rob f Appreciation Thread

Just wanted to say it is great to have a Mod who is involved in the discussions on a regular basis, and always makes solid and/or humorous posts.

Having a Sunday evening Old Fashioned - cheers to you, rob f!

So when rob f first got word that he was going to be a mod, he was all like BMOB (Big Man on Blog)....

....but the first few days must have been like (rob f with backpack)....

....then the days rolled into weeks and rob f was thinking what have I gotten into....

....and we all hope, as does Mrs rob f, that it does not turn into this....

As undeserving as I feel of *SOME* of the accolades, thanks for the kind words.

While we're at it, though, I need some help:

After the death stare I got from Hotel Putingrad last night,

I'm going to need a new identity, new Userpic, and maybe even some cosmetic surgery (looking at you, MGoUserDocs!)

(edit: shit, he tracked me down already!!)?

If I have not said this before, I will say it now and on the record - thank you for stepping into this role. Though I do still occasionally help out, having someone else take the lead on this and do so well, I might add, has been not only helpful to my own mental health but to the quality of the board.

Cheers! Not only is he a dang good mod, but he’s a splendid chap in person. Maybe now that he’s retired he won’t rebuff my offer of free tix to a basketball game on a snowy weekday evening. Missed your tailgate hospitality this year Robert.

Thanks to you and the other Mods also.  Mainly because for me sometimes I can’t tell with some of the topics whether this is a sports blog or the NY TIMES.  Until, someone like you steps in and nukes the nuke-able posts.  Thanks again.

Well I posted on the Freep forums for years, starting the night that Konstantinov was injured in 1997 because I was trying to find information about him.  Then when they shut those down we moved over to WorldCrossing and posted there for years until it shut down.  Information was a lot harder to come by back then, unlike now when everyone knows everything 5 seconds after it happens.

There was a rob f that posted those places all the time and I'm pretty sure he had the same user pic, so I'm guessing it's the same guy.  :)

I just saw your posts, Jamie H, and yes, that "rob f" and I are one and the same.

Those Freep Forums were my starting point too---I initially started out on the Freep as "R Bob" for a short time but soon changed it to rob f. The Freep back then had separate sports forums for fans of Michigan, the Tigers, the Lions, the Red Wings, the Pistons, and the spartans, besides forums for current events and politics, if I recall correctly. I dabbled in both of those briefly (political "discussion" was already awful enough back then) but eventually posted mostly to the Tigers and U of M Forums, somewhat also the Red Wings (and I remember you from all three of those). Occasionally I'd also venture into the Lions forum mostly to lurk, and even sometimes visited the spartans forum, for trolling purposes only.

Like you said, the Freep shut down all their forums, which were on the Worldcrossing platform, and the core groups of Michigan and Tigers fans both opened up their own separate Worldcrossing (WX) sites. A lot of folks, like both you and I, belonged to multiple forums on the Freep. While I tagged along and stayed with that main Lions group on a completely different non-WX platform (they eventually merged onto a tap-a-talk platform), I very soon completely lost track of nearly all that group of Red Wings fans forever.

Some 14 or 15 years ago, WX changed from a free site to a paid membership site, then suddenly a year later gave notice they were going to shut down entirely.

By then I had begun lurking here on MGoBlog but stayed mainly with the remnants of the original Freep Michigan fan group (do you remember "Linesman"--- he worked for MichiganBell/AT&T and was a high school football referee/linesman, thus his nickname); when eventually WX closed they found a platform by latching on to that same very active Lions tap-a-talk forum as a separate sub-group, enabling them as Michigan fans to stay together. I had become a moderator there while we were still on WX and continued for a few years on the newer site but eventually got burned out. Probably the biggest reason leading up to my decision to quit modding there was a badly deficient policy there on dealing with politics----ugh.  It wasn't so much the long-term members as it was an outside group from another college football fan site who infiltrated and brought along their bad habits; up until then we more or less went by the unspoken rule that politics were to be left at the door.

I still stop there and post somewhat infrequently; you'd probably recognize a handful of them from the Freep forums days and even a very few there who posted back on the Freep Red Wings forum. MGoBlog, however, became the primary sports home for me within a couple years after I initially signed up here in 2010.

As for that group from the Freep Tigers Forum, they stayed intact on WX, but scattered widely when WX ceased to exist. Many at first formed a group called "The Tigers Clubhouse Gang"; it still exists but barely--- among other things, the website is awful to navigate. Most of that group now is on a Facebook private group called something along the lines of "The NPGWH Tigers FanXPerts". I used to visit their page to lurk, up until the last year or so when beefed-up Facebook security procedures drastically restricted non-member access to FB pages.

The Tigers Clubhouse Gang is now down to about a dozen members and nearly extinct now as a result of what the pandemic did to the baseball season. Because of this, I'll probably soon finally begrudgingly join Facebook, if only to be able to stay in touch better with that long-suffering group of fellow Tigers fans.  Dedicated self-induced martyrdom, I suppose.

Yes I remember some of those places ended up as political cess-pools.  I drifted away for the same reason.  I think some people were posting simply to see how much they could upset other people and it just wasn't worth it to end up mad every day over stupid stuff that wasn't even sports related.

Now I just save my political anger for Twitter.  That is much better right? :)

Anyway always good to run into a familiar poster! Those Freep forums were a lifeline for me.  I had just moved from Ann Arbor to Seattle, WA, and getting any kind of Michigan sports news out there was impossible.   Back then, even getting all the Michigan football games on TV if you were out of state was a challenge, let alone any specific news about the teams.

I Remember when Rob use to post with only a few points. At first I thought this job was like being a mall cop but after this year, it may be one of the toughest jobs around. I hope they pay you a bit for monitoring this blog. But thanks for shutting down all those posts that were sinking south fast.
