Potential 3rd year O-Line comparisons
Hey, first post. Slow day; thought I'd summarize how some comparably high talent / low experience Drevno coached OLs have done in the past several years. I threw in Hoke's 3rd year Michigan OL as well, don't hate me.
2014 USC (That year Drevno had three freshman on the O-Line)
HC: Steve Sarkasian OC: Clay Helton OL: Tim Drevno QB: Cody Kessler

+1 Underrated
It's beating a dead horse, but that 2013 Michigan OL looks pretty solid in hindsight (talent-wise, not results)
I'll never understand Hoke's loyalty to Funk. Between Funk and Borges... Ugh. I just can't rehash that crap again.
Good collection of data. That 2009 Stanford line is more experienced than ours, but, uh, those results look good (and were even better in real life the year that Harbaugh rode Toby Gearhart to an annihilation of USC in LA).
Drevno is less involved with the OL this year, of course.
Agree and think Runyan is going to do a good job this year. I actually think our o-line will be dominate in a lot of games this year. I also think Evans is going to have a monster year behind this line. Once the starters are chosen and named I think you will start to hear from Frey and Drevno on what they have going forward. I am pretty sure they will be excited and confident but will see.
I started creating a post comparing USC's group to our current UM group using recruiting rankings (247) and was pleasantely surprised by how similar we are minus the RT position. Granted, if we decide to throw out a true freshman tackle like Ruiz (whose not a tackle) or Fillaga (whose generally regarded as talented, but not ready to play) we could be even more similar, but it seems like Runyan, JBB, or Ulizio are the most likely guys to play RT and are not in the same recruiting ranking as the rest of the guys on both rosters.
Just as a point of reference here are the recruiting rankings (247) of USC’s guys versus UM’s

I think if you incorporate Ruiz into the lineup it will mean kicking Bredeson out to OT.
...the whole must be greater than the sum of it's parts.
Just a question for any of you knowledgable dudes. Any chance Bredeson kicks out to right tackle?.
Not sure they are a great example of why people shouldn't freak out about a freshmen or two starting on the oline. The rushing stats provided in the OP for the 2014 USC team aren't very good.
To say that two players who haven't seen the field in college are potential 1st or 2nd round draft picks is an enormous assumption.
I wasn't a Funk hater at the time, but that's an outrageous collection of talent for such poor performance. I would imagine very few college OLs in history have three top-100 NFL draft picks. Four out of five were top-200 recruits as well.
Wanted to see if the optimism surrounding the OL after the spring game is warranted, and the numbers seem to back up that we at least have a chance.
Wish we had Kyle Bosch still, he would really help our O-line!
If there's one unit of the team I would for once and all like to see return to dominant, it'd be the O-Line. Maybe it's just me, but it feels like Michigan is still 1-2 years away from having that.
You're probably right. And it's amazing that it has been this bad for this long. It is the backbone of your offense, and if your O-Line sucks your offense can never be elite.
Definately shows the limitations of recruiting rankings, especially where the Oline is concerned since it is the one group where chemistry is vital.
I think for all the players, now that it's year 3 of Harbaugh, there is a much higher level of comfort with the expectations and direction of the program; I expect see that manifest itself in the Olines performance.
While they may not be dominate, especially in the running game, I think having a stronger cohesiveness will especially help them close games out.
