Probability of a meteorite hitting South Bend during Saturday's game

Like many of you, I am hoping for an asteroid to eliminate both Notre Dame and Ohio State from playoff contention this Saturday.  Based upon a couple of assumptions (assuming that all major meteorite impacts after 1800 would be known; that anyone within the tree-blowdown radius of Tunguska would've been killed), there's approximately a 0.000000000008% chance of that happening.  Here's to hoping.

So You're Telling Me There's a Chance?!"

As much as I need to hold back the vomit in saying this, I hope Ohio beats Notre Dame. From a "what is best for Michigan perspective," if Michigan and Ohio State are both undefeated when they face each other, and Michigan loses, Michigan has a better chance of making it into the four team playoff, just as happened with OSU year.

Michigan has two football games this year.  If they lose to OSU, they will be 1-1.  They will not be in the playoff over anyone else with even a half-decent résumé.  (If Michigan had lost last year, they would not have been in, for the same reason).

OSU got in last year because they were 2-1 -- beating ND was their catalyst.

I think a fluky win by OSU is best for U-M.  Let's hope for a one point Buckeye win in which ND does the following:

- shanks a 24 yard field goal off the upright

- muffs a punt inside their own 10 yard line

- throws a tipped pass which turns into a pick six

Don't hate me but this is a matchup that, in the past, I have enjoyed watching Notre Dame lose.  It was fun watching John Cooper's teams beat up on Lou Holtz's teams during that home and home they played in the 90's.  It was also kind of fun watching them lose the two bowl games they played later as well.

And don't get me wrong.  Both schools can suck it.  I'm glad one of them has to lose.  But I think a good scenario was kind of like last year's meeting.  Where OSU is favored so badly that the announcers are anticipating having about 25 orgasms over the unstoppable Buckeye offense that we're about to witness....and they end up looking waaaaaaaaay below expectations.

I proudly raise a middle finger to both squads and hope the victor wins 6-0.

I read some power of positive thinking book that had quantum in the title back in 1994.  It said that if an entire football stadium of people thought about levitating a pickup truck in the middle of a football field they could do it.  I haven't done the math, and don't think I could, but it seems like if we got enough people focusing on this meteorite thing, it could happen.
