answers were spot on. i still dont understand the whole end of the year captain thing, but im not complaining.
I think it's in an attempt to make the leaders the captains (regarding the weekly game captains). It's much like his attitude towards playing time, the best player will play regardless of his name or his star ranking; the hardest workers and best teammates will be captains that week. The end of the year captains are kind of necessary to fulfill a leadership/authority role that the coaches cannot due to their limited practice time with the kids. These end of year captains are the ones who will push for extra 7 on 7's, throwing drills.. etc.

what. You don't have to be a captain to take on a leadership role. From the end of last year it is pretty obvious that Minor and Graham have been extremely outspoken and taken on leadership roles for this team.
Leaders can't be simply appointed, either. Just to play devil's advocate, I think RR's system asks everyone to be a leader (or try) and then rewards those who actually led with the end-of-year recognition. I like it.
If they start winning bowl games it will be perfectly understandable
R2 has done well in Michigan getting the cruits who fit his system.
I agree on the MSU answer. I also like we would only be happy when we are competeing/winning championships.
I also liked the quote you mentioned about not being happy with 6-6 because it would mean they weren't competing for a championship.
My other favorite was when he mentioned that two spread teams played for the NC this year.
I am really, really glad to hear that RR is thinking along the lines of the 9-3 or 10-2 that it would take to compete for a Big Ten championship this year than just getting to .500.

The "MSU is beating U-M in the state" meme continues, bereft of any kind of context other than who gets more in-state players. No mention of the QUALITY of those players, type of player, or historical trends.

I don't understand the argument that "quantity" is somehow better than quality.....you want the best kids you can get, regardless of where they're from......if all potential recruits in the state of MI were one-legged cripples and MI is able to get the 10 best in the state, does that mean we won the recruiting war? It makes no sense.
MSU landed eight 4* players from MI last year.
UM landed one 5* and one 4* from MI last year.
MSU already has several 4* MI kids this year, including beating UM out for Gholston and Hicks.
MSU is getting many quality kids from in-state for the first time in years; UM also offered Baker, Norman, Sims, etc. MSU isn't beating out UM for every MI recruit, but UM is losing more MI recruiting battles to MSU than they have in the past.
...iirc,was the one who offered Baker,not R2. However Norman,Gholston an Sims your correct. As to the recruitment of Hicks...he might have been placed on the back-burner~ie Tony Willams. Michigan has bigger fish frying pertaining to db recruits.
Rich Rod continued to recruit Edwin Baker. Larry Caper is the one that we were "meh" about.

His coach essentially dragged him onto the MSU campus and put a jersey on him. As, I'm sure, happens to some Michigan recruits. I'm not going to consider MSU's commitment of him to be a coup or anything, just like Jeremy Jackson isn't really a "get" for Michigan.

This is true. Many around here want to ignore that, however. MSU will not be our punching bag like they have been for the previous 3+ decades.
Realistically, do you (redcedar) really give a shit where your recruits come from? If there is a badass recruit that your coaches and Rivals and everyone else is really high on, but he's from North Dakota, do you pass on him? I love Michigan, I was born and grew up there. It doesn't have the same football talent as other states. If Michigan fielded a team that didn't have a single Michigander on it, I couldn't care less if they won football games.
You had more 4 stars from Michigan. We had more overall. Would you trade classes with us? I'm pretty sure you would.
Dantonio is doing things the correct way at MSU. He's establishing a recruiting base and consistency at a program that was in desperate need of it.
I'm OK with Dantonio focusing on MI and OH for now; he's building an identity for the program. The national recruiting will follow if he can continue to win and make bowl games consistently.
All other things being equal, grabbing guys from in-state has some advantages. Your back yard is a more reliable supply and chances are the one or two guys that you get from Florida aren't going to establish a pipeline for you. The guys from close by appreciate all of the traditions are probably a lot more sure of their decision and won't get homesick. I think that the freshman year is particularly hard for the southern players. Plus, it is nice to deprive your biggest rival of that talent.
Yeah I saw that and immediately felt my blood pressure spike. I would settle for winning more games next year over winning some b.s. "Michigan recruiting battle." Unless someone hands out a trophy for Most Michigan Recruits on a roster.
Can someone please explain to me why this is a big deal? Per Rivals since 2002 Michigan has gotten the #1 player in MI every year, with the exception of RoJo in 2007, and then went out and recruited Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, California and now Florida. State CAN'T recruit all those places like we do so they have to pick up players from the state of Michigan or they wouldn't have anyone on their team. So yeah overall they get more players from Michigan but who cares? I am perfectly content getting the #1 in Michigan and then guys from other states. How is a 4* from Michigan somehow better than a 4* from Ohio? I bet I'll be just as happy watching Arizonian Craig Roh plant a QB as I was watching Michigander Lamarr Woodley. Someone please enlighten me.
You're right - it's not a big deal. I can't imagine that anyone would watch a Michigan game and think "Yeah, that was a great play. Too bad he's not in-state." Some people just want to argue about everything.
I would love for us to get every high level recruit out of Michigan, but as long as we’re making noise down south I’m content. After all they’re the ones winning Championships.
With, I believe, two exceptions (UM and OSU) in about the last twenty years, the schools winning the NC are warm weather schools with mostly kids from warm weather states. I know Oklahoma is sorta borderline weather-wise, but they do get a lot of kids from Texas. I don't have a lot of faith in coincidence, but this would be too mind-boggling a coincidence even for someone who did.
So, I am all for RR getting more kids from down south and letting MSU brag about "dominating recruiting in Michigan." My belief is the same it has been for about five or six years now: dominating the Midwest in recruiting will get you a lot of 9-3's and a chance to lose to USC on the road in the Rose Bowl a few times, but it doesn't really get you to the point of being a bona fide NC contender on a yearly or even semi-yearly basis.
Let MSU "dominate instate recruiting." The only record that matters is the one at the end of the year that is determined on the field.
One thing he said caught me:

The one thing that scared me about the RR hire was that he might springboard to the NFL or what have you, if the opportunity came, which isn't something I want in our coach. Michigan should be a final destination. The culmination of an exceptional career. I know it COULD'VE just been talk, but I don't think so. I feel like Michigan coaches should become something of an institution within the school.
Maybe I'm just old fashioned, but I feel like even if Lane Kiffin were to win an NC at Tennessee, and then used it to get back to the NFL, there'd be less mention of him in school history there than there is of Gary Moeller here.
I don't think the NFL will be calling Rich Rod anytime soon after last season's debacle.

NFL wouldn't take a spread option type of coach anyway. If they do it means he has won a TON of games and has been able to diversify the offense enough to placate the pro-style types.

Exactly. RR is not a pro style coach; therefore, he will probably never head coach in the NFL.
That's not really the point, though. The point was more that he views Michigan as an end destination. Not another stop on a coaching tour. If a coach left Michigan to coach ANYWHERE else, NFL, other school, whatever, it'd bother me.

RR is recruiting specific players to fill the holes in the offense. Clearly speed and skill is the priority right now. Florida (among other schools in the south) breeds speed, Michigan doesn't. I think you'll see RR start to recruit In-state a lot harder once he has his pieces in place on the offensive side of the ball. Did you see how fast he landed Gardner? He gets the kids that he really wants from In-State

I think RR can't wait either. I am looking forward to just meaningful steps in the right direction. The offense holding on to the ball. The kicking team holding on to the ball. The defense, taking the ball more than the offense gives it away. And of course I am praying that Tate (insert your fav QB here)rain man's the playbook looks like a world beater out there. Hell, I would be happy with him Forrest Gumping his way as long as they win.
