Pre-Fiesta 'Can't Sleep' Thread

Submitted by Caesar on December 31st, 2022 at 3:26 AM

Ahoy, ahoy.

It's 3 AM, give or take a time zone, and I just can't sleep in advance of this contest. The gym is closed, my friends are long knocked out, and if I play chess through this weariness I'll just get frustrated. So I figure I'll shoot out a thread and invite others to dump their thoughts in hopes of getting a few Zzzzzzs.

- Michigan should be able to run the ball, right? The thing is that Corum makes the right cuts. He doesn't have Edwards' speed, but he really knows where to go. Edwards got much better at this, but what if some deficiency gets exposed when he's the main man? Nah. Edwards found the hole against OSU. Mullings will get some short yardage work. It'll be fine.

- Watching the game with some friends. Their kids might be there. If I get ejected from his house, what are my backup venues?

- Michigan already faced a Big 12 defense this year with better talent. That would be Ohio State. This means the team grinds it out until the second half but still wins comfortably. Okay, that feels better.

- If Michigan wins, I'm simply going to LA. I have no idea how I'm going to make that happen with the work schedule, but I'm going. And the whole irresponsibility of that is causing some anxiety. Should I buy the flight now?

- Really worked up about potential injuries in a win. Olu or something like that. Oh God, please not Olu. Too many injuries already. Or a linebacker. That would also suck so hard.

- I really want to see Ohio State get annihilated, but then, I want Michigan to administer another beating. Seth is all like, "Chances that Michigan does the same thing again is less, given the talent disparity," and so I'm fine with Georgia destroying Ohio State. Michigan proved what it had to prove, already. I'm fine with it, I think. It's fine.

- My drink of choice is a Monster Ultra Blue. However, that stuff is really bad for my teeth. What am I going to drink?

- I think JJ is the Goddamn Truth, and I have no idea why he's not hitting on long balls this year. He can do it. Also, I like him. I like that he's happy and gives money to charity. I never say mean things about him during the game. I just yell non-stop, positive encouragement.

- How long until my basketball shoes have been broken in, properly? Am I putting too much mileage on my body by playing basketball?

- Has Anthony been hurt all season? Where has this dude been? Just really had high hopes for the WRs this year. With Brian doing his 'CJ 1st round" prediction, and then Bell back from injury. And where did Roman Wilson go? WHERE IS ROMAN WILSON?

- When Edwards scored his first running TD against Ohio State, there was a moment I was standing and yelling, and then there was a moment where I was sitting on the couch, and I don't know what happened in-between, and I'm thinking I may have passed out. And this may be an event that triggers me getting the boot from my friends house. On the other hand, I'm bringing the food, and I forewarned him about the volume.

- It has just been so long. It has been a long time, and I really want this to happen. I want Michigan to win so bad.

- Wolverine Devotee just got married yesterday (12/30). Congrats to that guy. If it wasn't a Michigan-themed wedding, I'd be surprised. Weirder things have happened, but I'd still be surprised.

Okay, time to try to sleep again. Go Blue.

Seth is very smart but also wrong. Michigans talent is clearly exactly what we need it to be to beat up on OSU.This idea that still seems to exist that we are punching above our weight’ or some other nonsense is such BS. It was clear last year who was better, and it was confirmed this year. Check out Reddit and their fans expect to be owned again next year. This isn’t a fluke. We are a better team than them. I would be nervous of course if we played again but I also would expect it to go similar to the last two meetings.

Thank you. "Any given day" applies to any team that we play and a team with the talent that OSU has is no different. If Michigan played them ten times, no doubt that the Buckeyes would take a couple.

But I'm not sure how many times the fly has to hit the windshield here for people to understand that the car is the better bet in that interaction.

I agree with all that, and I enjoyed the OP's rambling post, but it sure would be nice if OSU's recruiting regressed a little bit.

How good has it been for them? Here's their 247 ranking by average player score for the last several years:

2023: 3
2022: 3
2021: 2
2020: 5
2019: 3
2018: 1
2017: 1
2016: 3
2015: 6
2014: 4
2013: 3
2012: 7
2011: 6
2010: 18

FFS. You have to go back to around the time of tattoogate near the end of the Tressel years to find a year where they were outside the *top 7*. (I'd planned to go back only a few years but it was like falling down a flight of stairs. I had to see more.)

Recruiting matters. But coaching and culture do, too, as shown by the past couple of years. Wouldn't it be nice, though, to narrow the recruiting gap? Unless their coaching and culture (which are intertwined) improve, Michigan could run up the score well before the end of the game.

Meh

It's not just about rankings, it's about balance.

Biggest miss on the recruiting sites is they don't take into account the distributions of starzzzz in the classes.

OSU was recruiting studs on the D-line and in the secondary under Meyer. Since then, their D-line has been pedestrian (no more Bosa brothers or Chase Young) and looks like secondary has just been meh.

They can keep recruiting the 4 best receivers in the country every year.

So yeah, they are still loaded, but it's not the same.  Bama and UGA on the other hand, oof- those are different monsters we need to slay.

Lmao at the “can’t sleep” tag. I, too, cannot sleep though maybe I just woke up a bit too early (three hours ago) after having a night imbibing in hazy IPAs. Gym opens soon; sauna is in my forecast.

I also can't sleep but it may be because my 6 month old is sick and doesn't want to sleep for more than an hour at a time right now.  I'm hoping for a nap during the Alabama/Kansas St game.

My golden retriever must have been excited about the game too, because she woke us up before 5 this a.m.  oh well, I can't blame her I guess.

Go Blue, everyone else who's up!

I hope you got some sleep.   It’s the $&$damn college football playoff.   Don’t watch the game anywhere you can’t scream.

it’s just at sunrise here.   Going to walk the dog in the fog…before we beat the frogs.

I just woke up at 446 am pacific time....dammit!

game is too early to ski and return home so I have a sprint workout planned for my high school  daughter.  She has just enough time to recover before her next basketball game.

Also going to kill some time by playing racquetball with the wife.

going to be a long day.  Wanted to sleep in until 8.

Yes, you’re putting too many miles on your body playing basketball, if you’re over 30.  Hoops is a young man’s game. Trust me on this one.

I dreamt about the game. It took place in a tunnel that led out to a glacier that was filled with crevasses. TCU got out to a good start, but one of their players fel into a crevasse that dropped onto the ocean where there were orcas waiting. I woke up at that point because I didn’t like that TCU got off to a good start and the orca part was a little intense.
