Rose Bowl & Rooting Interest This coming week

Michigan wins vs OSU & Big Ten Title game: playoffs!

Michigan loss vs OSU & OSU win in the Big Ten Title game: Rose Bowl

Michigan loss vs OSU & OSU loss in Big Ten title game: The West would be a lock for the Rose Bowl?? That would be terrible.

There has to be a back door into the playoffs even with a loss to OSU? Maybe

What are the rooting interests this weekend besides the obvious? What are those options to back into the playoffs with a loss? What are the odds of a NY6 bowl if the team from the west wins the Big Ten title game?

Hell the West still has 4 teams that can win it, that’s crazy for the last week of the season.

How is the Rose Bowl participant picked in a non CFP year? Let’s take the CFP position out of the equation for a minute, how does Michigan get selected over MSU, Wisconsin, Iowa, etc? Is there not criteria that decides the selection?

I believe if the conference PAC-10 or Big 10 don’t have a team in the playoffs then it’s the Confrence champion of the conference, if one of the conferences has a playoff team then the Rose Bowl gets to pick who they want from that conference. We would definitely get the nod over MSU, Wisconsin and probably Iowa.

Oregon and Utah will most likely be playing again for the PAC-10 and a trip to the Rose Bowl in a few weeks.

From the Rose Bowl website -

Should a team from the Big Ten or Pac-12 be selected to go to the College Football Playoff, the Tournament of Roses will traditionally select the next-highest CFP-ranked team from that conference. There is, however, a caveat to that clause in the contract.

“If the next-highest ranked team is in a ‘cluster’ of teams, meaning there is another team or teams from the same conference ranked within several spots of each other, the Tournament of Roses will select the team from that cluster that will result in the best possible matchup for the Rose Bowl Game,” said Rose Bowl Management Committee Chair Scott Jenkins.

In a cluster situation, the Tournament of Roses will take into account factors, in no particular order, such as: the last time a team played in the Rose Bowl Game, head-to-head results, regular season schedule, overall record, opponents played, past playoff or bowl appearances and performance, and historical matchups.

It should be noted that it is the strong preference of the Tournament of Roses, Pac-12 and Big Ten Conferences, that the highest-ranked available team in each conference be selected as the replacement team.

So basically, as long as we don't get shut out by Ohio State, our larger fanbase + 15 year Rose Bowl gap would most likely get us selected over MSU, and we'll most likely be a higher rank than Wisconsin/Iowa

I think the one interesting caveat I'd add is: what happens if Michigan beats OSU but loses in the Big Ten Championship game? Does the Big Ten get left out of the playoff? Does OSU sneak back in? That would raise some REALLY interesting questions for the committee. I would have never believed that the Big Ten could get left out of the playoff this year but I suppose it's possible in that scenario. Thoughts?

That would be a roller coaster of emotions, on the one hand we beat the buckeyes, on the other they still end up in the playoffs.. This is why they need to expand the playoffs, Power five champions, highest ranked non power five, and two at large.

8 total teams, then conference championships matter.

I would think the 2016 precedent would be in play.  With Oregon getting de-pantsed by Utah last night, I think a 2-loss OSU gets consideration for the playoffs.  Alabama didn't really impress against Arkansas; so it seems to me that they must win the SEC to make the playoffs.  (Sadly, if they do, then we will see Georgia and Alabama both make the playoffs.  Don't think it will happen that way, hopefully.)  An unbeaten Cinci would be seeded ahead of a 2-loss OSU (and wouldn't that be a source of hilarity!), as would a 1-loss ND (gag), but I don't see a 2-loss Champ from the other Conferences bumping the Schmuckeyes.  Perhaps if Oklahoma was a 1-loss Big 12 Champ; it would depend on the nature of the Michigan-OSU game.

Obviously, the B1G Champ goes to the Rose Bowl, regardless of where OSU ends up.

The bad news is that Michigan would be no better off than if they lost to OSU, and possibly even worse.  No Rose Bowl (as would happen if OSU wins out and goes to the playoffs), nor the number 2 Bowl if a 2-loss OSU misses the playoffs.  And, who knows where they end up if they get ambushed good in the B1G Championship Game?  All that said, I'd take a win over OSU in a heartbeat, consequences of the Championship Game be damned.

I think B1G would be out. It's not that crazy to ponder either. Wisky is playing really good ball now.

Conversely, prior to yesterday, if both MSU (haha) and us beat OSU and MSU won Big Champ game, then I think 2 B1G teams would have made the final 4. MSU would probably have been #2 - and our only loss would have been to #2 team on the road.

No way a 2-loss B1G team makes the final four unless there's incredible chaos. All 4 would have to happen:

- Cincy loses

- Okie St loses

- Okie loses

- ND loses

If somehow that happened, most likely both GA and 'bama would make it, plus B1G Champ and...2 loss Michigan/OSU I guess, if The Game is close.

No playoffs with a loss to OSU, almost guaranteed.  A 2-loss team has never gotten in.  I could see a 2-(close/road)-loss SEC champ getting in at some point, if there's enough chaos elsewhere.

The Rose bowl typically selects the highest CFP ranked non playoff team but are not necessarily bound by that. Presume we will be picked if OSU gets into the playoffs.

MSU losing to Penn State would strengthen our potential Rose Bowl position. With the added bonus that it would mean MSU losing a game, which is always good.

More importantly: Beat Ohio.

My rooting interests this week is M over OSU and PSU over MSU.

If Michigan wins against OSU I'm gonna be all "THIS IS A TEAM OF DESTINY" and will assume we win every game after that.

I don’t understand your OSU loses in B1G conference championship scenario. If they lost there then Rose Bowl would pick the highest ranked B1G team. Presumably Michigan or OSU still. Or are they required to take the winner of that game?

My rooting interest is the folllowing:

1. Michigan win

2.  Ohio loses

3.  Moo loses

4.  Notre Dame loses

5.  Slippery Rock wins

6.  Wash U in St. Louis wins

7.  No rain or snow

If it was 2024 and we lose to OSU. with a 10-2 record, Michigan would be in the 7th spot in the 12 team playoff spot. I don't know why the playoff committee did not just break the old 4 team contract and start the 12 team playoffs this season  If there is a deserving team left out of the playoffs like ND jumping Cincy in the playoffs, may be the playoff committee will expand the playoffs next season instead of 2024.
