Risk Day 32 - Welcome To Alaska! Enjoy The....Polar Bears And Ice Fishing?

Submitted by Michigan CFB R… on April 23rd, 2020 at 11:22 AM

What a fascinating map. We don't have many buffered territories (I count 2 of them), but our "empire" stretches from Texas, around the west coast, up to Alaska, and back down around New England. This is what you might call a "possibilities map." There's so much we can do....it's just a matter what we want to do.

But more on that in a second. I'd like to take this opportunity to celebrate the biggest prize of last night...Alaska! The Buckeyes have held onto this strategically critical territory for all but 3 turns since Day 7 (and on 2 of those 3 turns their ally Stanford held it). As a reminder, Alaska connects the Washington and Boston College territories, so it serves as the gateway between the Northwest and the Northeast. It is critical both as a means of traveling from one side of the map to the other, and as a buffer for protecting your territories on either side. In other words, this is a BIG deal.

So let's learn a bit about our new hosts....

Alaska was the 49th territory to become a state, joined by Hawaii later the same year (1959). Its state motto is "North to the future," and it boasts the tallest mountain in the USA with Denali, as well as the next 9 tallest mountains in the USA (California's Mount Whitney enters the list at #11). Alaska is also by far our biggest state. It is 1/5th the size of the continental U.S., and it's bigger than Texas, California, and Montana combined. Finally, while polar bears are mostly in the Arctic, there is a population of around 4,700 polar bears in Alaska.

Anyway, back to "possibilities." We've got a lot of them. We're butting up against Texas (hi TAM!), we still control most of the west and touch every OSU territory there, and we also have a bit of a foothold in the Northeast and the easternmost part of the Midwest. We can't get too crazy or, as you guys have noted, we'll stretch ourselves thin and could get seriously hurt, but MAN there are a lot of tantalizing options out there.

You know what that means...we need to keep the momentum going! We had almost 5000 power last night (just a 2-star away) and we still have the most players (though the Buckeyes are closing the gap). Y'all are doing a great job of playing consistently and recruiting your friends and family (I see you MGoParents recruiting your kids....well done), so keep at it and let's fly by 5000 and aim to get to 6000 sooner rather than later. Agreed? Agree. Go Blue!

I'm pretty sure the mountain is still called McKinley -- they just renamed the park.  But, McKinley was an Ohioan, so, I say, Denali it is!

Went there for my honeymoon (and did the cruise).  Other tidbits the locals boasted about in Alaska...

> If you overlay Alaska onto the continental US with the east boarder aligned with the east coast of Maine.  The Antilles islands would stretch all the way to Omaha, NE

> If you split Alaska in half into two states, Texas would be the 3rd largest state....

> They have, by far, the highest ratio of pilot license per capita as for most that is the only means to travel from town to town....

> They have been mining coal in Alaska for over 80 years.  By comparison, if you took a train car that was full of coal and removed 1 chunk of coal, the rest of the train can is relative to the amount of coal left in the mountains in Alaska

It is a definite buck list for everyone to truly appreciate Alaska.....

Oh yeah, just got bumped up to a 3 star.....!!

Why is AK a separate territory from the UWash territory? Shouldn't AK be like ME, VT & NH: a state with no D1 schools so they are absorbed the nearest school on a county by county basis? Who 'owned' AK at the beginning?

you actually can see a tiny bit of russia if you get out on the last couple of islands in the western bering sea.

alaska is the coolest state.  i can see re-locating there in retirement, at least for the summers.  love that place for its beauty, hunting, fishing, lots to do.

At $7mm, Seward's Folly cost the U.S. approximately two cents per acre. Blue Ninja's multiple posts on the Day 31 summary make so much more sense today.

Thanks for the great update.  Even though I can (and do) look at the results on collegefootballrisk.com, I always look forward to and enjoy your risk updates here.  You are relentlessly upbeat and optimistic which is great for recruitment.  Good job.
