Recruiting Question and Antonio Kinard

Submitted by Frank Drebin on

While looking at both Scout and Rivals, I noticed that Scout has us listed at 11 commits for 2011. The one that stood out to me was Antonio Kinard. Now, I realize that he is at Hargrave Military Academy playing post graduate football, but I wasn't aware that the scholarship was being held for him while he does this. In a past UV, Brian stated that UM has taken Military Academy kids (including Chris Perry), but I wasn't quite sure how their commitments went as far as failing to qualify, but keeping a scholarship for when they do qualify. I am also confused on why Rivals would not be saying he is a commit if he was a sure thing to come to UM. Can anyone offer any insight on this type of thing?

First, Kinnard has been balling at Hargrave. I talked to one of his coaches, and he's been doing very well. He's also doing great in school. Hargrave has a really tough schedule and discipline, so it's not meant to be easy.

Second, Michigan's coaches haven't 100% decided if they're going to "re-offer" him. Antonio's plan is to head to Michigan once he's done, but we'll have to see what the coaches decide and if everything is in order academically.

If Kinard is looking good, I'm all for bringing him on in this class. He'll essentially be a RS frosh who didn't use his RS. If we wanted him last year, why wouldn't we want him with an extra year of bulk and experience? It's not like we have too many LB's in this class.

I believe since he did not sing a LOI they will continue to consider him a commit until either Michigan withdrawls it or Kinard decommits.  I remember there was another player that was like this for two years or so, can't recall his name at the moment, was a D lineman, Slocum maybe?

If you don't know what a Fuck Lion is, you need to find out quickly. Read the following facebook self-interrogation from Marques Slocum and it will tell you all that you need to know. Trust me, you will not be disappointed!

A related question....    whats the current word with....

1.Demar Dorsey? He didn't enroll at Lousville. Is he in the picture next season, if high school grades get in order?

2.Austin White?  He is off the team but is he still in school? Did he transfer out yet?  This one seems odd b/c he was quite good and wouldve thought he'd have went to another program by now, but maybe CoachRod is playing hardball with him to get him to grow up.

3.Conelius Jones?

Thanks in advance to anyone in-the-know.

why...    isnt it because he still hadnt finished the proper high school coursework...ie.. hasn't graduated from high school yet...and then if he does within the next year, can then attend college and/or qualify ?

I don't know whether or not Dorsey could qualify, but I'd be shocked if he would be willing to come back to Michigan.  If I showed up at school and wasn't even allowed to enroll after being promised a scholarship I would go high and right and seriously look into legal options.  Going back to the school wouldn't be my number one choice.

I understand there were some serious issues there that Michigan may not have had knowledge of, but I doubt Dorsey thinks that way.

1. Demar Dorsey is now enrolled at U-M and he will be starting at Free Safety on Saturday. Practice reports say he could be the best DB to ever play at Michigan. He would have been in sooner, except he spent much of the summer helping Twitter reconfigure their source code. Demar also got special permission from Rich Rod to finish a project he was working on to invent nano-TVs (these will replace HDTV in four years) and crack Diebold's voting system (as if it takes a genious to crack an Ohioan's programming).

2. Austin White left the team to go to a super-secret cornerback training facility in the Swiss Alps, where they surgically installed swivel hips and superhuman leaping ability, then put him through a grueling training regimen that replaces everything in his head with coverages and whatever you need to fill a degree's worth of LSA bluebook exams with. He is projected to return this week and replace James Rogers, as long as his body has properly adapted to the Dilithium implants in his legs.

3. Conelius Jones is going to take a bit longer to see the field. He has been traveling around the country with David Cone as "The Indefatigable Coners," pairing David's unparalleled rap battle skills with Conelius's angelic singing voice to convince recruits to come to Michigan. Most recently, they were seen in Florida, using perfect verse to convince Clinton-Dix and Hart they are better off starting at Michigan than being indefinitely medically redshirted (and deprived of scholarships) at Alabama. Following this year's recruiting season, Conelius will be be sent to a special clinic that creates genetically enhanced linebackers who can use The Force, but only the good side (as opposed to the Sith Training Center of Lima, Ohio, which produced Darth Hawk, Darth Laurinaitis, and Darth Jones).

I know someone at Fork Union who plays on the football team, and they said Conelious Jones quit the school and went back home. Don't know what this means, but just thought I would share this with you guys.

A local paper from nearby his home said he left in late August. It also stated the following, which I found very interesting.

However, Brown said that Jones was “about 30 points shy” on his SAT score, which prompted him to enroll in prep school.

“He doesn't have to go to prep school. That was just an option for him,” Brown said. “He may have decided to just retake the SAT and get the necessary points to go on and enroll at Michigan.”

It will be very interesting to see if the ship has sailed if/when he gets his SAT in order.

Quitting at anything, much less a prep school that would let you get a year of playing football under your belt while getting your scores up to Michigan levels, doesn't seem to fit into the overall program culture Coach Rodriguez is trying to install.  I'd say Jones is done.

Leaving prep school to just retake the test makes sense if he is attempting to enroll in the spring. It's common at other Universities, just dont know if it is allowed at UM. But why go to a prep school if the only thing holding him back was a couple questions on the SAT?

In a past UV, Brian stated that UM has taken Military Academy kids (including Chris Perry),

Perry was not a prep-school case.  He went to Fork Union as a regular high school student, for four years.
