Rank your Fanhood.
I thought it might be interesting to see how people weigh their loyalties to the various teams they follow.
If you want something a little more concrete, rank the teams you follow in order of how happy you would be if they won a championship. I'm thinking specifically pro and college big 4 sports teams, but feel free to throw in national teams or non-revenue sports teams as well if that's your bag.
For me:
1. Michigan Basketball
Spending the late 90s and early 00s as the only UM basketball fan in my school was tough, but that makes the current success that much better.
2a. Indiana Pacers
Indiana kid's gonna Indiana. I spend about 5 minutes as part of my morning routine seething about the fact Reggie Miller(and Austin Croshere) never got a ring, but I have that slight disdain for pro sports holding be back from calling them #2 alone.
2b. Michigan Football
I had the great pleasure of getting into sports right after UM won the football title in 97, so I haven't gotten the good pleasure of enjoying a championship as it happened.
4. Indianapolis Colts
Of course the team I care least about is the only one that has won a championship while I've been following them. All hail St. Peyton. All hail St. Andrew.
5. Any team representing the USA in international competition.
U-S-A, U-S-A!!!
Share yours so that I know who to downvote reflexively if you like teams that I don't.
Both, with Mos Def included
I really only live and die for any given game when it comes to Michigan Football. Any game they lose, whether its against Alabama or Akron, will crush me.
Michigan Basketball, it really depends on the game. Losing in the tournament is crushing to watch, but because there's a lot of games in the regular season, and one game doesn't necessarily ruin the whole season, I can live with some losses in the regular season. Unless its against MSU or OSU, of course.
Being from Tampa, I'm a casual Bucs and Lightning fan. But I haven't lived there for a while and the Bucs have sucked so badly for so long, it really doesn't ruin my year if they have a joke of a season. Which they have for nearly every year for the last decade. Watching the Lightning reach the Cup Finals this year was fun to watch, but again, it didn't really ruin my week to watch them lose to the Hawks.
Couldn't give a rat's ass about the Rays, but I did used to LOVE the Braves back in the mid-late 90s. When they were winning 15 straight division titles and had the epic pitching lineup of Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz. Don't know why I loved them, but it was back before Tampa got its own team, so maybe that was it.
1. Michigan football
2. My kids' teams
3. Michigan basketball
It may seem weird that I put Michigan football over my kids' teams but sometimes it's better for everyone if parents aren't that emotionally involved.

- University from which I received undergraduate and professional degrees (competitive nationally in only one men’s sport in which it has won and lost some NCAA championship games; generally strong and making NCAA tournaments in some minor women’s sports)
- United States National Teams in all sports (from archery to wrestling and everything in between – yachting is now called “sailing” so that falls “in between”) and Army, Navy and Air Force when they're not playing each other or any of the other college teams I root for)
- Boston Red Sox (never thought I'd live to see a World Series championship, and now I’ve seen three in this century, though it looks like another 86 years of famine might be on the way)
- San Francisco Giants (never thought I’d live to see them win the World Series after 1954, and now I’ve seen them win three in five years)
- Michigan and Syracuse athletics (loyalty to family members)
- Arsenal FC Gunners (not sure that I’ll ever see a UEFA Champions League championship for them, but back-to-back FA Cup wins has kept me somewhat satisfied)
- England’s National Football Team - The Three Lions (loyalty to family members)
- New York Giants (NFL) (loyalty to my father; lucky to have seen them win a few Super Bowls)
- New York Rangers (NHL) (loyalty to my father; lucky to have been alive and watching in 1994)
- New York Knicks (loyalty to my father; lucky to have seen them win in 1970 and 1973; doubt I'll live to see them win another NBA championship)
- Average Joe's Dodgeball Team (loyalty to the late Patches O'Houlihan)

3. USMNT
The Azzurri
(Reasonably quick cool story bro: in '06, the nightmare scenario presents itself -- USA v. ITA in group play, Italy in position to knock the USMNT out with a win (they would go on to win the World Cup that year, you may recall. Last time they won was '82, the year of my birth. I also share names with the key players in both Azzurri World Cup wins in my lifetime.) Anyway, as a fan of both, the only acceptable result was a draw--though gun-to-my-head, I would've definitely chosen a U.S. win. But courtesy of an *own goal* (I give you Italy! Arguably the only team more frustrating to root for at times than Michigan football!), the U.S. eeks out a draw and my teams enjoy a near-miss on their way to their respective destinies.
5. Lions. (Blech. But yeah, 5.)
6. Tigers
7. Michigan Men's Basketball
Kronk Fighters of Yesteryear (lotta great fighters from this area, so I'll group them together)
9. Michigan Hockey
10. Patriots (I admit, but for Tom Brady and a few relatives in Mass, this is kind of a bandwagon pick. But I like Belichick's one-man Butch & Sundance routine, the professionalism of the team, and now they're almost underdogs after this deflategate nonsense (my opinion only).
Pistons (they tie for 10th. I know, it's cheap, but for old times' sake I'll cave. '89-'90 was my earliest really well-remembered Metro Detroit area major sports championship and it was super fun to watch. I had the Isaiah height chart, etc., etc.

The Nats are favorite team of the moment becuase its summer and I live in DC. But all time would go something like this:
Knicks (blech)
Mets
Michigan football
Michigan basketball
Jets
Giants (football)
Nats
Eventhough I don't like basketball as a sport that much and I hate the NBA I would absolutely lose my mind if the Knicks ever won the championship.
And I don't know why but I would rather see Michigan win the NCAA tournament than the 4 team playoff. Is that weird?
Hmmm its goood
