PWO question

Submitted by Yessir on

Briefly, what does the PWO athlete get?

Another question is I knew a couple of pro athletes and their diet was crazy good.  Players like Uche and Bush(edit: meant Walker not Bush) come to mind of players that need to gain weight the right way.  Can Michigan set up the diet and provide for the diet within the NCAA rules?  These guys must need 5k+ clean calories a day and not from Taco Bell and McDonalds.

One last thing, if the Owenu news is correct, that is more than just getting Owenu at this point, it seems like a momentum boost for us too.

If you really think about the amount of time and effort, Rashan and his mother have put in the recruiting process, how could anyone possibly believe he would go anything but Blue??
He has spent numerous visits since his junior year, to Michigan, and compare that to 1 weekend at Clemson, and it shouldn't be close. They want a place they feel the family vibe, great academics, great coaching, friends on the team etc. etc. I am very firm, he goes blue now more than ever!!!

Your first comment seems to be applauding how diligent Rashan and his mom have been about this process, yet your conclusion seems to be "so they'll simply pick the school they've been to most." That doesn't follow logically for me.

This is partially incorrect.

PWOs are charged for the training table.  Technically even the scholarship players are charged, but it comes out of their room and board charge -so they pay nothing.  Walk-ons pay out of pocket.

Also, insurance. A walk on is required to have insurance.  If they don't have a personal policy, they will be placed on the university's policy and possibly charged for it.  The university is allowed to pay for their insurance without violating NCAA rules; it's the school's decision.

So really all a PWO does insure you a spot on the 105 person roster.

If nothing else, they did at least liberalize the rules and allow the schools more discretion when it came to providing meals rather than stick with the old "one meal" crap. I believe the schools can also provide incidental meals too - pregame, practice and various other situations - although the rules with regards to PWOs are less clear on those particular situations.

PWO are full fledged members of the team with full access to all nutrition counseling, strength and condition, clothing swag, and academic services. They may even get hot babes like scholarship players, but I doubt it.

During training camp, the entire team eats together.  As soon as camp breaks, the walkons are no longer allowed to eat at training table.  If they are following a diet, they have to self monitor while they eat in the cafeteria.

Meals at the hotel the night before the game, pre-game and post game meals are for everyone who travels, including walk on.

City Ballers did bring up Owenu playing next to Gary on the DLine and immediately referenced the 85 Bears. I'd have to agree with that comparison. Edit: I have no idea where this post was supposed to land.
