Red Wings Begin Quest to End Playoff Drought Tonight Against Luke Hughes & the Devils

It will be interesting to see if the moves Stevie Y made during the offseason will help the Wings take the next step.  The East is going to be tough again this year with a strong test right out of the gate against Luke and the Devils.

The turning point last season was that road trip to Ottawa where the Wings got pushed around.  Steve was intentional about adding size, some Cup-winning experience in Compher, and hopefully some scoring with DeBrincat.

What do you think?  Do we make the playoffs this year?

I'm not in the playoffs or bust camp. Detroit has a lot of ground to make up, and that's hard to do in one off-season. I do think they should get more points in the standings, even if they finish in the same spot in the division. The Atlantic is brutal.

East should be closer this year than last.  Boston has taken a major step down, but probably still playoff team.  Tampa has serious injuries to start.  Caps chasing Gretzky, not playoffs and Pittsburgh might be at the end.  Agree with hockeycast crew that you can see a path for the Wings, but it’s a fairly narrow one.  East has had lots of mid-90s team miss the past few years, so Wings could be a lot better this year and still miss.

The young guys need to keep improving.

The new guys need to gel.

Of course, goaltending

Basically, keep getting better. Even if they don't make the playoffs, I want to see that next year is the year.

And if they make the playoffs this year, even better

Yeah, it's crazy, right?  It's almost like Stevie thinks the fact that captained multiple cups on the ice and built another multi-cup winner from their front office gives him some air cover to differ from the video clip watchers who constantly chirp about the little fancy-skills guys who make for fun highlights in their clickbait articles.

I have been telling my friends next year is the season I’m expecting things to take off, so I’m resigning myself to low expectations this year and just improvement over last year. I think next season is a year we can expect to see some magic, based on the trajectory of the rebuild and my belief that Steve can only do right

I don't have high hopes. Wings added a lot of averageness to the roster, so they can be fake competitive. I'd rather have them suck for a while longer, so they can actually get some high end talent on the roster.
