Purdue's Drum

Submitted by wildbackdunesman on
Like salt getting rubbed into a wound, Purdue's "worlds largest drum" reverberated through the stadium after the game. It was even more menacing in the concourse under the stands. The noise came in blasts through that cavern and just pounded through my soul making my heart bleed. Which is why I hate to admit that as tacky as it looks at times, it is a pretty cool drum.

who was heavy into the band culture at Purdue told me that they once had a band alum from Africa come and show them photos of a bigger drum. Engineers in the band within two days repaired the Purdue drum so it was bigger, but the acoustics went to hell on it. True story.

Not sure how Purdue's band sounded at the game, but listening to them on BTN almost made my ears bleed. Anybody else experience the same thing?

This can not just be me, but I just can't come to terms with that being the worlds biggest drum. Sure, it's big, but not what I had in mind. There's gotta be a drum somewhere in the world thats bigger. Maybe i'm wrong, but I was expecting much bigger.

After the game the Purdue band marched down Hoover to the Natatorium. Is this a common thing? I have been to at least 35 Michigan games and have never seen this before. I was on the verge of taking a stick and putting it in the spokes of the drum. My irrational hate of Purdue is up there with Black Heart Gold Pants feelings about Northwestern

I can't hold back anymore. Seriously, the hook-n-ladder in 08, the onside kick in 09, Danny Hope and his retarded mustache f@#king with OUR Rich Rod, and now the biggest drum. Where is my dog? Must...kick....something.....but I liked that cat, oh well. The way I see it, any or all of the following things needs to happen: 1 - Rich Rod sends Jay Hopson to North Korea to obtain nuclear arms. Brings them back. Goes to Purdue. Now we have a true Big Ten again. 2 - We take that big drum and voila.....a new rivalry trophy game 3 - Rich Rod takes the kid Reckman hit to Danny Hope's house at 3am and says, "Hey Woody, are you condoning the hitting of players? Wanna take a shot yourself?"

I was thinking maybe we should get one, it was pretty cool. As for the band, they did a fantastic halftime show, the highlight being a great rendition of 'Thriller', where the band members suddenly all started acting like zombies at the appropriate time. In my opinion their band accounted themselves quite well.

I'm an Michigan lifer, but my oldest kid is a Purdue freshman in mech eng and tenors player on the Purdue drumline. Needless to say, we now see some Purdue games. The irritating thing about the BBD is that in a stadium, the timing of the beats is always off. The bigger the stadium, the more the beat is off. Last Saturday in Michigan Stadium it was off by more than we've ever heard before. Still the AAMB is a pretty darn good band.
