Recruits At The Game

Submitted by MaizeBlueA2 on September 12th, 2021 at 12:13 AM

Just a friendly reminder of some of the recruits at the game versus Washington tonight.

5* (CB) Domani Jackson - clearly there is an opportunity to play CB NEXT YEAR on this team. And clear the DC is going to put you in a position to make plays...you just have to make them. No reason why you'd watch today's game and think it hurt.

5* (OT) Josh Conerly - huge OT from Washington, raw, athletic (former RB and a basketball player). OL like to run people over. What did you see today that hurt Michigan in the eyes of an OL?

3* (OT) Jackson Pruitt, 4* (OT) Amir Herring, 3* (OG) Dylan Senda and 3* (OG) Mark Nabou - same thing. Time to maul.

5* (DT) Walter Nolen - he ain't coming, plenty of opportunity, but next.

However, 4* (DT) Deone Walker and 3* (DT) Kenneth Grant - two other DT prospects. This game showed a need, but also that you're going to be used in multiple ways. Positive if you're a DT.

3.5* (LB) Joshua Josephs - he just watch Aidan Hutchinson's best game and Josh Ross fly all over the field. In an incredible atmosphere. He should be saying sign me up.

4* (LB) Lander Barton - see Josephs.

These are ALL huge wins tonight. The crowd was ELECTRIC!  Power five win over the Pac-12. New young assistant coaches with energy (and are relatable).

THIS WAS A HUGE WIN TONIGHT!!!

The only two recruits who could leave thinking "ehh, I need to see a lot more," are 5* (QB) Dante Moore...who isn't even in this class, is from the state and is probably behind McCarthy on day 1 (but we still need in a MAJOR way), and 4* (WR) Dane Key who we need, but we have young WRs and some guys already in this class.

The huge problem is this isn’t 1986. You can beat a team from the MAC and another team that lost their first game to an FCS level team, but you aren’t going to beat any squad with talent running that offense.

Did you see Oregon’s offense!?  Now that is what it takes to beat talent. We look 1,000 mikes away from having a capable running AND throwing offense.

I realize people are dazzled by offensive fireworks, but "you aren't going to beat any squad with talent running that offense" is simply false.

Last week Georgia beat Clemson without scoring an offensive touchdown. Clemson has talent. Iowa beat Iowa St today with 173 yards of total offense. Iowa St has talent. Colorado threw for 89 yards and damn near beat A&M. A&M has talent.

There are all kinds of ways to beat good teams, and different opponents require different game plans. Controlling the ball, getting turnovers, avoiding penalties, special teams play, making key stops, taking advantage of opportunities.

I suspect by "talent" you mean "aOSU or 'bama" - and that might be true.

Oregon's offense was amazing to watch today, but it's not the only way to win against "talent". If aOSU ran the ball better they could have won.

Now do Ohio States offense.

They went for over 600 and lost. They threw for like 450. OMG but you have to pass!

So what were you saying about offense? Throwing the ball?

Your logic sucks. Win the game. If OSU could've beat Oregon the way we beat Washington, pretty sure they would have taken it over losing pretty.

But, go off!

I forget what year it was, but I recall a game in which Wisconsin beat us badly (late Hoke or early Harbaugh maybe??) running on almost every play because we simply couldn’t stop it. It was painful to watch being on the other side and just incredibly frustrating knowing that they were going to run and we couldn’t stop it. But they won easily. Like we did today. Why risk throwing (possible int, no gain on incomplete, etc) when we were consistently gaining huge amounts of yards on the ground. We scored over 30 just running and the game was never really in doubt beyond the first quarter.

Man, I remember that game. Awful.

If I recall correctly, it was Jonathan Taylor running behind a gigantic and mauling Wiscy OLine in 2019. Michigan could do nothing to stop it knowing it was coming. Demoralizing as a fan, one could only image the impact on the team.

I get the elements of the fanbase that want the style points. Notre Dame threw the ball a lot today and beat Toledo by 3...

I personally quite enjoyed the mauling versus what will probably turn out to be a pretty decent Pac 12 defense.

Win The Game.

ESPN  had this close - the Washington D beating the Michigan O. Michigan beat that defense into submission. By the end of the game Washington knew they were running and couldn't stop them. I'm all for having a passing game but why put the ball in the air when you can run it down their throats? Clearly plenty of room for improvement but I"ll take this every time.

Welcome to the internet…

While I understand the concern/frustration around the non-existent passing attack, I’m choosing to subscribe to glass half-full perspective.  We dominated one MAC and one PAC-12 team by simply running the ball down their throats and playing solid defense.  If only to boost morale and establish a mindset, that has value.  Now if it stops working and we can’t adjust down the line, then everyone’s concerns become valid.

Let’s also not lose sight of fact that Harbaugh: (a) went for it on 4th and Goal at 1; and (b) called fake punt on our own side of the field.  He showed some commitment and balls there. I also wondered about the decision to let Moody attempt a long FG, but I think that was also to send a signal of confidence.  Not nominating anyone for coach of the year, but look at the performance—and coaching—all in balance.

...and by the way, that's not even CLOSE to the full list.

But the point is, to all of the ones whining about how that game hurt recruiting and no one other than a RB would ever want to play at Michigan.

...WRONG!

Crowd looked pretty electric on tv, for those there, how was it? I know the first quarter they were struggling hearing big time. Did it stay relatively lively or taper off as the game wore on?

It was loud well into the 4th Q.  It was not a loud as UTL 1, but it was as loud as UTL 3.  I even saw a Blue Hair stand on the bench and start jumping.  Someone had to politely ask him to sit down so he did not throw his hip out.  Sec 20 & 21 rows 10-20 was electric all night.

The UW Pep band was inaudible.

I feel like it is not mentioned enough that Dante Moore was born in OH & has grown up an OSU fan.   I see recruiting sites talking about the stud 5 star QB in "Michigan's backyard" but very little discussion that this a massive uphill battle for an OSU fan.

I 100% agree with your OL assessment, sign up big boys to maul all day in this offense.  I am surprised Michigan had this much success especially up the middle against this D, it was a masterclass in OL play

*** EDIT ***

I am also with you on the D recruits should be hyped because that was a LOT more Junior Colson & Rod Moore than I thought I would see in a game this early in the year
