Post Michigan - New BYU injuries. Play Michigan and "You feel it for a week afterward".

Submitted by markusr2007 on

I don't know if it was USC coach John Robinson or someone else who once said something along the lines of "you know whenever you play Michigan, you'd feel it for a week (afterward)". The good ole days.

So I was just checking out the NCAA football injuries list

We all know that BYU has been struck by a lot of unlucky, big name injuries this year (Taysom Hill, etc.).

But what I didn't know was that after playing Michigan last Saturday, BYU had 5 new injuries to starters who are all listed as questionable for UConn on Friday.

Notice the "injured last game" status remark.

Also, two starting defensive backs, starting LB, starting LG and starting TB.

Es lebe Manball!

This makes me feel all warm and tingly inside.

Yes indeed, they used to say that about Bo's teams . . . win or lose you know you were in a game because you felt it for a week.

I have not heard this kind of thing about a Michigan team for years.  If the new coaching staff can combine the toughness of Bo's teams with just a little bit more innovation (and it looks like thay can so far) we will be some happy fans.

I recall watching the 1994 or 95 (?) Alamo Bowl vs. TX A&M, and it has always stood out to me as one of the hardest hitting games I've ever seen. Of course we lost in some crushing fashion that I don't totally recollect (I was in a bar all night), but the hitting just seemed so intense all game. Anyone else remember that, or was I just really drunk?

"Player of the game" was the offensive line.  391 yards rushing. TWO 100 yard rushers.  Miss players said after the game that they had never faced a more physical team (Gary Moeller knew how to coach).  BYU was the first time in a long time that I felt our boys simply imposed their will against a quality opponent.  I'm sorry BYU guys got hurt but...HARBAUGH.

I was merely struck by 5 injuries occuring in one game, all of them to important starters.

Michigan has had its fair share of key injuries over the last 10 to 15 years too, but I can't recall a game where 5 starters got knocked out, including 3 key defensive starters.

That's was my point in sharing it. Not grave dancing.

What grave dancing?

We're playing goddamn manball.  Any physical football teams inflict and receive injuries.  Hell our own guys hurt each other in practice.

Nobody is taking glee that any particular kid is hurt.

The point of this post is our guys are getting chins of fuckin iron vs curling up into a fetal position in the 3rd quarter last year.

As is a bunch of hypocrites dropping F Bombs and other insults on Peppers.

Fk em.  The self-proclaimed "God's team" (see last week's M Live article for that) could not hang with the big boys.

“They're a big, physical, tough football team and our injuries reflected that,” Mendenhall

Mendenhall at the post game presser after rattling off the names of several players that left the game hurt:

"They are a big, physical, tough football team and our injuries reflected that."

On to Maryland.

Bronco Mendenhall and the players stated that Michigan by far was the most physical team they played so far.  Micah Hannemann DB said he feels like he was run over by a train. Funny coming from a DB.

It's about time we are garnering such respect. These coaches and the strength and conditioning coaches along with the leaders of this team are making this team ferocious like its namesake wolverine.

Why are people offended? Football is a game of naked violence. It is coached that way, and we watch it precisely because of that violence. People get hurt. Injury reports are released because they matter (to fans, gamblers, etc.). Pretending like it's not a good sign that people are getting hurt playing Michigan is to ignore the essence of the sport. Those injuries are proof positive that the team is headed where we want it to, like it or not.

Because the objective is to win the game, not hurt other players. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad that we play very physically and as long as we're playing clean, it doesn't bother me too much if other players get hurt. It is football after all, and players will get hurt. But do we have to make a thread counting the number of opposing players we hurt, and treat it like it's an accomplishment?

the outcome of phsyicality is not always injury. I like driving my car, I don't like getting into car accidents.  Shit happens, I would love to hear about how sore they are or about little bumps and bruises. I sure as hell don't see how counting how many of those kids were physically injured as something we accomplished. I will never feel proud an opponent got a concussion or a sprained knee or broken bone. Oh their TE has a broken rib, we're so physical.. fuking gross.

I agree with this, I never like players getting injured on any team.

Also - We want BYU to win a lot of games to make our win look better. So we'd rather they recover quickly and be un-injured so they can win some games and make us look great!

If players were getting hurt because Michigan was playing dirty or taking cheap shots, I would agree with you.  But if players are getting hurt because Michigan is just beating them senseless, completely legally through physical play, well dammit, this is football.

So a 25+ year old quote from a USC coach is presented as something presumably new and from the BYU side to the naked eye viewing the title. Open it up and it's just a celebration of another team's injuries. And people think this thread is good? Yikes.

The odd thing is that even with all this physicality we never scored in the second half. I know we went conservative and were basically playing keep away by thst point, but still, you'd think after wearing them down we'd have at least gotten into FG range.

My best-friend from high school ran track at Eastern in the late 1980s. I remember him telling me that there was an entire week he couldn't get in the training room. The track trainers had been reallocated to football because Arizona had put a beat down on the football team. It makes me feel good that Michigan is doing this to their opponents.
