Rashod Bateman 2019 highlights

Imagine a maroon-and-gold Nico Collins and a QB who actually throws to him, and that's basically Rashod Bateman. Bateman is a great route-runner, knows how to get open, and also brings down the contested balls. Who will we match up against him?

I believe Gray had drawn the short straw however the rumors of Dax getting time at CB must mean if Gray is overwhelmed, D.Brown will switch Dax over to see how that works.  Either way going to be a tough assignment.  If we shutdown their running game, which I expect we will, then giving up a TD or two to Bateman yet holding their total team score say under 24 pts. I believe would be a win.

That all depends on what we see out of Milton as well, even if Minnesota is only spotted 24 points. I think Michigan can weather the storm without Nico pretty well. There's definitely talent there, and Bell, Jackson and Sainristil all acquitted themselves very well last year in the time they were given.

We know very, very little about Joe Milton at this point, aside from the fact that he's athletic and can throw the ball 80 yards with minimal effort. Minnesota is going to stack the box until Milton proves he can hit his receivers consistently. Maybe he can already. But if he has first game jitters, or just hasn't improved from what we saw last year, then Michigan is in for a dogfight.

24 points?  LOL!!!  That number is a thing of the past!  Only teams with a very poor offense will be held to 24 points or less.  Teams like Rutger.  If Michigan's defense holds Minnesota - who has a pretty good offense - to 24 points, the Little Brown Jug is under no threat about moving to Minneapolis.

Today's college football is about scoring points.  If Michigan is to be successful this season, they'll have to score 40-45 points/game - regardless of opponent.  The old-timey 20-17 defensive slobberknockers have gone the way of the Dodo.  And starting against Minnesota's offense means that Milton has to be ready to go on the first snap.

This is the only relevant information we're going to get out of this season, has our staff figured out scoring points is the key to winning football games? If they have, the future is bright even if this weird year doesn't go very well. If they haven't the future is bleak, even if this year goes better than expected.

Blanket him with Gray and Dax.

Their other receivers:

WR 2 - Chris Autman-Bell - 28 rec, 371 yds, 5 tds - 3* recruit (#844 overall)

WR 3 - Demetrius Douglas - 14 rec, 157 yds, 0 tds - 3* recruit (#764 overall)

TE1 - Jake Paulson - 4 rec, 51 yds, 0 tds - 3* recruit (#920 overall)

I doubt any of those guys fill in the production of:

Tyler Johnson (who is now on the Bucs) - 86 rec, 1,318 yds, 13 tds

He could have also benefited from being next to two NFL receivers. I'm sure he will be good but not sure he will be as good as either Bateman or Johnson, unless Minnesota has suddenly turned into WRU. No way to tell which way he lands until game day.

Ibrahim does seem pretty solid though but we do return our entire defensive line. Should be a good match up as long as what we saw from Minnesota last year was the real deal.

I believe you might be talking about bracket coverage. It's something that's usually a good scheme to try to contain one great wide receiver.

I learned about bracket coverage during years of watching teams sometimes shut down Calvin Johnson of the Detroit Lions.

Though consistent bracket coverage means a defensive coach has to commit to game planning around a specific wide receiver.

Don Brown can't be trusted to do those things. He often seems to want to stubbornly run his schemes and not let an offense dictate what he should probably be doing.

He didn't seem to game plan very well for KJ Hamler last season and that helped Hamler win the game for PSU.

Hopefully Don Brown will use some bracket coverage.

So now Michigan is worried about Minnesota recruits/players?  Don't we have a bunch of 4-stars and a 5-star in our dback field?

If we are worrying about guys we didn't even offer, then we have serious scheme/player development issues.

Bateman was the #61 WR in his class.  He barely made 4* by a micron.  Georgia offered very late, besides there late attempt after most likely striking out on whoever they did, his offer list was mid 3*.

I am by no means stating that Bateman sucks.  I am actually commending Minnesota and Row The Boat for not only developing him, but having a scheme to take advantage of him.

But my point still stands.

It would be easier to be dismissive of Minnesota’s talent if they hadn’t done something last season that Michigan has been unable to do since Harbaugh’s first season: win a bowl game.

And before anybody dismisses Auburn as a worthy opponent for Minnesota, the Tigers beat Oregon, TA&M, Mississippi St., Ole Miss, and Alabama.

If michigan had Minnesota's schedule last year they most likely go 12-0...

everyone was bitching about how easy it was before the season started, and big surprise they barely one their first couple games of the season against mediocre teams then coasted to their first 9 wins against even worse competition.. then lost to iowa and wisc

We may as well just forfeit now, right?

We've never had to deal with being down a starting CB against a good WR.  Ever.

Game over, man.

Nico Collins is a weird comparison. It’s not just height difference either. Bateman’s style is totally different; he’s much faster and dangerous in the open field. Nico is second to none on jump balls and is a different type of deep threat. Bateman is very dangerous though; he’s a hell of a challenge for a inexperienced DB group. Dax Hill has the speed to cover him but has had like a week of reps at CB so that’s dicey as well.
