Predictions for the next 4 days?
1. Tomorrow afternoon, M holds a press conference at which Hoke announces that he is resigning effective the end of the season. He gets to walk out on his own terms to some extent, add a good amount of intrigue for the game and possibly give his players the shot in the arm they have desperately needed all season. If I were Hoke, I would rather do this than go through the "evaluation" a day or so later.
2. No announcement, we play OSU and lose, likely badly. I expect that Hackett would conduct his evaluation in short order and that Hoke would be relieved of his job in a Monday or Tuesday presser.
3. We win the game. I expect that Hoke is still gone, but the evaluation takes more than a day or so, as there will be some entrenched factions arguing for one more year, and Hackett will need to look like he is at least being thorough.
Assuming that it's 1 or 2, what is the timing of the new hire? Other than a schiano, every other likely coach is going to be busy completing their nfl season or preparing for a bowl game. Unfortunately, I expect that this means that we may have a vacancy for 3-4 weeks in December.

I will eat Thanksgiving leftovers.

no more Peppers avatar??

will eat many turkey sandwiches in the next 4 - 5 days while watching lots of CFB and NFL FB. Then back to the grind next week...not complaining though.

Well, after losing at home to Seattle, the 49ers probably wont make the playoffs. It's highly unlikely the NFC West will get 3 teams in, especially with the Lions looking like they could win 11 (!!!!) games and the Packers winning the division along with easier schedules for the Cowboys and Eagles to close the season. Also, the NFC South is going to waste a playoff spot on a team with a losing record...Jim may be available to speak sooner than we expected
November 27th, 2014 at 11:56 PM ^
The lions win couple with the 49ers loss makes it unlikely that the 49ers make the playoffs. Would Jim speak before the end of the season? Probably off the record, at a minimum.
November 28th, 2014 at 12:21 AM ^
The 49ers were at a 34% chance to make the playoffs before tonight's loss. I'd say they will dip into the mid 20's after the computers update their chances.
Edit: I was wrong. It dropped them to a 12% chance.

I'm at the point where if UM doesn't get Jim/John Harbaugh then maybe it'd be better to have Hoke come back for one more year. I'd be very pessimistic about next season of course (who will be the QB?) but I'm not sure about Schiano and I don't want Miles (too old, weird, etc.). I'm also not sure we should jump at some random coordinator...I'd feel pessimistic about the next 5 years. The OSU OC might be great but who'd be his QB? There's NOBODY, we'd be back at 2008 I fear. Neg away, but I just don't know and I don't trust Hackett (though I trust him much more than Brandon).
November 28th, 2014 at 12:23 AM ^
I don't agree having Hoke back another year would help--this is true in almost any circumstance. However, I do think the frequent assertions that we should look hard at top coordinators, like Herman, are weird. It just seems like the position requires a lot of management skills and experience distinct from coordinator responsibilities, and that it would be quite a gamble to bring on anyone who hasn't had a HC job before.
November 28th, 2014 at 12:25 AM ^
and I did say "maybe".... I think Hoke must go but unless it's Harbaugh coming in we're going to be VERY uncertain about the next coach and his staff...at least I will be.
November 28th, 2014 at 3:32 AM ^
CarolinaWolverine: let me help you with the "not sure" items in your post.
No Hoke for next year; it would gut both this and the next recruiting class.
Schiano sucks.
No random coordinators.
Candidates with track record of success only.
Hope this helps...
November 28th, 2014 at 2:31 PM ^
No Hoke for next year, absolutely correct unless all you've got available for this job is Mike Debord...then he wouldn't be so bad imo. I exaggerate with that example but not by much if Hackett whiffs on Harbaugh.
Obviously we'd like a candidate with a track record of success but who is that? You have to include age with that which disqualifies Miles for me...maybe not for you I guess. I'm assuming Mullen doesn't come north.
November 28th, 2014 at 4:26 PM ^
Why is nobody talking about Mack Brown, who boasts a .778 win% from his time at Texas and has engineered not one but TWO successful major turnarounds at UNC and UofT. He's also 6 or 7 years younger than Steve Spurrier, and he'd be walking into an excellent situation at Michigan in 2015; the roster will be good everywhere except at QB and WR [and we really should be more appreciative of coach Hoke for this, given what he walked into] and the schedule will be very favorable. He is ethically respectable and has a record as a very good albeit not truly elite head coach. He seems to me to be the perfect candidate to hold down Fort Schembechler until an attractive younger candidate is ready to take over.
For what it's worth, he has said [as of October] that he will make a decision about whether he wants to return to coaching in December.
November 28th, 2014 at 8:13 AM ^
Someone from this camp is going to have to explain why they believe it is acceptable that, if we fail to land a Harbaugh, that we would naturally be forced to live with Brady Hoke for 2015 because I don't understand why anyone would believe that necessarily. That is, unless some people have hyped up the possibility of Jim or John so much that anything else to them would be confirmation from the university that this level of on-field performance was OK, which is something I personally don't see.
November 28th, 2014 at 2:35 PM ^
I guess I've been just trying to figure out what UM's realistic options are...and they don't seem numerous. Aside from Mullen who is even a possibility? I don't see Mullen leaving the SEC so who? The OSU OC would be great but our fan base would have to be patient, which we haven't been recently.
November 28th, 2014 at 9:06 AM ^
Well I guess its your right and luxury to say how you 'dont' want Miles... but know, that he is very worthy of being the Michigan coach... he has the personality to deal with the big seat here, and is a great coach.... the spotlight is so bright here, that one needs to be what many would consider 'a prick' to be coach.. Bo was.... Jim is... so is Les. I'd be ecstatic if we got Miles... but I would be concerned about WalMart nation trying to burn it down with nonsense.
November 28th, 2014 at 10:18 AM ^
Sorry to hijack here but why would JOHN leave the Ravens? He has a great thing going, and as far as I know, his contract isn't up yet.... so I am genuinely confused all the talk of JOHN.

EVERY FOOTBALL COACH IN AMERICA EMPLOYED.
AP: In the lastest news in college football, it sems every single football coach in the entire country is employed, and there is nobody, with the inexplicatble exception of Brady Hoke, that is availale to take the open Michigan job.Sourses within the AD confirm that AD Hackett is trying to contact teams in Canada, and Karjakistan to see if they can find a new coach for 2015, but at this time, there seems to be a genuine shortage in the industry. /s

and Hoke will be fired a couple days after the team banquet (which is on the 8th, I believe)
November 28th, 2014 at 12:00 AM ^
I forgot about that. I guess Hoke will likely be here until 12/9 or 10, as it would be pretty awkward otherwise. I guess that's ok as it minimizes the time between his firing and the possible hiring of his replacement. Still, it would make for a really tough 10-14 days for all of us super fans.
November 28th, 2014 at 12:25 AM ^
To be fair, it will also be pretty awkward for him and everyone else attending the banquet to know that Hoke is out the door in a matter of days.
November 28th, 2014 at 9:25 AM ^
For some reason Florida and Muschamp have gotten excessive kudos for how they've handled things. We know Hoke is stubborn, OK and also not brilliant, but he also sees the writing on the wall. After The Game, he could just say "for the good of the program blah blah blah I'm stepping down as head coach."
November 28th, 2014 at 9:45 AM ^
He wont get paid if he quits and he needs the money as he'll never coach again.
He has a significant grocery bill

First off, Hoke has made over 12 million in his time here. After taxes and agents, he made $6 million in 4 years. Let's say he lives fairly large, but not excessive, by suburban michigan standards - at most he spent $1 million. Guy has $3 million banked, and that's assuming that he didn't save a penny before this job. He is fine.
Oh, and Hoke will be HC of a D1 school within 2 years - I could see him doing really well at another Mac school. Remember how many people said that RichRod was done? He is doing fine these days.
November 28th, 2014 at 2:39 PM ^
GREAT! I don't see him doing that unfortunately. He'll have to be told to leave.
November 27th, 2014 at 11:57 PM ^
We'll sweep RPI in hockey and crush Nicholls State at Crisler.
November 27th, 2014 at 11:59 PM ^
I can't see any way that Hoke would resign before the game. What would this accomplish?
Just win! All that matters right now is Saturday.
November 28th, 2014 at 12:02 AM ^
Where did anyone suggest he resign before the game Saturday?
November 28th, 2014 at 12:07 AM ^
I'm wrong. OP didnt say it, but I've seen it mentioned around here as an Earl Bruce type thing. I beleive Everyone Murders originally suggested it about a month back
November 28th, 2014 at 12:02 AM ^
When you say "a Schiano" what other coacHes are you referring to besides greg Schiano ?
November 28th, 2014 at 12:14 AM ^
I guess only schiano, but I would out in this same category any coach at a lower tiered school that will be going to a noname bowl, as they could easily leave at any time.
November 28th, 2014 at 12:04 AM ^
That the performance tonight "wasn't acceptable".
Michigan loses by 20 Saturday. Hoke is fired Monday morning. Shortly later that same day Harbaugh is fired by 49ers because the owner wants him out. Harbaugh announced as Coach Tuesday.
Five days I know.

Les Miles is done for the year except for an insignificant bowl. Hoke will be fired, we will reach out to Harbaugh. We will either wait for him if he tells us he is interested or we will hire Miles over the next couple of weeks.
November 28th, 2014 at 12:14 AM ^
please, the coaching "tree" is defunct. We need a new direction.
November 28th, 2014 at 12:18 AM ^
I agree but this fan base cannot take it. I can easily see them hiring Todd Graham, however, I think people would be very disappointed.
November 28th, 2014 at 12:21 AM ^
Todd Graham would be a great hire.
November 28th, 2014 at 12:22 AM ^
might be a good coach, but does anyone know? He's jumped around so much, so quickly that he seems to be an opportunist, not someone who makes a commitment. Seems like lots of the ND fan base wants Kelly fired, maybe he'd be available?
November 28th, 2014 at 12:24 AM ^
Kelly is too much of a dick. I don't want.
November 28th, 2014 at 12:42 AM ^
Have you seen Jim Harbaugh coach? At what point are Michigan fans going to stop being moralists in their hunger for a great coach? I guess if you have Michigan connections, being a dick is ok.
November 28th, 2014 at 2:32 AM ^
Harbaugh's coaching ability makes his personality tolerable (except to the 49ers apparently). Kelly isn't half the coach Harbaugh is, other than a very lucky 2012 Notre Dame hasn't really done shit under him.
November 28th, 2014 at 3:52 AM ^
What coaching tree? Hoke is from Carr. Les is from Bo. So is Moeller, Bill McCartney, Carr, Jack Harbaugh, and Don Nehlen.

IMO there is only one logical reason Hoke has not been let go yet. The decision has not yet been made.
I truly believe if we win Saturday Hoke will be retained at least until the bowl game. And if he wins that he'll be brought back next year.
There is no other reason to delay the announcement that makes any sense to me.
November 28th, 2014 at 12:32 AM ^
Isn't he owed an extra million bucks if we let him go before December 1? If so, we got a.million reasons to wait to can him .....
November 28th, 2014 at 8:42 AM ^
mGrowOld: I tend to agree with your assessment of what is going on with the decision making process, regarding coach Hoke........
